10-Year-Old Gets Divorce
Here's a story that's both sad and kinda awesome. A 10-year-old girl in Yemen was sold off by her family to be the wife of an older man. This went, well, about as well as these things usually go. After two months of marriage, he finally let her visit her parents. She begged them to get her out of the marriage, but they refused. So she took matters into her own hands.

Nujood finally found her moment to escape one day, when her mother gave her a few pennies and sent her out to buy bread. Instead she took a bus to the center of the capital, Sanaa — a city of 3 million people — where she hailed a taxi and asked to be taken to the courthouse. She had never been inside a courtroom but had once seen one on television, she says, and knew it was a place where people went for help. There she sat silently on a bench, uncertain as to what to do, while crowds of people scurried past, scarcely glancing at the quiet child. It was only once the courthouse emptied during the lunch recess that the judge noticed her and asked why she was there. "I came for a divorce," she told him. Horrified, he took her to his house to play with his 8-year-old daughter, and granted the divorce two days later.

Now she's not only free from her marriage, but she's inspired other child brides to get divorces and Yemen has raised the legal marriage age to 18. (Though her marriage was illegal under both the old laws and new.)

I've reread that article twice now, and its still making me tear up in joy. I'm seriously fangirling her now.

I'm so happy both the lawmakers saw how terrible this was, and that the girl was brave enough to run away. Good job all around, except to her parents and 'husband', who should both be punted into the Molten Core.

Asked by a reporter in Paris if she hopes to meet her Prince Charming one day, Nujood sat back in her chair, crossed her arms and said bluntly, "I no longer think about marriage."

As well she shouldn't. My goodness, part of me wants to hug her and keep her from ever being hurt again, and the other part just wants to say, "You go, girl!" Hooray for her. In a culture with far fewer options for abused women and girls, she made a way for herself. I hope she inspires more Western women to leave abusive mates.

Good on that judge, too, for seeing a playmate for his daughter rather than someone who should have to sue for divorce. There are probably all kinds of pressures to keep these things hidden under the rug. I have no doubt some men would have simply sent her back to her "husband" to endure more abuse.

I'm cynical enough to be very worried for her. Once the media attention really cools down, she is still going to only be a little kid in custody of the parents who did this to her in the first place. Considering that she "sullied the family's reputation," I wouldn't be surprised if she suffers an early death at the hands of a family member.

Most of my students are Yemeni, and a few (boys and girls) have been close to or even gotten engaged (generally to people still in Yemen). This makes me feel like they are that much safer now.

She got married at ten. TEN. The article says that this girl was raped and beaten daily. You don't do that to women, and you sure as hell don't do that to little girls. What the fuck is wrong with that man?

And furthermore, what the fuck is wrong with those parents? When your daughter tells you that she is being beaten and raped, you do NOT tell her to just deal with it! Do these parents have no parental instincts at all or something? I've never had children, but I am very attached to my little sister (who is 9, which makes this story hit even closer to home), and if I heard someone was abusing her like that I would go out and kill the bastard. I can only imagine that parental instincts are even stronger than sibling instincts.

That's great.

I had no idea they actually married such young people to considerably older people.. That's pretty twisted. I thought child marriages were basically "marrying" two kids and then officially marrying them as they both became of age, like a promise of eventual marriage.

"After two nightmarish months he allowed her to visit her parents, who rebuffed her pleas to end the marriage. (See pictures of the most famous couples.)"

"But her fame appears to have protected her from that possibility for now. (See pictures of the busiest wedding day in history.)"

Nujood wasn't the only very young girl who sought a divorce in Yemen, and one's a year younger. *feels ill* Reem, another girl, wasn't so lucky with the judge who presided over her case.

Reposted for clarity, sorry. I'm a little upset.

What makes this post the saddest to me is the complete lack of surprise. There is an are in Ethiopia where 90% of girls are married before 15 (got this from a story abouta 7-y/o bride (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0412120360dec12,0,6964856.story?page=2)). Also, Stephanie Sinclair has taken some pretty, um, impressive photographs, of Afghani men and their "wives" who are 11-13 or so (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5541006)
