Lawyers try to argue that girls as young as eight participated in sex willingly with a B.C. man who "availed" himself of sex tourism. Also that it was okay, because he wasn't violent with them!

I'm not sure how they're even able to prosecute this, since the acts he committed were done overseas. If what he did wasn't illegal by Cambodian or Columbian law, I don't see how they have a leg to stand on.

They could persecute him trying to obtain child porn, maybe?

According to the story, they've got him on child porn charges as well. That's his argument his lawyers are apparently giving "Charge him for the stuff that he did here, not there."

A lot of countries are now trying to bring in legislation to stop and prosecute sex tourists, but it's a slow process.

Hopefully this will help move that along in Canada.

I'm sure a paedophile doesn't just go abroad to abuse, he must have some child porn images or some other related illegal activity done in Canada. Or perhaps they could get him on conspiracy charges?

There are laws in many jurisdictions (don't know if his is one of them) that specifically prohibit people from traveling abroad for sex with children.

There's no general "whatever happens in X country stays in X country" principle in international law that overrides local legislation.
