According to the Vatican, the washing machine has done more to liberate women.
On International Women's Day, the Vatican's newspaper observed: "Some say the pill, some say abortion rights and some the right to work outside the home. Some, however, dare to go further: the washing machine."

"What in the 20th century did more to liberate Western women?," asks the article, which was written by a woman.

I understand why they don't consider birth control to be liberating for women, but seriously?? The goddamn washing machine?

Edit: The comments are full of good points as to why the washing machine was key in helping to liberate women. I stand corrected.

I'm more impressed with the dishwasher myself. Not having one for the past five months and a single sink...I'm more than willing to sell my first born for one. You waste a lot of time washing dishes.

THIS. When your dishwasher breaks down AGAIN, you try to minimize every item you use while cooking to the most insane degree because washing up SUCKS.

Yes. And trying to find good regular dishwashing liquid that freaking soaps up is impossible! I don't understand why it's so hard. And let's be real, the sink washes never fully wash. There's always smudges. I waste a good 45 minutes to an hour doing my dishes a couple times a week. Never again will I mock the electronic diswasher.

Hell, I'd even take one of those 1960s contraptions. Maybe I could wash my pots and pans easier, too. Dish racks take forever to do their job, too.

I've got a pretty damn good dishwashing liquid, but yeah, it's insane trying to get EVERY inch. Finally I gave up and thought that as long as I get off most of the food and germs it won't #$%^ing kill me.

Oh, I know right? But what about like the smears? You know, like fingerprint ones? I just want clean dishes! I hated it yesterday when I made crawfish bisque. That was a bitch and a half to clean up since it involved the blender and several pots and pans.
