Macy's in Union Square (San Francisco) has fired their longtime (20 years) Santa for a "racy" (yeah maybe for 1955) joke (that he only tells ADULTS) reported by two old fogeys who thought it wasn't funny. ONE complaint and he is fired. The joke? He asked the (adult, remember?) woman if she'd been good this year and she said "yes" and he said "that's too bad."

Yep, that's it. That's the Joke that Got Santa Fired.

Comments have EXPLODED, almost 400 since the story posted earlier this evening. They mostly fall into the "Boycott Macy's!" category with smatterings of "Why would adults sit on Santa's lap? That's just creepy" and the "there has to be more to the story than this!" theorists, plus some calls of "name names so we can pay back the Grinches who got Santa fired!" and a loosely woven back-and-forth "bet they were PC liberals/bet they were uptight conservatives/oh yeah/no U" that will get them both coal in their stockings FOR SURE.

Funny comments generally quote "Miracle on 34th Street" with people vowing to "shop at Gimble's instead!" but there are others.

Has the makings of a PR disaster for the store. Thread is full of email addresses, store phone numbers, etc.

Pretty much they fired most of the staff, brought in people who have worked on other FF titles, and will keep the game free until they figure out what the hell they are going to do with the thing. For folks who played the open beta or got in with release then quit, I can vouch that the game is much better now. It is not GREAT mind you, but $40 for the game and free-a-month is a very reasonable monthly fee for it.

I expect the forums at ZAM and Eorzeapedia to go apeshit right about... now.

A huge shake up at the Onion AV Club. It seems that one of the paragraphs in their comics round up was on a comic book that hadn't even been finished yet, let alone published. Oops. RPer has special sparkly snowflake original character in a LJRP game. Character is totally reliant upon ~YEARS AND YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT~ gained by playing elsewhere and apparently likes to spring this on the players of different versions of the characters hers once interacted with. Character also has shitloads of powers. None of this (the previous game interaction or powers) were mentioned on character's app when s/he joined the game.

Player is asked to tone down the powers and stop giving other characters surprise canonmates without permission. Player throws a hissy and insists that doing so would render the character unplayable. Mods tell her to take a hike. Player posts badly-formatted writeup to Bad Mods Suck, where s/he deletes some comments but refuses to respond to most of them. S/he leaves that to his/her white-knighting sockpuppet - er, mediator - volcanflamberg, who demands transcripts of everything said between the mods and the player and resorts to condescension and name-calling when the mods refuse to break confidentiality.

Person on the Inception kink meme plagiarizes from a deceased author's fanfic. When cornered, the accused plagiarizer feebly claims that she has a habit of "saving" fics she likes (the "Cassie Claire defense" (http://community.livejournal.com/inception_kink/14849.html?thread=31586305#t31586305), as one commenter calls it). Mods make a public announcement, and are consequently accused of being overly hostile. Anon comes out to play and everything goes to hell.

Had I more time and attention to spare at the moment, I'd be attempting a better write-up than this. Might still try if no one else gets around to it by the time I do.
