Avatar Live-Action movie casting!
This would technically be [info]fandom_wank material, but sadly Hollywood's stupidity lands it straight in Unfunny Business.

Shyamalan lines up his cast for 'The Last Airbender'

What's wrong with this picture?

The scans_daily post has already a decent amount of "so what's wrong with casting mostly white people?".

The only funny thing so far.

Edit: capslock_atla reacted with CAPSLOCK OF RAGE. Or possibly regular capslock_ capslock. I dunno, man, I'm more lowercase than e e cummings when it comes to capslock comms.

Other edit: There is art! And a letter-writing campain? How old-school!

Gripping edit: Bingo card and some interesting links.

Oh man, I was pissed off when this happened with the '21' movie.

I'm not that familiar with Avatar, so I can't say how much of this smacks of whitewashing. But at first glance it sounds like Hollywood's done it again!

I was amazed by that as well in 21, especially given that according to Bringing Down The House they refused to take white card-counters...

(Didn't see the movie, though.)

It's very similar, in that non-white-ness is clearly part of the point. There's not a recognizably European culture in the (deep) mix of cultures in Avatar.

I really like the one guy's argument about how it's totes ok to whitewash anime because it's not drawn 100% realistically.

We can't know it's whitewashing, guys, because you totally can't tell the race of anime characters.

While the comment is amazingly stupid, he does have a point about the drawing style making it (annoyingly) hard to tell the difference sometimes. My first exposure to Code Geass was a blurb about it being Japanese people rebelling against a western empire, and a cast picture with no character names on it, and my response was "...So...which ones are which?"

What annoyed me the most was that he said that, for example, Bleach musical actors don't look their part and... I watch doramas, yeah, it's weird at first but then you realize they were always meant to look and be Japanese, despite the sparkles and the big eyes. It's like saying The Simpsons don't look white, you know?

The "They don't look Asian!" argument I'm seen some people use annoys me in various ways, but one of them is that it still completely ignores the problem with casting white kids as Sokka and Katra. People can argue all they want that Aang and Zuko don't look Asian to them, but the Water Tribe people are all very clearly meant to be darker-skinned.

You know, I figured that making a couple characters white was inevitable. I didn't like it, but I guessed that the only Asian in the main cast would probably be Zuko.

But... Katara and Sokka? You can't use the "it's drawings so it's all the same" excuse there. No matter how you slice it, they have dark skin. Why the hell would you change that?! There's few enough non-white main characters on TV nowadays!

There was a girl on my flist who was upset because she has a Native American daughter, and she enjoyed that Avatar had prominant characters of an Inuit-like decent. So much for that, huh?

So Miley Cyrus would totally be okay as Kagome or Kikyo in an InuYasha movie?

All issues of race and skin color aside, I think Miley Cyrus would make an outstanding Kagome...

...mostly because I can't stand Kagome, but also because trainwrecks are entertaining. Now, which one of the Jonas Brothers should play Sesshomaru? Hmmnn...

Meh. You know it would have been nice to have asian actors to go with heavily classic Chinese feel of everything else. But honestly, I think that Shymalan's going to butcher the story so far past any recognition anyway, he might as well cast a bunch of white dudes.

Probably throw in some plot twists, too. Like in the last 5 minutes we'll find out Zuko's a girl or something.
