Sexism in Steam forums - unfunny
(Anonymous)
2012-05-11 04:47 am UTC (link)
Over in the Steam forums, a post ( http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2679979 ) is made about the game "Analogue: A Hate Story " by Xientie, which asked about the game. After a few replies about what the game was about, upon hearing that the game was created by - gasp - a woman, here's what he had to say (this part was deleted from the post, but in quotes from other responders it still stands ):

Her? As in it was written by a woman? I see... Hm, on second thoughts maybe I'll just skip this title. It looked good like a good game, but it's not really a game or at least not what I would define as a game. I'm glad I decided to ask here on the Forums instead of buying on impulse, saved myself a few pounds and a subsequent rage post expressing my dissatisfaction. Warlock - Master of the Arcane is coming out on the 8th, think I'll just get it when it comes out. Anyway, a big thanks to everyone for informing me about this game, especially those who dropped that the writer was a female.

This did not go over very well, with several people commenting on the stupidity behind his remarks, causing him to clarify with (also deleted, but still stands in quotes made by others):

My issue is with female writiers, nothing against them personally mind you, but in all cases where I've read something written by a female author their work never really spoke to me.

And tries yet again with:

You guys are taking this a little to far, right to the polar extreme. I just don't read anything written by women, because my own personal experiances have been pretty bad. There is no hatred or mistrust of women, infact I'm sure there are some Female writers out that probably could produce of works that I would enjoy. Though why would I go to such dire lengths to search out these female authors, when I know there are male authors who'll produce work that I like. It's not a question of misogyny and sexism, it's a question of practicallity. I have neither the time or money to gamble on something that might not work for me. I would rather take the safe bet, knowing that I'm getting my moneys worth and that I'll enjoy it. Because of that you accuse me of misogyny and sexism? Shame on you, it's people like you lot that give the Steam Forums a bad reputation. Someone comes on asks a question, and you attack them based on there own personal experiances which you know nothing about, that's the pits so it is.

It goes downhill from there, with others showing up to bemoan feminism and support his argument, while reasonable people point out how sexist he and the newcomers are. There's also this MRA-type crap, from ScorpionWasp:

My beef with Feminism? It is a doctrine based on a number of dogmatic concepts for which there isn't a shred of evidence (♥♥♥♥ culture, patriarchalism, etc), and for which there's actually quite a bit of evidence to the contrary. Now, before you call me a bunch of derogatory names, I'm ALL for gender equality, all for individuals being treated as individuals and being allowed to live their lives however the hell they please, free from imposed roles, gender or otherwise. That's sadly not what Feminism is about, even though their proponents will say it is. Their actual lobbying is all about getting women all the privileges that they possibly can, while us stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥ troglodytes foot the bill. "Oh yeah, men get murdered 4 times as often as women and we care deeply about that, we do, but let's go back to pressuring legislators for mandatory arrest policies, no requirement of evidence to accuse your husband of being an abuser and kicking him out of HIS home, me having the right to decide whether I want to be a mother, but the father just having to pay up or go to jail. We're all for equality here, some are just more equal than others."

Apartment Therapy tries to add Relationship Therapy with negative results

Apartment Therapy starts a relationship column with yesterday's post asking "Why Does My Partner Watch Porn?" Comment consensus is that this type of post doesn't belong on the website with the occasional addition comment such as:

Not for AT, this is weird. Porn can become a dirty addiction and it makes me gag and uncomfortable. The sex industry only adds fuel to the fire with things like human trafficking, etc. Some people obsess to the point where porn is not enough. I think it's sad/disgusting and not okay for an AT post.

"Poet" "Ven Findlay" has apparently been lurking around fandom appropriating fans' poetry from their journals and pretending to be the author. In her 2011 book Shaded By published by Lapwing Publications (a legit publisher of poetry).

Technophile and other fans discover the theft, report on it at http://technophile.livejournal.com/448530.html?thread=14659346#t14659346 and http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/887840.html?thread=545595936#t545595936, contact the publisher, book is pulled. "Poet"'s blog is deleted (who's got screencaps?) but plagiarized fans suggest that poetry-writing fans check their poems weren't also used.

Fandom plagiarism, still so much fun, now with poetry!

Copied from the old thread. (Not the OP, but I find these links interesting.)

Some ladies in StarWars fandom want more ladies in their EU: http://www.eucantina.net/archives/11959

A WILD NECKBEARD APPEARS: http://www.eucantina.net/archives/11915 Ladies need to STOP THINKING ABOUT GENDER. VAGINAS RUIN EVERYTHING.

A lady thinks that might be short-sighted: http://clubjade.net/?p=39261

A kindly fella wants the vagina-addled wimmenz to know WHY there are no ladies in Star Wars:

Honestly I thought that guys article was fine. It’s the story that’s important.

