Kachingle vs webcomics?

As near as I can figure, it's a company that wants to function as the internet's tip jar and help people give small amounts of money to the producers of free content, I guess so those people can continue providing free content. Which yeah, fine, whatever... but apparently they don't bother contacting the producers of said free content before accepting money on their behalf.

Google says that this company tried to stir shit with the New York Times about their paywall or something last winter:

According to a post on the company's website from the CEO (http://blog.kachingle.com/2011/11/a-word-from-our-ceo/) they just spent a week targeting webcomics, which seems like it would produce quite a bit of wank. Does anyone have any idea what the hell's going on here? Or is this something that's just starting?
