Prom is NOT for Teh Ebil Ghey!

[info]staroverthebay
A Mississippi school was so outraged that a lesbian student wanted to bring her girlfriend (a fellow student) and wear a tuxedo that they canceled prom altogether.

You read that right.

Dear Virginia: I'm so sorry. I'm so very sorry.

[info]notjo
Virginia attorney general to colleges: End gay protections

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II has urged the state's public colleges and universities to rescind policies that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, arguing in a letter sent to each school that their boards of visitors had no legal authority to adopt such statements.

...

Former attorney general Jerry Kilgore (R) agreed it would be difficult for Cuccinelli to enforce his opinion without pursuing court action. But he said college visitors swear an oath to abide by state statute.

"Board members are required to follow the law," Kilgore said. "And he's telling them what the law is."

Catholic School kicks out a pre-schooler because the child's parents are lesbians.

[info]notjo
Catholic school boots student with gay parents

BOULDER, Colo. — A Catholic school in Colorado is kicking out a preschooler because the child's parents are lesbians.

The child will not be allowed to re-enroll next year at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School. The Denver Archdiocese posted a statement Friday that the parents are "living in open discord with Catholic teaching."

The statement says students in Catholic schools are expected to have parents who abide by policies of the school and church. The Archdiocese said students with gay parents in Catholic schools would become "confused."

The school's decision was first reported Friday by KUSA-TV in Denver.

No, it's not an Onion article, believe it or not.

You know what we should do? Make it okay to bully queer students

[info]notjo
C&P:

Matt Windschitl and Jason Schultz, two Iowa lawmakers, have proposed a bill to explicitly remove gay and lesbian students from anti-bullying policies in state schools.

Gay and lesbian teens are currently protected by the state’s Safe Schools Act, which aims to help students who are being bullied and harassed by ensuring a safe and non-judgmental environment to report incidents. Unacceptable, according to Schultz, who said that he has nothing against gay students, but added that he needs to remove their protections because it will lead to same-sex marriage.

Yes, you read that right. Windschitl and Schultz want to remove anti-bullying measures for gay students—one of the most vulnerable and harassed minorities—from public schools because he opposes an unrelated issue, same-sex marriage. It’s a destructive message for already bullied students, for whom these lawmakers not only have no empathy, but outright disdain.

Racist Unfunny from Televangelist Pat Robertson

[info]tehrin
Why Pat Robertson should not give political commentary on anything or open his mouth in general )

The Red Cross has run out of medical supplies. If you can, donate to relief efforts. There's a video in the link if you can stomach it.

ETA: Keith Olberman commented on Rush Limbaugh and Robertson.

"Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson, your lives are not worth those of the lowest, meanest, poorest victims of those still lying under the rubble of Haiti tonight. You serve no good. You serve no god. You inspire only stupidity and hatred and I would wish you to hell. but knowing how empty your souls must be for you to be able to say such things in a time of such need, I suspect the vacant purposes of the lives you both live now are hell enough already."

Reality! Vitality! Incentivizing!

[info]honorh
http://www.busygamer.com/blog1/?p=5569

So, in a near-unprecedented spewing of obfuscating verbiage, Microsoft has put in for a patent with an eye toward making your avatars more "realistic." To wit:

Last week, Microsoft’s patent application titled “Avatar Individualized by Physical Characteristic” popped up in the US Patent and Trademark Offices’ online database. The filing details a way in which Microsoft can introduce a heightened degree of reality into the appearance of gamers’ avatars by utilizing a third-party health-care data repository (Microsoft gives Health Vault as an example) or a Wii Vitality Sensor-like device.

. . .

Microsoft’s patent application might tie in with Project Natal, the Xbox 360’s forthcoming camera-based motion-sensing add-on. As part of its 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference, Microsoft showed off how the device will scan a person’s body and represent it onscreen via physically proportionate silhouette.

So, in other words, your XBox 360 avatar will now look more like you. Why? Because Microsoft wants to . . . oh, just read their explanation:

To incentivize people to improve their physical well-being, Microsoft’s filing notes that gamers will be locked out of certain components of a game or a chat room until the proper health parameters are met.

