I'm willing to bet that even members of the audience who were laughing were uncomfortable at the very least - laughter is a defense mechanism and all that.

But OMG OMG OMG EW. I want to be angry at the audience for not doing anything, but I'm pretty sure that, had I been there, I would have stared on in horror, maybe giggled a little awkwardly, and been utterly unable to bring myself to say something.