If you want a reason why there are less women than men in Star Wars it’s probably something to do with it being a series with a lot of action and ... we’re just born more physically and mentally predisposed to it. http://clubjade.net/?p=39261#comment-28450

I hope this wanks far and wide. Carry on.

An olden-timey, popular contributor is walking away from TV Tropes and why? Because apparently the site owner is inconsistently censoring TV Tropes pages. I'm hoping someone who's better at this than me can cover this one. I'm not sure if there's funny to be had or not.

Madcap publisher hijinks. Notorious jerk Anthony Gregoriano runs a few "small press" outfits and styles himself a "writer" and a "publisher". He also doesn't pay writers. And he "edits" their work as he pleases. He should have a wank thread for how truly bad he is at his chosen craft. But, read on, because it gets good for some value of good that might end up really awful.

Aspiring author Mandy doesn't Google this guy—being by all accounts a trusting soul—and gets screwed. http://mandydegeit.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/when-publishing-goes-wrong-starring-undead-press/ This is really, really egregious. Grammar errors, gendering a non-gendered character, naming a character, hinting at bestiality and rape.

Alyn Day picks up her courage and blogs about her run in with Gregoriano: http://alyndayofthedead.blogspot.ca/2012/05/suffering-in-silence.html Yuck.

The stories crawl out of the woodwork like we wish Tony there would crawl back into it.

He, of course, has his own thread on Absolute Write: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7278452

Most recently? He doubles down by informing Alyn Day, who is local to him, that he'll be showing up at her house soon. Via Facebook.

Brony Wank!

http://equestriamlp.livejournal.com/347648.html#comments

Wolf78 can't understand why people draw humanized my little pony characters as *gasp* black. Thus proceeds a long and racist wank. This leads to a banning on the part of awesome mod, but not before whiny and entitled shit goes down.

For added fun, check out his journal!

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/

Here are some relevant whiny posts there, including a uncomfortably racist drawing of the character in question:

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/511287.html

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/511749.html

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/512210.html

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/512290.html

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/512879.html

http://wolf78.livejournal.com/513090.html

So apparently we're all lesbian cunt fag trolls, our mod is a like a "nazi of old" for banning him because it's based on us not respecting him as a furry (?) and lots of talk about what the character Twilight Sparkle would be in "reality".

Oh yeah. It's a live one.

There's only type of woman for Christopher Hart.
(Anonymous)
2012-05-17 10:20 pm UTC (link)
Small but long-standing chronic author (artist? The jury's out on that) wank.

Christopher Hart is the author of a number of those 'How to Draw Manga'-style books. In his "How to Draw the Most Irresistible Creatures on the Planet!" he has a chapter on 'feminizing' cute little animals. A reviewer doesn't take this well. He takes the critique even worse. [http://comicsworthreading.com/2010/05/09/cartoon-cute-animals/]

In the comments on his dA page, Hart claims that a number of his detractors are those who were turned down for a job with him and they're all overreacting. [christopher-hart.deviantart.com]

For some extra sadface, I did a quick search on the 'christopher hart' tag on Tumblr and found...well, a lot of the same, really.

Women are there to be sexy: [http://introducingemy.tumblr.com/post/11099313107/chris-hart-has-taught-me-that-women-in-comics-just] and [http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/19463049562/i-love-how-men-arent-just-fully-clothed-in] and [http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/19423881064/thats-christopher-hart-teaching-us-how-to-draw]

(eschergirls.tumblr is a lovely blog dedicated to the swaybacked spine-breakage and boob-armor common in comics and, thus, has its own Christopher Hart tag.)

Star trek reboot; again with K/S fans vs S/U fans
(Anonymous)
2012-05-18 11:02 am UTC (link)
at fandomsecrets
http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/890146.html?thread=546401570#t546401570

Two K/S fans battle it up with others saying that S/U fans are making every K/S related secret posted in the community for some reason (note: the OP is a K/Bones fan anyway http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/890146.html?thread=546940194#t546940194 but both the OP and their point are getting ignored) They say that S/U fans are more wanky than K/S fans and they're the worst shippers of the whole universe (reasons missing). Some are called hypocritical.
Some S/U fans are replying to the accusations saying that K/S fans are just trying to cover their tracks.
Someone then decided to randomly put the word "homophobic" in the wank just in case someone was missing it (star trek wank is not star trek wank without people getting called homophobes or racists)
http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/890146.html?thread=546950946#t546950946
Best part: someone is clearly making some stuff up about S/U fans with comments about their supposed massive homophobia and how S/U fans violated her or something like that because she's a Uhura/Gaila shipper. I don't even know if such a ship actually exists.
Troll or failed attempt at humor? (both?)

The Homestuck Shipping Olympics master list of 'trigger warnings' includes some pretty ridiculous shit. People have already been tossed for questioning it in the comments.