“Physical data that reflects a degree of health of the real person can be linked to rewards of capabilities of a gaming avatar, an amount of time budgeted to play, or a visible indication,” the filing reads. “Thereby, people are encouraged to exercise.”

I foresee this going badly.

I'm sorry, but I've found not one, but THREE examples of 'I HATE PEOPLE' in the past half hour, so instead of deluging UF_B I'm posting them all at once.

Guardian.co.uk: Uganda considers death sentence for gay sex in bill before parliament

When I say 'kill it with fire' I DON'T MEAN GAY PEOPLE, DAMNIT.

And then there's bonus fail on the subject, from the BBC of all people.
Guardian.co.uk: BBC news website asks users: 'Should homosexuals face execution?'

Jesus. Since I desperately want to work for Aunty Beeb after graduation, this is just giving me further impetus to get over there and demand to know WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING, NO SERIOUSLY. They have at least since apologised, but still. (Also, note the sexism fail at the end of the original article. Why, pray tell, does it matter that the original idiocy was committed by a woman?)

And, finally: Arbeit Macht Frei sign stolen from Auschwitz.

That's right, folks, THEY STOLE THE SIGN FROM AUSCHWITZ.

God, I hate humanity right now.

ETA: HTML fixed!

Sorry, folks, when I originally sent this post the Auschwitz thing hadn't been posted, but UFB's on moderated and the post only just got approved.

Whatever Verse, Same As The First: RaceFail 09 Isn't Going To End

[info]notjo
Dear Denizens of Unfunny Business,

I know you were thinking "Gosh, I'm so glad 2009 is almost over, because it's been a pretty long year of race!fail in fandom. I'm so happy that nothing else could possibly go terribly wrong."

Oh, my fellow naive fen. How wrong we were.

Final Fantasy 13 hasn't even been released in North America yet, but already, we've got race!fail. Sad, pathetic race!fail.

Time to discuss racism and humour! aka how about them mildly infamous icons?

To make clear whither and whence this post: I have recently seen some icons of Sazh (dark-skinned character from Final Fantasy XIII) that I found objectionable, as did [others]. The icons can be seen below this cut — I did say they are uncomfortably racist, right?

I made this face D: D: D:

Justira's post is a pretty good read and takes down the whole issue nicely.

The creator of the icons has since taken them down,ETA: No, this is some other bozo who took similar icons down, sorry! (correction via [info]justira) but also wrote a post that starts with "Dear fandom, shut up" and goes downhill from there. You can read some of it here, where he basically gets out the bingo card and starts on using it as a template for responses.

I know that 2010 will also bring on some form of Race!fail, but it just seems that this year seems like race!fail in fandom never ever ended.

ETA I apparently have been reading this FAIL backward. I think the first post is here:

PSA To Emerging FF XIII fans: Don't do racist shit, which includes at least one person using the icon in question in response. I guess that's ~edgy~.

Bingo in FF Fandom. "It's not new that fandom isn't a safe space*, but it's disheartening to see this happen in one of my favourite fandoms. However, it is heartening to see the creator of a widely-read FF newsletter speak out on this issue."

That headline is ridiculous. The article is not much better.

ETA: Forgot the link, had to hunt through my browser history for it.

Also, I'm still trying to figure out that line about "alleged abuse victims" -- what, the priests are convicted as pedophiles, but that doesn't mean the victims are telling the truth?

every the article uses the word 'Spanish', take a drink

[info]persona
Hotel owner tells Hispanic workers to change names.

TAOS, N.M. – Larry Whitten marched into this northern New Mexico town in late July on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel.

The tough-talking former Marine immediately laid down some new rules. Among them, he forbade the Hispanic workers at the run-down, Southwestern adobe-style hotel from speaking Spanish in his presence (he thought they'd be talking about him), and ordered some to Anglicize their names.

No more Martin (Mahr-TEEN). It was plain-old Martin. No more Marcos. Now it would be Mark.

