Shoot at fun stuff we can't print here!

Grieving father says he gave his son, 8, permission to fire Uzi.

Dr. Charles Bizilj stood 10 feet behind his son this weekend at a "Machine Gun Shoot" in Westfield, where the third grader aimed an Uzi at a pumpkin in the distance.

As Bizilj reached for his camera, the boy clutched the gun in his arms and squeezed the trigger. The Uzi flipped backwards and 8-year-old Christopher Bizilj fatally shot himself in the head....

"I gave permission for him to fire the Uzi,” Bizilj said. “I watched several other children and adults use it. It’s a small weapon, and Christopher was comfortable with guns. There were larger machine guns with much more recoil, and we avoided those.”

To quote the Emperor Claudius, quoting Augustus, words fail me.

Unless the sound of someone retching counts as a word.

I'm with you there. Everytime I see in the news or in tv a story about a tragedy at a gunrange, I wonder why (some people) in the USA are so *obsessed* with guns and owning guns.

That's one of the reasons why we didn't stay in America. I know it's a cultural difference, but the idea that people can walk around armed with heavy weapons or display them in their homes where they have kids scared the shit out of us. And not just handguns, but shotguns and AK-47s and UZIs. For god's sake, WHY do you need guns like those?

Esecially because, in Australia, we had one major incident and the government promtly ripped the guts out of the gun industry and stomped all over them. Quite sensibly, I thought.

One of the few things I ever agreed with Howard on.

Well, from the outside it seems to be a mix of various complexes and paranoia... But an American once explained to me that this was a legacy of the old times where people had to rely on themselves for self-defense, and so it's a cultural heritage that people learn to use firearms at a young age, to be prepared, just in case.

I thought about telling him that back in the good old days firearms were a little bit different than nowadays, but the guy was a friend of my boss so in the end I just smiled and nodded.

(Edited because for a moment I remembered him being more stupid than he actually was)

From inside it's mostly a mix of various complexes and paranoias too. :\

I mean, yeah, there are some people that need to hunt for meat, but those people really aren't that common. And the only people I've known who've ever seen it as a heritage thing were pioneer reenactors and actually did use muskets and muzzleloaders, powder horn, ball shot and everything. Most of the people doing this kind of thing, though, are rather stupid suburbanites who want to feel like big, strong, manly men whose money would have been better spent on some gas to drive to the grocery store.

Theory 1: America came from a bunch of colonial terrorists, so of course we want to own guns.

Theory 2: American men have the smallest average penis size IN THE WORLD.

Take your pick.
