Cute Overload homophobia "commentroversy"
I am in the middle of this, but unfunny > personal involvement to an incredible degree, I think. It's also small, but not at all incomplete.

Basically, Meg on Cute Overload, known to troll for "commentroversies" when she's bored but possibly simply ignorant in this case, posted about Katy Perry's fondness for the site as described in Vanity Fair. This divided the commenters into three camps:

Camp A: resents implication that they are old/out of touch for not knowing who the heck Katy Perry is. Example quote is first comment:

Why, yes indeed, I have been living under a rock. Who the heck is Katy Perry?"
Camp B: Perry fans. Example:
I knew there was a reason I had the hots for Katie, it's because instintively I just knew she was a CO girl. Katie, marry me? (2nd evar proposal on CO boards)
And then there's Camp C: People who think Katy Perry is nasty for exploiting faux-lesbianism to get attention. The first notable one is Boots:
For those who don't know: She's a Lily Allen knock-off who made it big by singing about women kissing each other in front of their boyfriends, because lesbians are apparently ~EDGY~. She's kind of a loser.
And the battle begins. Thrill! as people defend Perry on musical quality. Gasp! as you find out that the song in question is not offensive because this one commenter says so, and those of us who are bothered are just looking for things to be offended by. Be amazed! as you learn that objecting to Katy Perry = objecting to Cats 'n' Racks photos.

I'm in the thick of it under the name of Phoenix, and not the least bit sorry.

It's people like Katy Perry that make me not want to say I'm bisexual. Because now that's the sort of thing that first pops into people's minds (especially straight guys).

I'd say the only way to avoid some straight guys thinking that is to be 100% hetero, but then that's what the song's actually about....

Hey, when you say 'I'm a lesbian' you get people thinking the same as long as you are feminine(because the only real lesbians are those who can't find a guy because they are too ugly, truefact, the rest just want male attention), so one just can't win...

People should learn that women don't exist just to arouse guys.

I find Katy Perry deeply, deeply, tasteless, and That Song got worse every time I had to hear it.

Have something to get the taste out of your mouth:

Cobra Starship's rebuttal I Kissed A Boy (just to start shit). Which I can't stop listening to, even though the whole bandom crowd's music usually does less than nothing for me.

And Jill Sobule's I Kissed A Girl which predates Katy by fifteen years and is excellent singer-songwriter pro-bi folk-rock (featuring harmonica!)

Jill Sobule! While we're posting things that'll get the taste of Perry out of your mouth (laaaawl), have Jill doing Warren.

Unrelated, perhaps, but a damn sight more enjoyable than people giving Katy Perry any kind of attention. I am once again reminded why I never read CO's comments, on the rare occasions I visit it.

Your first link is surprisingly awesome (I'm not big on the bandom crowd either) and I must share it with friends.

And your second link reminded me that I love that song!

I'd add Idoli's 'Retko te viđam s devojkama' to the list (it's from 1980), except it has this line about things ending as soon as they're made public. Pity, since the song would be cool without it.

The first time I heard the Katy Perry song was when she performed it on So You Think You Can Dance and when they announced the title I hoped for a moment that it was a cover of the Jill Sobule song. Was very sad to be wrong.

Huh. I'm 22 and had no idea who Katy Perry was until this was posted. Or is that still too old for her audience? *lives under rock*

Also, am I the only who finds the picture on the front of her website incredibly creepy? I'm getting evil-doll-that-wants-to-kill-me vibes from it.

The only time That Katy Perry Song was at all enjoyable was when it was used to high parody effect on Dancing With the Stars as a dance by Lance Bass, complete with cherry chapstick prop and a very very put-on smooch for his dancing partner.

The only time Katy Perry was at all enjoyable was when she got a stomach virus and was said to be backstage at some major event barfing up her toenails.

The only time Cute Overload comments are enjoyable is if the reader is very, very, very intoxicated.

Taking the wank from another angle — why do people get offended when someone references something they don't know? Or act baffled, even? I tend to waver between too positions: Wikipedia That Shit and Too Lazy to Wikipedia That Shit. I mean, come on folks, we're on the internet. You can find an idiot's guide to changing a lightbulb in three seconds here. Enter en.wikipedia.org/wiki/{insert subject here} and you've got at least some knowledge about the subject, unless it's recently been hacked... in which case, Google.

I mean, hey, before reading this post I knew nothing about Jill Sobule, and now, thanks to the wonders of the internet, I know she's a forty-four year old singer-songwriter from Denver who has been compared to Randy Newman and other people whose music I don't listen to much. Of more interest to me is the fact that one of her songs is apparently on the Mystery Men soundtrack, which ups her cool level.

I've yet to hear any of her songs to my knowledge, but she often appears in public looking like she got dressed in the dark. While drunk. With a wardrobe full of props from a children's theater. In other words, all I know about her I learned from Go Fug Yourself.

It's based on a true story
[info]caito
2009-03-10 07:14 am UTC (link)
Every time I hear That Song, I replace the lyrics with my own version:

This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
Assumed I had the upper hand
Did not pay attention
It wasn't wise to do
Just wanted to make friends
Wanted to pet some wool
Needed intervention

I fought a sheep, and I lost it
I never should have crossed it
I fought a sheep, got accosted
Good lord was I exhausted
I felt so dumb
So crestfallen
Don't mean I learned my lesson
I fought a sheep, and I lost it
I lost it

It tried so hard to flatten me
Like pancake batter
It would not simply let me be
Just sheepish nature
It's not what good ewes do
Not how they should behave
My butt turned black and blue
Hard to escape

I fought a sheep, and I lost it
I never should have crossed it
I fought a sheep, got accosted
Good lord was I exhausted
I felt so dumb
So crestfallen
Don't mean I learned my lesson
I fought a sheep, and I lost it
I lost it

Those sheep they are so obtrusive
Soft wool, big horns, so abusive
Causing me pain so intrusive
Their cuteness belies it
It's a big deal, it's frightening

I fought a sheep, and I lost it
I never should have crossed it
I fought a sheep, got accosted
Good lord was I exhausted
I felt so dumb
So crestfallen
Don't mean I learned my lesson
I fought a sheep, and I lost it
I lost it

D'you think Meg would like it?
