To those having to eat their words, I hope they're lead-free!
Children's books quarantined in Nebraska library to comply with CPSIA law: http://www.ncnewspress.com/articles/2009/02/20/news/doc499ed094480fd323904423.txt

'Books removed include “Saint George and The Dragon,” a 1985 winner of the Caldecott Medal Award for its artwork and illustrations. The book has been checked out 50 times.

A 1974 copy of Shel Silverstein’s “Where The Sidewalk Ends” has also been removed, along with Walt Disney Biographies, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys collections.'

ETA: Here's an article on the issue which not only points out how ridiculous the whole thing is but which contains amusing comment drama: http://www.parentdish.com/2009/02/20/old-books-a-new-source-of-lead-poisoning/

And here is an example from a JF member of how this new law is affecting the ability of companies and people to do business. Now take that affected business and multiply it by several thousand.

Pretty much, yeah. I knew so many people who said 'Oh, nothing will EVER happen!' who are now in a panic because all the thrift stores have done away with all their kids things and a lot of them have signs warning that all items for sale are only for kids age 13 and up. None of our local libraries have given in yet, but I worry it's only a matter of time before something bad happens.

*HEAD + DESK = OTP*

The minimal, if any, traces of lead in books is not worth all of this. :/ Some of those books are well-loved and may be nigh-irreplaceable.

Nancy Drew novels were the first 'adult' books I read, and I loved them for a long, long time. It makes me sad, it really does.

Can we just tax them to pay to replace the books?

So precious first editions and out of print books are being pulled out of fear that kids are going to eat them.

God damn it. It's legislation like this that makes it so damn difficult to put in common sense safety laws. How can anyone take lead laws seriously when anti-regulation people can just point to this retardedness and say, "see these people are just ninnes."

The lead law does not impact books in adult and young adult sections.

Problem solved. Move everything to Young Adult. Shit can be done, because "young adult." They can't test every child's reading level, so for some kids, it would be YA if they have trouble reading.

Wait, does this mean that children under age 12 will only be allowed in the children's section, and if they want a non-children's book they'll have to have an adult (who isn't working for the library) get it for them?

I have a copy of that Saint George and the Dragon book. It's is a breath taking beautifully drawn book. My kids love it and despite that book and the many many others I have in my house have not given them any kind of dangerous lead levels.

God, this is so stupid.

This has been the most frustrating god damn thing I've experienced in a long time. Half the staff at my store had to spend an entire weekend going through and pulling stuff off the shelves because of this. Do you know how much Dr. Seuss was published BEFORE 1985? Argh!

I got nothin'.

Except that I'm going to cackle with evil glee as I give my own old books (including a beloved nursery rhyme book that I think might've belonged to a great-aunt) to my future children. "Eat lead, kiddies!! See how I've turned out? It might happen to you!!!"

Hey, don't worry, small children! You can still go to the library, the government is just protecting you from all those evil (and apparently quite tasty) books. Here, why not check out a nice DVD instead? Reading is for lead-tainted wimps.

http://www.series-books.blogspot.com/

Jennifer of series-books.com did a few posts about this, since she is a huge collector of children's series books - Nancy Drew, Betty Gordon, Cherry Ames, Dana Girls, Trixie Belden, Ruth Fielding, the Outdoor Girls, &c &c. The last she heard (albeit two weeks ago or so) is that collectables might not be covered by the law, since kids don't generally collect old books.

But it's all very up-in-the-air, which is why everyone's being told to write (keep writing) their congresspeople about how stupid the whole thing is.

Christ, if that poisoning risk claim was true, I ought to be a simpering idiot full-time instead of only when under the influence of hawtness. The number of books I read as a small child would stagger some adults.
