The Open Source Boobs Project: Dear sir: I believe your patriarchy is showing.

The second post linked there had comments disabled, with a pointer to comment at the first post. The first post now has two heidipologies appended to the top, and he somehow managed to delete all 1300+ comments accidentally in the process of locking them. (Despite having been on LJ since forever and hosting many popular discussions.) I have a few of the upper-level pages in cache; anybody have more? ETA:Comments appear to be back for now; you can now follow comment links in peoples' posts.

For those of you who have been lucky enough not to see this yet, basically, some SF fans were trying to start a utopian project where anybody wearing a green "Yes, you may" button may be punched in the face for being gratuitously stupid. (And a slightly more hard-core swift kick to the balls version.)

LAST ETA: I have just disabled anon comments; porn spam has started arriving faster than legit discussion, sorry. If any anons want to keep talking, well, you can get a JF account!

Will be adding more links as I find them (feel free to drop them in comments); but as much of the great discussion was in the comments of the OP and is now gone, I wanted to get this up as soon as possible. ETA: Now adding more links. If you don't want your post linked, ask and it's gone.

At the risk of painting a big bulls-eye on my butt....

I actually have read a lot of other things written by this guy, and I must dissent with the notion that he is skeevy. More like possessing-of-an-aging-hippie's-utopian-sense-of-sexuality. But that, in and of itself, isn't skeevy. Unconventional, yeah, but...not skeevy.

I'm a bit sad that for many, this is the first they've heard of him; he's actually written some wonderful things. He's actually very good.

As for his views on things sexual? I hung out on an adult themed bbs for years, and it sounds more like he'd fit in with that kind of crowd; a relaxed attitude towards it all. Some people wanted to go further than others, but usually all it took was "sorry, I dont' want to do that" to set them straight. The people who pushed it got their asses handed to them.

Pretty much the only thing I can fault him for in this is in talking about it outside the context of those like-minded folks who want to engage. Yeah, my crowd went to a strip club every week, and maybe had some daisy-chaining hook-ups going on, but we...didn't talk about it too much with people outside the group, because that wasn't their bag, really. But if any of us had a blog, we may talk about it a little. Maybe under a filter, but we may talk about it.

All he did was just forget to restrict this to a closed audience, and I don't think this makes him skeevy, just...optimistic. And I can't fault him for that.

Not that I'm saying that those who don't go in for this kind of thing are prudes, either. It just ain't your thing; great. Slash ain't my thing, I can respect the "this isn't my thing" thing.

So -- my contribution to the discussion is that it looks like he just got caught up in something, forgot to restrict the audience, and it bit him in the ass. And no, I don't feel that makes him skeevy, misogynistic, creepy, horny, desperate, or anything like that. Just...someone who forgot how many people he was talking to when he got all excited about something. I can forgive that.

::notches an arrow:: I'm sorry, but in what possible context could "let's make boobs into non-sexual, non-fetish objects by getting women to let us grope them," be construed as anything but perverted? There is no non-objectification here, except his own mind trying to justify the fact that, for all his lofty ideals, he and like-minded people just want to touch women's boobs. Now, if it had been mutual, like the one person in Scalzi's blog who suggested that if women allowed their chests to be fondled, men had to allow the same for a sexualized part of their own body, then maybe I could understand the "non-objectification" claim. But the fact of the matter is, men wearing buttons that say you can touch their chests has nowhere near the same effect as women doing it, and people trying to claim that it's equal are just trying and failing to cover their asses. Aside from Florida, no one gives a shit about seeing or touching male nipples, for all romance novel covers would like you to believe otherwise.

If they really wanted to make it mutual, fondling men's crotches should have been allowed and encouraged.

But that won't happen, because OMG TEH GAYZ MIGHT TOUCH ME!

Actually, I read the post before it showed up here, and if memory serves, it was a woman who came up with the idea in the first place.

I don't necessarily buy the Sexuality 101 thing either, and agree with you that "he and like-minded people just want to touch women's boobs." I just...don't think that this is a problem, is all. BECAUSE -- at the same time, he also makes a sincere effort to confine things within a group of "people who want to touch boobs" and "women with boobs who like people touching them." If you didn't want in, you weren't dragged in. So what you've got is a group of like-minded people who are all doing something they...all want to do. He just talked about it outside the group because he thought it was cool.

And who hasn't done that?

