I want to move to New Zealand
Doctor denied permanent residency visa.... because his son has Down Syndrome. Yay, Australia, proving once again how our immigration department sucks. (At least this family hasn't been incarcerated? Yet, anyway.)

Yeah, the immigration dept is pretty much one of the biggest amounts of FAIL in Australia, isn't it?

Earlier this year in Canada a family who had already purchased a home here in Canada and been living here was refused entry because their daughter has a disability.

As far as I remember, it was a British family that did not secure all the permits before they moved, it wasn't actually about the kid's illness.

What they were told at the airport was:

“The atmosphere changed. She said: ‘why have you brought your daughter to this country?’” he said.

“I asked why I shouldn’t I bring her and was told by the border guard that because she was disabled she had a lifetime ban.

Frankly, having dealt with such things on a day to day basis, I'm not surprised that this was expressed. There's a lot of very poor training out there. Last week a girl who was deaf was told that because she was dead she couldn't give blood. CBS said "Oh, no, that's not our policy!" but if their volunteers had been trained to deal with Deaf people in the first place, that never would have happened.

Fair enough. My experience with Brits showed me that they too often assume they don't need a certain document abroad (especially in the Commonwealth) on the account of being British. I'm sure parents of a disabled child would go through all the paperwork fifteen times, but I'm always skeptical of stories presented in the Telegraph or Daily Mail that touch upon immigration, be it of Brits going abroad or people migrating to the UK.

I read the news reports in August.

It happened right here in my current city. Go Halifax. Get down with your supportive self.

I'm not going to read the article. Because I will become incoherent with rage. Instead, I'm going to hug my son -- who also has Downs -- a bit tighter when he gets home from school.

That's awful. And the father moved to Australia because they needed doctors.

Oh yeah, that kid may cost us taxpayer money, which would be WAAAY more than HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE NOT HAVING A DOCTOR. What the FUCK, people.

However, I am pretty glad that a bunch of ministers are going "Oh HELL no!" about it. Nice to know that not everyone in government is an asshat.

sigh, immigration. When I applied for my Aussie student visa everyone - parents, doctor, IDP - freaked out because I declared my anxiety/depression on my medical checkup. I got through fine, but I don't see why having a son with Downs Syndrome - who seems OK otherwise, not dire - would be such a bad thing.

I don't understand the need for immigration procedure, honestly. borders are fake and all they do is stop legit people from moving where they need to be.
