Alternative medicine unfunny business
Over a decade ago Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) helped to create the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). He's recently expressed his displeasure that NCCAM has failed to find proof for the effectives of too many alternative medicine modalities, and said (emphasis added) "One of the purposes of this center was to investigate and validate alternative approaches".

Not impartially investigate, but investigate and validate alternative medicine.

More here.

You only validate things if they're valid, mister. That's why the word valid is in there.

For some reason, this actually makes me laugh a bit. He sounds so put out that by forming this group, he didn't magically make everything work the way that he wanted to.

Clearly someone wanted his investment in herbal Viagra spammers to pay off...

Oh, God, it'd be hilarious if that was his actual reason for doing it.

My mom is totally into natural "medicine". Now that I'm going into a health field and am taking A&P from people who actually went to MED SCHOOL to get that Dr. after their names makes dinner conversation...interesting.

She's receiving diluted medical knowledge and, as any homeopath will tell you, dilution only makes it stronger. Q.E.D, she knows more about medicine than those who have their medical knowledge at undiluted levels.

My ex and his family are completely into alternative medicine. I was made to feel like a failure for taking evil western meds to control my almost uncontrollable asthma... oh and that pesky giant aorta tumor.

Fssh, that could easily have been treated with a homeopathic remedy made from diluted accupuncture needles which had been exposed to crystal energy after having been used by a yeti.

And some leeches. Can't forget the importance of balancing your four humours.

Actually, these days leeches are being used for select medical applications. As are maggots. Modern medicine is going old school, yo.

Yeah, there's definitely uses for some stuff - for example, I have an herbal supplement I take that along with my asthma meds gives me fantastic pulmonary function, better than when I was just taking the meds alone.

But if the apocalypse comes and there's no more Advair? I am so screwed, y'all.

Yeah, first sign of apocalypse I'm off to the chemist to raid them all for Symbicourt. And some antibiotics, just in case.

Please don't make that stuff sound harmless. People fuck themselves up constantly with the damned herbal "purges" and "purefying tea", and nobody realizes it because no-one takes the damned things seriously enough. Cuz they're herbal, and lol at flower healing. Why bother testing that stuff, right? It's harmless.

There's enough truth to some of that alternative medicine that the general attitude of scorn results in some really nasty stuff, man. Foxglove and beladona are "herbal", and they do have medical applications . . . but they are also really, really dangerous.

Thanks. Sorry, it's one of my hot-button issues, especially since I've started Kung Fu. I'm in favour of herbal remedies in certain situations - good old ginger's been my "pill" of choice for nausea for years - but I also know enough to realize how dangerous they are, and seeing a friend (who's not in Kung Fu and didn't get her silly ideas there, it should be noted) down a "purgative" herbal tea every damned day makes me really unhappy in general over the things. :(

Oh, definitely. I've gotten on people's cases on medical calls because they didn't write down the supplements and herbs people were taking in their history, because "Those aren't medications."

"Oh, so they were taking St. John's Wort and then went to a wine and cheese party? GEE, I WONDER WHY THEY GOT SICK."

Hey, St. John's Wort is natural, so it can't cause any problems, right? Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to finish preparing my hemlock salad.

I am reminded of one of my favorite lines from Dirty Jobs, when Mike is working at a charcoal manufacturing company. There's soot and stuff EVERYWHERE:

Mike: So... shouldn't we have masks on or something? I mean, this soot hangs in the air for awhile and it can't be good going into our lungs.

Proprietor: Aw, heck, it won't hurt you. It's natural!

Mike (VO): Natural?! Natural?, SHARKS are natural! LIGHTNING is natural!

I feel like I should have added a </sarcasm> tag for those too stupid to realize that hemlock is poisonous.