Whitten's management style had worked for him as he's turned around other distressed hotels he bought in recent years across the country.

The 63-year-old Texan, however, wasn't prepared for what followed.

Sit on your hands while reading the article, least you bruise yourself facepalming: believe it or not, it gets even worse.

Bonus: The article is also badly written. It's just the cherry on the fail pile.

This is *very* unfunny.

[info]faultypremise
You are forewarned.

Murderer of Dr. George Tiller has supporters planning an online auction to raise money for his defense.

Supporters of Roeder, the man accused of murdering abortion provider George Tiller, say they're planning an online auction to raise money for his defense, Judy Thomas reports. (It's not clear if it'll actually happen -- eBay has a policy that should bar this sort of thing from happening.) Among the items to be auctioned: an Army of God manual for disrupting abortion clinics, drawings from Roeder himself and a prison cookbook compiled by the woman who shot and wounded Tiller back in 1993.

Leaving my opinion out of this, but hopefully no one here actually believes that killing doctors is somehow justifiable.

Also, Law & Order episode to be based on the death of Dr. Tiller.

Pope Palpatine using Those Horrible Gays to up his recruitment stats? How completely novel!

[info]duende
Apparently unsatisfied with everything ELSE the Catholic Church has to deal with, Pope Benedict XVI decides to stick his crucifix where it doesn't belong and meddle in the affairs of Anglicans -- by inviting those displeased with Episcopalian acceptance of homosexuals to COME OVER TO THE DARK SIDE join with Rome.

Text for the link-phobic )

A rather good article, I feel, though its appeal may be to a relatively fairly narrow audience (consisting entirely of people who A. know jack about either CoE or Catholicism, and B. actually care) followed by surprisingly insightful comments:

Is it just me, or does the picture suggest a vampire rising from its coffin? asks riggbeck.

speaking as an excatholic he is welcome to them! although they'll probably find that there are more gay priests in the catholic church rather than in the one they are leaving! observes jamijery.

This is all very interesting and informative, but I'm sorry to say that for 90% of the population, this will have no bearing on their lives. So sayeth NapoleonKaramazov in what I think is a fairly accurate estimation, begging the question "Why, then, is Duende bothering to post this?" Because I am extremely bad at math.

...Snarking aside, some of the comments actually ARE good ones:

This is very similar to Stephen Bates' article yesterday. Again, I fail to see the problem with the Vatican's proposal. A way has been found to allow a number of people who are currently Anglicans - call them Anglo-Catholics, High Church, or whatever - to move to the Catholic Church in a fashion which will make them happier than they currently are. In their absence, people in the Church of England who wish to make more changes in terms of women bishops, gay cleargy, etc, will find it easier to make those changes. Where is the problem in this? Only if you see RC / Anglican relations as some sort of zero-sum game, where the Anglo-Catholics have to be kept locked into the Anglican communion in order to keep the numbers up. --Suleyman

The Catholic Church is seen to be modern. In one breath the Pope has spoken superstision about homosexuality, and in the next, condemned Israel for bulldozing Palistenian homes. Tell them that no-one MAKES homosexuals do what they do. Do you? The idea of fearing anything let alone God seems dubious to most of the previous commenters. Fear isn't the issue regarding the accused. The only criticism about this compromise has come from rash hackers like Lucy Mangan who have distracted from whose own questionable practices, based on personal nuerosis and egocentricities, which bare no relavance to the INCREASINGLY neccessary role of a high profile, NON VIOLENT body in today's society. --GraemeFord

The usual parade of rage-inducing ignorance and thought-inducing conspiracy theories follow. ("There is no such thing as an Anglican church there are only a bunch of jumped up hypocrites who cow-towed to the divorce demands of a fat king. If you are a Christian you either follow true Protestantism or you admit you are a catholic and follow the pope, there can be no half-way house." ...What?)

As for myself, a former member of both churches, I think that is Rome wishes to corral all the bigoted homophobes into the same pen regardless of (basically irrelevant, in this case) differences in doctrine, they have my blessing -- it only makes them that much easier to avoid.
