a lot of people who liked to help gnn dogpile others realize that they, too, were being assholes.

and has ended up hurting the cause of social justice.

That doesn't really make sense and shows the usual belief that prejudiced people need to be coddled and are, really, more important.

Notice how your writing suggests that the actions of less than five people is somehow, in your claims, damaging what a lot of people who never even heard of these people do to, you know, not be under constant assault of prejudiced behavior.

What you say really is bullshit. GNN has pretty much zero impact on social justice as a whole.

You people should stop claiming that (single minority person) or (single ally) being rude somehow invalidates what every other minority person/ally did.

Oddly, I don't see people making the argument of the reverse: Say, a straight person being a massive homophobe doesn't magically mean that all other straight people are now lesser and all their efforts taken down a notch.

I dunno about that. I've run into people saying that all straight people are automatically homophobic, and that straight people can't truly be good and honest allies...

HOWEVER! Your point totally remains that such extreme positions are, well, rather silly. GNN's antics do not somehow magically discredit all SJ activists, just like the existence of straight homophobes doesn't mean all straight people are homophobic.

Yep, pretty much. They just don't work.

Original AYRT - Hmm. I am not sure I entirely agree with you. I shall have to consider this for myself at further length.

I will point out that when I wrote that up, I was writing up what the consensus of that community, which I am merely a lurker on, appeared to be - to me, at least, I could certainly be wrong. For myself, I agree with some parts and disagree with others. I shall consider whether or not I need to disagree with more.

However, I would argue that you are making quite a leap in generalizing from 'hurt the cause of social justice' to 'invalidates what every other minority person/ally did'. I think the point argued is that, if one person represents a cause badly to five other people, therefore diminishing that cause in the eyes of those five people, doesn't that hurt the cause? It's very small, yes, but...?

Suggesting that one person of color being called out for being a rude and prejudiced asshole on one community with a few hundred active members at most "hurts the cause of social justice" is hyperbole-tastic!