Please, someone, anyone, write up the nonsense going on in the Dear Author comments in this post about the ongoing DOJ price fixing suit: http://dearauthor.com/features/industry-news/doj-lawsuit-update-where-windowing-becomes-important/

Author On Vacation in particular is a one-person wank machine.

For unfunny. "Straight white males don't have it easy," DocSeuss is Merely a Prototype complains, "I'm a straight while male and let me tell you how my life sucks and it would have been better had I been born anyone but a straight white male."

He does not get it.

As we all know, Hitler started out by categorising self-published authors as "self-published"
(Anonymous)
2012-05-21 01:39 pm UTC (link)
Self-published author Michael Robb Matthias make a self-promotional post in the forums of Fantasy Faction. Fantasy Faction is perfectly okay with authors promoting their work, provided they do it in the proper place, but moves said post into the "self-published and small presses" category where it belongs.

http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/advertising-your-novels/the-wizard-the-warlord-the-wardstone-trilogy-iii-chs-1-5-in-pdf-free/

Robb duly takes this for the TERRIBLE INSULT that it is.

http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/advertising-your-novels/mods-please-read-this-post!/

"I am not a small press. I am an author with 18 titles for sale. That is more titles that some big publishing houses. I have advertising currently running in Locus, Publishers Weekly, Fantasy and Sci Fi, and Revolver magazines. I have blog advertising across the entire blog-o-sphere. I am not a small press or even self published. M. R. Mathias' books are PUBLISHED by Michael Robb Mathias Jr. and should be treated no differently that any big named publishers title. WHY? Because I do my job as a publisher too. Please quit sending my posts into the self published/small press thread. My titles are neither. I have 92k twitter followers @DahgMahn and 10 titles in their genre bestselling list. There is nothing self pubbed, or small, about books written by M. R. Mathias.
Thank you,
M.R.Mathias' publisher, Michael Robb Mathias Jr."

Commenters point out that this is... not really the best way to go about things and are accused of e-bullying, being sick, petty, and "jelous".

The mods close things despite the protests of a crowd of gleeful spectators on Twitter who aren't ready for the drama to end yet. Fantasy Faction posts a follow-up the next day. http://fantasy-faction.com/2012/the-man-who-thought-he-was-king#comment-18594

But the fun continues on Twitter, where among other things, Mr Robb calls Fantasy Faction NAZIs and complains of CENSORSHIP. He has at least four aliases on Twitter: @Michael_Robb @BookReTweeter @MrStubbs @NocturnMP3. But don't worry, they are, he informs people, all "licensed". Are YOUR twitter handles "licensed," peons? I THINK NOT!

https://twitter.com/#!/dahgmahn seems to be where most of the action is -- but at one point, NocturnMP3 (admitted as being another sock) steps into defend ...himself:

@fantasyfaction You suck, but only for banning M.R. He did NOTHING WRONG!
https://twitter.com/#!/NocturnMP3/status/204342433033629696

Further highlights include this, to author M.D Lachlan:

https://twitter.com/#!/DahgMahn/status/204538148330549248

@mdlachlan Ah you have publishers? 5th draft? You must suck as a writer. My #bestseller was wriiten with a pen in a prison cell. Two drafts.

WITH A PEN IN A PRISON CELL.

For your pleasure, you may also marvel at the spinning skulls and note the name of the main character of his latest book on his website, here http://www.mrmathias.com/MichaelRobb

Has anyone reported about The Story Siren post plagiarism fiasco yet?

Smart Bitches Trashy Books has a good post about it: http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/blog/plagiarism-and-the-story-siren

Here is a guest post on TSS about - wait for it - the dangers of plagiarizing. This is what has brought back the issue to the surface:
http://www.thestorysiren.com/2012/05/lets-talk-about-plagiarism-with-sarah-cross.html

Hidden below it is one of her faux-pologies:
http://www.thestorysiren.com/2012/05/lets-talk-about-plagiarism.html

There have also been reports of TSS' more rabid fanbase bullying the blogs that she plagiarized from via e-mail.

Hetalia kink meme discusses historical sensitivity
(Anonymous)
2012-05-22 01:55 pm UTC (link)
For unfunny fandom.

It starts with this Vietnam/America torture request: http://hetalia-kink.livejournal.com/21382.html?thread=90690438#t90690438

An anon drops by to say that it's too soon to make such requests about the Vietnam War. A debate quickly breaks out, but the mod deletes it and freezes the thread.

The party continues in the discussion post: http://hetaliakinkchat.livejournal.com/598.html?thread=1647190#t1647190

Highlights include people suggesting that the English-speaking fandom should only worry about historical issues that are sensitive to English-speaking fans and, on the opposite side, anons blaming Americans for being ego-centric and fetishizing other countries' history (such as Nazis) but whining when the same is done to them.
