Court says private school can expel lesbians

A private religious high school can expel students it believes are lesbians because the school isn't covered by California civil rights laws, a state appeals court has ruled.

Relying on a 1998 state Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Boy Scouts to exclude gays and atheists, the Fourth District Court of Appeal in San Bernardino said California Lutheran High School is a social organization entitled to follow its own principles, not a business subject to state anti-discrimination laws.

There are three different main Lutheran churches: the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the Missouri Synod (LCMS), and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). The latter two are very conservative, and the ELCA is much less so. Your school might've been a LCMS-founded institution...

Yeah, it could have been. I'm not going to pretend I actually know anything about Lutheranism or the branches thereof; at the time, I was too busy being an emo teen to pay much attention to any of that. ... So I probably shouldn't have put my two cents in to begin with, but oh well.

If any or all of the teachers went to Concordia (one of the Concordias, there's a bunch of them) it was probably LCMS. LCMS is really active in starting schools and sending missions, and not really active in joining modern society. My kids went to an LCMS school from preschool to 8th and 6th grade respectively, for reasons which do not bear examination at this juncture. One of my strongest memores was a pastor getting his rant on about how things had gone downhill since they stopped making candidates for confirmation be examined in German.

I once fell in with a bunch of LCMS missionary offspring; they make just plain Preacher's Kids look sane, normal, and unrebellious.
