He's just being honest, you guys
While looking up info on the UW student that was randomly attacked near campus Tuesday morning, I stumbled across this article on The Stranger's website: "UW Campus Stalked By El Creepo."

University of Washington police are looking for a man who solicited three students for sex on campus yesterday.

Apparently the guy hung around the parking lot for hours, following people, and was creepy enough that three separate women filed complaints with campus police. The comments are what got my blood boiling, though. There are some real gems, like this:

"Wow, after reading some of these comments I didn't realize how messed up and uptight things are around Seattle. I am sure a lot of us wish we had the courage to just go up and say our feelings to someone we are interested in. I am thinking the ugly description has a big influence on what this women think. It's really common courtesy to be up front about expectations and as long as he does not pursue them after they decline."

"#12 your on crack if you followed men around and asked them for sex you'd get more than 50 percent yes no matter what, and no one would call the cops on you ever. thats the gender gap in our society, if your a guy then your arrested for wanting sex or asking for it unless you do it THE RIGHT WAY and with THE RIGHT CLOTHES and THE RIGHT BODY AND FACE."

"We both know if it were Johnny Depp propositioning women on campus there'd be no complaints, and there would be women climbing over each other to be next."

"What's troubling is that a guy is finally just being honest and up front and they are treating him like a criminal."

I... what? They think there's nothing wrong with a total stranger following women around asking if they wanna fuck? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!

You mean you don't find his candor refreshing???

Yeah, me neither. I don't understand the mentality of those commenters at all.

I love it when some guys don't understand that, as a female, you are pretty much trained to instinctively be wary of (if not actually scared by) strange men of any kind - especially if they start asking personal questions or if they mention sex. Through years of hearing about friends and strangers who've been assaulted and harassed, I'll mostly react with at least a little anxiety if some strange guy approaches me out of the blue, no matter what he looks like.

I've also learnt through personal experience that even seemingly nice, sweet old men who I could knock over without trying might suddenly start asking if they could 'pop my cherry' (this actually happened when I was in high school, and yes, I was somewhat traumatised).

Yeah, and just look at what happened with that poor girl in Georgia: she lets her dog run around with an old man's dog while she's hiking and the guy decapitates her. Looks can be deceiving. I've definitely been creeped out by harmless-seeming or attractive men.

Reminds me of my social psychology class where we learned about the asshats who argued that because men almost always accept unsolicited invitations for sex, and women never do, the differences in gender as it pertains to sex must be genetic. Ah, we women had such fun tearing their professional opinions apart.

I've been approached by random men before and merely hit on and sweet jesus it's terrifying. It's arguably messed up that it has to be that way, but...

Yyyyyyyyyeah. I wonder how these useless fuckbags would react if a creepy dude hit on them. Hey, he's just being honest about what he wants! What, you don't like him? Is is because he hasn't got THE RIGHT CLOTHES or THE RIGHT FACE?

What do you suppose they'd be saying if it were a creepy guy going around hitting on men? Yeah, if it were a woman hitting on either men or women probably nobody'd care, but the point is generally nobody likes creepy men who might hit on them. It's not just a double standard held by women; if anything, the distinction is that women have more statistical evidence to justify their double standard.

Yes. And really, I would hope that if some woman was following men around in a parking lot asking for sex, they would report it. Just because "you'd get more than 50 percent yes no matter what, and no one would call the cops on you ever" doesn't make it appropriate behavior. It's a fallacious argument.

I am sure a lot of us wish we had the courage to just go up and say our feelings to someone we are interested in.

OH YES, BECAUSE STALKING COMPLETE STRANGERS AND PROPOSITIONING THEM FOR SEX IS COMPLETELY THE SAME THING AS ADMITTING ROMANTIC FEELINGS TO SOMEONE. COMPLETELY.

I bet these fucknuts would be the type who think that women "ask to be raped", too.

...what the fucketh?

I remember getting harassed in high school by a guy who was blocking my way by throwing his leg up on the desk. I reported him to my homeroom teacher, who just happened to know the guy's parents. Guy treated me like gold afterwards.

I don't think it should matter, if someone is making you feel uncomfortable, no matter who it is, you should most certainly SAY something. Some of those commenters are utterly fucktarded.

Damn straight. About a week ago I got a very creepy phone call from someone who knew my name and address and threatned to "break in and rape and mutilate you unless you do exactly what I say." I kept him on the phone long enough to check that the door was safely locked, then mentioned that my roommate knew kendo, hung up, and called 911 and got the police over in under three minutes. And then I called my local precinct three times the following day until I got the exact name of the detective working on my case. (Who acts totally like Elliot on L&O SVU.)

In short, damn STRAIGHT speak up if anyone pulls crap on you, because the least thing that happens is you scare the bewilly out of them and they don't do it again.

Me too. Why is it that those seem to be so universally dumb? (Well, except on JF.) Even really fantastic blogs have user comment sections that are sycophantic at best and creepy/hostile at worst. I think Youtube comments are the very worst.

Wow, so much fail at once!

The Johnny Depp analogy sorta fails given that Johnny Depp does not go around bludgeoning and raping women in parking lots, as creepy strangers have been reported to do.

Actually, if someone who looked like Johnny Depp (or inset actor I think is really hot here, whatever) approached me for as a random stranger for sex I'd have essentially the same reaction as if someone who I thought was really gross did it. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

(If they literally mean "Hi, I'm Johnny Depp, let's hit the sheets" I'd still back away slowly, but I'll admit that's me.)

Do these guys not watch Criminal Minds?

I mean, I was kind of raised on Dateline specials about roofies and pedophiles, so the fear of omg, he's talking to me he must want to hurt me runs deep, but yeah.

Guys that look like Dawson will fuck you up, too. And have dogs. And farms with lots of space.

Sometimes, I hate living in a state where farmland and open space and very tiny police presence is less than an hour's trunk ride away.

LOLdefensive. I can't help but think that somebody got told he'd have to do a little personal grooming before he got laid, because that sounds exactly like my childhood friend who's the stereotypical mouthbreather overweight Trekkie, and bitter about the fact that none of the models at the shows he's a lighting technician at will date him.

Yeah! All that stuff you've been hearing from the feminazis pales in comparison to the unjust discrimination men face: they can't get laid as easily as women! Verily, this is the real problem of sexism, which plagues our society at the expense of poor horny males!

This reminds me of a thread I was reading on a Martin Scorsese forum a few years ago. Some of the guys seemed to find nothing at all wrong with the way that De Niro's character in the movie Taxi Driver was pursuing (read: STALKING) his love interest in the film. 0.o I really do think that a lot of guys just don't "get it," and the percentage of those who don't is actually really frightening.
