Cute Overload homophobia "commentroversy"
I am in the middle of this, but unfunny > personal involvement to an incredible degree, I think. It's also small, but not at all incomplete.
Basically, Meg on Cute Overload, known to troll for "commentroversies" when she's bored but possibly simply ignorant in this case, posted about Katy Perry's fondness for the site as described in Vanity Fair. This divided the commenters into three camps:
Camp A: resents implication that they are old/out of touch for not knowing who the heck Katy Perry is. Example quote is first comment:
Why, yes indeed, I have been living under a rock. Who the heck is Katy Perry?"
Camp B: Perry fans. Example:
I knew there was a reason I had the hots for Katie, it's because instintively I just knew she was a CO girl. Katie, marry me? (2nd evar proposal on CO boards)
And then there's Camp C: People who think Katy Perry is nasty for exploiting faux-lesbianism to get attention. The first notable one is Boots:
For those who don't know: She's a Lily Allen knock-off who made it big by singing about women kissing each other in front of their boyfriends, because lesbians are apparently ~EDGY~. She's kind of a loser.
And the battle begins. Thrill! as people defend Perry on musical quality. Gasp! as you find out that the song in question is not offensive because this one commenter says so, and those of us who are bothered are just looking for things to be offended by. Be amazed! as you learn that objecting to Katy Perry = objecting to Cats 'n' Racks photos.
I'm in the thick of it under the name of Phoenix, and not the least bit sorry.
