Got no links but a Twilight fanfic author pulled her fic and now had a lawyer send a cease and desist letters to anyone re-distributing copies of it. For "copyright infringement" and "libel."

Someone better find some links because the entitlement is golden.

The links are all in a locked community.

Here is the author who is sending the C&D and her site. http://www.tby789.com/

What? They registered their fic with the US Copyright Office? Why?

after posting it on fanfic.net they got popular and then while keeping it up changed the names and sent it to the copyright office to protect their speshul stories and plots because before someone's fic got ripped off by some psycho lady who changed the names and self-published and was doing fairly well until someone told the original author. then the authors took them down (either to protect them to protect some charity thing theyre doing from a smut connection since the stories are all porn or to publish) and one of them threatened legal action against the people distributing the fics around to other people with a cease desist ltr.

How can copyright something that violates the original creator's copyright?

That's what I was wondering. Y HALO THAR Stephenie Meyer, mind if we hitch a ride on your gravy train?

I'm no lawyer though, and discussions about copyright and fair use and trademarks make my eyes cross, so maybe this is one of those gray areas. Still, the chutzpah in registering a copyright on a fanfic is pretty mind-boggling.

It was a modern-day AU in which everyone was human (and completely OOC, at least from what little I know of the fandom), so if she changed all the names it'd just be a mediocre piece of het smut with no obvious Twilight connection. She could probably even get it published - lord knows I've seen worse from epubs out there.