Yeah, you hit it on the head. If boobs were non-sexual non-fetish objects, men wouldn't want to touch them. Seriously. How well do you think the idea of "can I grope your nose" come off. Hey, noses stick out. They are attractive. Why don't men want to grope them? Could it be because they aren't a common sexual fetish?

In this thread loligo suggests a different approach to turning the tables: Would-be touchers wearing buttons that advertise their willingness and waiting for touchees to take up the offer. And you can see how open he is to that suggestion, i.e., not especially. People might be judgmental about such buttons! Plus, he wouldn't get to touch boobies as much!

Well, I didn't know who this person was, and I'm willing to bet a lot of people who stumbled upon this didn't, either. If what you're saying is true, then yeah, it's sad.

But one thing still bugs me, though: why were there no offers for man-crotch grabbins? And if it was just about teh bewbs, why no man-boob grabbins? Why does it have to be just for women?

That, to me, is the light patina of skeeve that refuses to go away, even with repeated polishing.

But the very reason that people are "stumbling" over this now is because everyone is forwarding this one post around and going "OMG", which is a little unfortunate.

If memory serves, I vaguely remember something about someone trying to do man-boob grabbing too, but it just not catching on.

People kept mentioning the lack of equality to him, and he'd just reply along the lines of "They could have groped the men if they *wanted* to! ... but hardly anybody bothered, and that part wasn't interesting anyway."

Which, you know, if this was really about examining expressions of sexuality, he could have examined *why* that contrast.

...but no. Much more instructive to keep the focus on teh bewbies.

As [info]tablesaw told him in the comments of the original post, he may have intended to come across differently, but the issue is with what he actually said. And he was the one who chose to make that post public.

And if someone says something as misogynist as this inherently is in private, I don't think that makes it any less misogynist.

I actually don't as such consider this to be misogynist. But my efforts to explain why would be all sorts of human-psychology-101 babble I'd try to say in an effort to say something other than "it just doesn't bug me," and it still wouldn't sway you from your opinion. Which I didn't want to do anyway, so...yeah.

Yeah, he was the one who chose to make that post public, but...who hasn't inadvertently said something in public that they realized they shouldn't have?

Back in the day?

Those guys were skeevy .

Also, he's about twenty years too young, according to his user info, to be anything like a real, pre-AIDS, free-love hippy.

Make that forty years. I am so very much in denial about the 21st century.

"aging hippie" was a poor word choice on my part; I didn't know quite the right words to describe what I was getting at and fell back on something my Mom used to say. My apologies.

Yeah, I saw people in the original comment threads comparing them to the old hippie ethos.

I'm far too young to have been a hippy, but from what I have learned (in many places) about what the sexual liberation movement did to women's rights - I now understand why my mother spent that decade hiding in the college library.

"free love" ought to include the option of not having to constantly loudly say "no" if you don't want to be molested.

I'm a BiCon attendee, BDSM-er, slasher and all round general pervert. And I thought it was out of line. You want to get together at a private party or even a sex club and act that out amongst like-minded people that you know reasonably well (or even like-minded strangers for that matter), fine. To do it at a con, in public, to people you don't know at all? Skeevy, inappropriate, and he is old enough to know better!

"I'm a bit sad that for many, this is the first they've heard of him; he's actually written some wonderful things. He's actually very good"

Turns out this is not the first I've heard of him. The name rang a bell, and then I remembered an article by him which I'd read a few weeks back in which he contrived, in a wonderfully passive-aggressive manner, to tell the world how wonderful he thought his wife was when, after a great deal of psychological bullying on his part, she broke down and admitted that everything that was wrong with their marriage was her fault for not being emotionally supportive enough, and I thought at the time - "Misogynistic wanker*", and I think it a million times more so now.

Skeevy. Utterly skeevy.

*in the traditional, British sense.

Yeah, his writing sure is beautiful.

The best was the part where he said emotional bullying of significant others was a-ok.
Or his great insight on how it's okay to pester women who dress in a way he considers sexy for sex, even if they said no repeatedly before. Because they really want it.

He's not skeevy? Au contraire. He's a poster child of skeevyness.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

yes he IS skeevy! here is the proof!

Either you haven't been reading his writings that long or you are ignoring or in denial of the many disturbing sexist things he's written that people were easily able to dig up. For your own sake, I would rethink defending this person with such excuses as "Well the other things he writes are nice!" or "He's a hippy, it's all about freelove!" because even at a glance, I found his writing to be pretty indicative of a deep resentment against women. There are just too many examples of this for it to be chalked up to mere misinterpretation.
