ETA: Thought we could also post non-tragic stories here? Like the one honoring the George Mason drag homecoming queen or the sportsmanship story a couple weeks ago?

"Boy wins rights to tropical island in lottery
Thu Mar 5, 10:57 am ET

TAIPEI (Reuters) – A 4-year-old boy has won the use of an uninhabited tropical island, with white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters, in a Taiwan lottery aimed at boosting spending during an economic downturn.

Officials said Yeh Chien-wei, who won the prize at Thursday's draw, will get exclusive rights to the tiny plot in the Taiwan Strait from May through September.

Penghu County, an offshore archipelago, will provide food, drinks, water and electricity to the boy. He has been quoted in local media saying he wants to play in the sea.

"Penghu has a lot of islands, and that one has water and electricity, so someone can really enjoy it," said county economic promotion official Lu Yan-chang, explaining why use of the island, which also has a cabin, was offered as a prize."

...hm.

Well.

More power to him and his family, I guess? Kinda strikes me as more of a lounge post than unfunny.

This is actually kinda funny. I mean, I don't feel bad about giggling at all. Unless the unfunny part is the economic downturn or Taiwan's undetermined status vis-a-vis China.

It would be better if he got to keep the island, instead of just having a limited number of visits. Not enough people win islands.

Yup, it doesn't have to be tragic/enraging/etc. to post here.

We can post non-tragic stories here, but the rule tends to be that the topic is, as the saying goes, Serious Business. It's normally be something that touches on particularly sensitive or controversial areas, such as racism or homophobia. Something where saying "it's wank" fails because there really is a matter worth arguing about; it's not just the self-importance that characterizes wank.

Dude, screw electricity; I hope that kid lives out my favorite childhood fantasy by turning the island into his own personal Swiss Family Robinson wonderland.

I hope that he (and his family or the government employees) will clean up after himself. Beaches in China and Taiwan are full of tourist refuse. Taiwan's a little better, thankfully. :/
