Oh Bleach. You are just so controversial! What IS it about you, a conventional manga about power-ups and swords that makes people go crazy?

I agree! Why is Bleach all about the shipping? Surely there is more to discuss here than shipping. Like the return of Rukia...and several other popular shinigami characters.

OneManga's Bleach forum is skeptical from the get-go about this week's spoilers. LoneWolfStark laments,

	I don't see how any of this is surprising to people. From what I've heard, this arc hasn't been well received in Japan so it was only a matter of time before Kubo shoehorned in the shinigami to boost Bleach's ratings in Shounen Jump. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

You'd be amazed at how many "unsurprising" things get overlooked by fans only to feel seriously whip-lashed by them later.

Some fans feel that Kubo should screw his fans and do what he wants, and others feel Kubo should pay up and give the fans what they want. The problem is that fandom can be too polarizing to take both sides into consideration.

Though I think the "how much money was Kubo losing" was a bit below the belt. Seriously?!

People love the shinigami, not all fans, but a whole lot of fans do, I for one am thrilled to have them back. And if the drop in sales put some pressure on Kubo to bring them back then I won't complain about that, I don't care about the reasons for bringing them back. To show you the other side of the coin, I'm astounded there would be any wank at the shinigami being back, we have Byakuya back, and Renji, and Rukia. Tha shinigami are back, and nothing hurts.

Kubo re-using existing characters is a bad thing, now? I thought the general consensus was that people wanted him to focus on the ones he's already got, rather than just creating dozens of new ones every time he needs to move the plot along.

	We have dozens of shinigami but we only ever see the same 6-7 fan favorites and it's getting really boring for those of us who are not particularly fond of them. How about letting some of the others have some time in the spotlight? Like Soifon or Unohana. (Reply to this)(Parent)

I can't speak for anyone else but as for me, this doesn't have anything to do with shipping. Sidelining the human characters for the sake of the shinigami is something I've always hated about Bleach. And the way it was done here was pretty much like a slap in the face. You have the human characters in an interesting situation, you even have Ishida coming in like the cavalry, you expect some good fight and an interesting resolution, then suddenly - SHINIGAMI! THEY'RE ALL THAT MATTERS! (And this after poor Chad and Orihime working so hard for Ichigo's sake.)

I knew this moment would come sooner or later, but I really hoped it wouldn't happen like this.

I joined "the other girl's" special dedicated forum just to see that hive of scum and villainy for what it really is and the wank that goes on behind closed doors, but so far it's been disappointing. Barely any wank and the deliusional theories are no match for the "Orihime is mentally retarded" and "Ulquiorra just wanted to help her realize that her dependency on Ichigo is bad" sort of stuff that we have on the other side.

Btw, I like how they emphasize the "closed registration" part (it wasn't closed when I joined), when there's a blatantly anti-IchiOri club which just happens to have closed membership.

So apparently in the special message from the creator in the Bleach movie 4 DVD, Kubo put in a rather nonstandard (wanky, even!) message:

"In this movie I was credited as "Executive Director".
However honestly speaking, for the DVD version I want that title to be removed. I already asked them to do so. This is because I feel I didn't participate enough in the production of this movie to warrant such a title.

I already had this feelings since the premier of the theatre version, however when I met with the producer staff to persuade them, the movie was already in the editing process so it couldn't be removed.

I had a meeting with the scriptwriter - I think it was in the year preceding the movie premiere, in early summer.

The meeting was incandescent, and we discussed ideas until nearly dawn. The scriptwriter took careful notes of the ideas that I had contributed jointly during the meeting. The response was that we were able to come up with some very interesting stuff. I had the feeling that before winter at the latest the scenario would be completed - but in the end, the scenario was sent to me only in the spring of the year of the movie premiere. Furthermore, the scenario didn't contain any of the ideas of the meeting... apparently, the notes taken at that time were not transmitted to the director and to the other members of the staff.

Later on, we had some trouble with the production department agreeing to some changes decided by the scriptwriter, and the scriptwriter worked hard with the changes that were made - but unfortunately, there was no more time.

The fact that characters that first made their entry in the original work like Ichigo, Kokutou and Shuuren had a very Bleach-like feeling is thanks to all of the seiyuu that gave them their voices, and to all of the staff that drew them.

Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart."

For a creator to include such comments with a movie is downright bizarre, and shows that Kubo must have been quite angry with his input being ignored, his suggested changes failing to be included due to time, and his name then stamped on the final product. His praise of the seiyuu and animators is a (barely) passive-aggressive attack on the rest of the production staff.

Of course the IchiRuki fandom is chortling over this, since the movie adored by the IchiHime fandom was so publicly dissed by Kubo himself while the last movie that focused on Ichigo and Rukia had only positive comments from him. But no worries, Nocturne has a theory: much like how worthless hack Mark Halperin said that the story of John McCain's eight houses in 2008 was good news... for John McCain!, Kubo's griping about the movie is good news... for IchiHime!
