Amanda Palmer Really Wants You To Look At Her Now

[info]notjo
I put it behind a cut so you can decide for yourself if you want to indulge her )

Or, instead, we could talk about My Little Ponies from the 80s. I had this one, which I forgot until I saw it on flickr:

the feminists always ruin everything

[info]dana
In Australia, the new Opposition Leader has been selected by his party, after some turbulant leadership issues (mostly over climate change policy). The man is Tony Abbott, he's a social conservative, strict catholic, he is against abortion and contraception, and he is a climate change sceptic.

To say I loathe him, is and understatement, and I never thought he'd make it to leader. But there he is. The only positive is that he's not going to be popular enough to Australians to be voted in as Prime Minister come the next election. (I hope, I pray).

Miranda Devine has a column in the Sydney Morning Herald. It appears she thinks Abbott is swell, and all those women who hate him are just uber-feminist bitches, well, you can read the column to see for yourself. Now I loathe this women as much as Abbott.

----
Apparently, Tony Abbott has woman trouble. Despite the fact he has three daughters, a wife, two sisters and a mother who adore him, the popular perception of the new Opposition Leader is that women can't stand his blokeish, confrontational style.

Abbott's so-called woman trouble is with a particular subset of female - the aggressively secular, paleo-feminist, emasculating Australian broad, for whom unabashed red-blooded blokeishness is an affront of biblical proportions )

calling out sexism. Just like they did in Salem, Mass.!

[info]galateus
Open source, why must you be so fail?

This has shown up all over the Planet Gnome RSS feed lately. It started when Richard M. Stallman gave a tongue-in-cheek speech at the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit about the text-editor-worshiping 'church of Emacs'. The epic command-line text editor wars between emacs and vi would normally be entertaining, but... not this time.
Where did religious parodies go so wrong? )
More blog links: A much better summary than mine, Monotonous is all for fighting sexism, rodrigo thinks it isn't there, and uraeus insists that sexism cannot be to blame for anything short of a trail of bloody footprints leading to sexism's front door.

Whenever I Hear About You Guys Talking About Gay Marriage, I'm Reminded Of Shit Like This.

[info]t_boy

I suppose this is a reminder of how far the LGBT community in the West has come.

Some background )

The actual unfunny part )

You think this is bad, though? At the very least she’s Singaporean. At least in Singapore there’s a rather thin veneer of intellectual respectability that gives Our Friendly Neighbors the ability to sneer at their brutish uncivilized cousins across the Tebrau Strait.

Jezebel has some...growing pains.

[info]clevermoniker
Shoot the Messenger is an NYC based live talk show, where guests are interviewed. One segment is "Thinking and Drinking," where guests have a cocktail and discuss current affairs. Editors of Jezebel, Moe and Tracie, were guests last week. The host, Lizz Winstead, is not pleased with their interview. She says they were sloshed the whole time and were poor role models for the many young women who idolize them. Selected video clips and quotes from Winstead at Huffington Post:
Show me that smile, oh show me that smile )
The comments at the previously mentioned Huff Post blog are nasty, and the comments at Shoot the Messenger are nasty. Meanwhile Tracie posts at her personal blog chalking it up to too much booze interacting with drugs that aid cessation of smoking, and that the whole conversation got out of hand. It is mentioned in her comments that there was allegedly someone at the event who didn't want to sit on a toilet seat Slut Machine (aka Tracie) sat on beforehand because she had gonorrhea a few years back.

Meanwhile, there is no official response at Jezebel. Don't waste another minute on your crying ) Watch commenters get on the backs of the editors! Watch commenters gang up on each other! Will the editors talk about what happened? Only time will tell, but if they do there will be a shitstorm.

You may remember The last big shitstorm at Jezebel, when Moe Jessica and Tracie discussed the new Roman Polanski doc on HBO and said it was probably consensual because the 13-year old had quaaludes and a relationship with an older man before, which resulted in 600+ comments on both that post and a follow-up.

Are the commenters entitled? Are the editors inconsiderate to their community? You decide!

ETA: There is a post up from managing editor Anna. Five hours in there are already over 750 comments.

Conservative groups call for domestic gag rule on contraceptives

Bush's choice to oversee national family planning policy, steps down

Looks like she's going back to those groups -- she belonged to them before.
