Did I say that Andrew should be "burned to the ground"? No. Did I say that anyone should "bash" him? No. Please stop putting words in my mouth.

What I said was, "I do hope that he gets help and I'm not saying that he should be locked up or anything..." People should keep in mind everything he did and remember that whatever his issues are, they may explain some of his actions, but they do not excuse them. Many fandoms are very open and supportive; people like to help each other out and jump in to collaborative projects with both feet. Andrew's story should be a reminder that it's important not to take things at face value, but to ask questions and verify information before (for example) donating time and money to help put together a start-up convention. If we decide not to hold Andrew responsible for his actions in BoE based on the word of an internet psychiatrist, this loses its power as a cautionary tale. No one said literally that Andrew should be excused for what he did. However, by comparing him to Brandon Teena and putting his actions on a level with check fraud before explaining it all away with armchair-psych diagnoses, the anon to whom I replied seemed to be trying to make a case for it.

Since you seem to have missed this part in my previous comment, I will make it more explicit: I agree that Andrew needs therapy and I sincerely hope that he gets it. But if people are really interested in helping him, it would be much more effective and meaningful to contact him directly rather than engage in this sort of public speculation. He most likely is not reading these comments anyway, and they tend to lend credence to those people who want to minimize what he did to Abbey, Little Sam, and others in his inner circle.
