Can I just check on what you mean by nationality?

Because to me (and to most people in the British Isles), it means what country you are a citizen of - ie, what country's passport you carry or are entitled to. Ethnicity is what we'd call your descent. Therefore, Irish citizens don't actually regard Irish-Americans as Irish nationals, because the word means something different over here. However, most would cheerfully regard Americans who have moved to Ireland and become naturalised Irish citizens as being "Irish" (while still also considering them American in the sense that they still talk like that).

So I wonder if there's a language gap going on as well.

Am I allowed to be confused?

Mother is from the Republic of Ireland
My grandfather on my father's side is also from the Republic of Ireland
My grandmother on my father's side is from Northern Ireland
My father was born here in England
I was born here in England

But, my surname has French origins, going back centries...

I am entitled to either an English or Irish passport, depending on which I choose, and the vast majority of my relatives are Irish because they reproduce like bunnies.

Which passport do you want to have? Then that's what your nationality is. Your ethnicity - Norman Anglo-Irish, I presume. If it's Norman French, please don't forget to claim your proud Viking heritage at the door as well.

(BTW, you might want to check the rules if you want an Irish passport, since they changed them a few years ago. Bah for Irishwomen whose husbands were hoping to find an easy way out of the whole national identity debacle.)

I have a crapload of relatives up there, on both sides of my family, and my parents went to school at Michigan Tech. So I get to visit the U.P. a lot, and eat pasties <3

So my question is, is that great sense of humor shared by most of my Irish-American friends something they picked up over here to compensate for no longer being Irish? Did their great-great-grandfather Seamus O'Rourke wake up one day, read the papers, and say, "Bloody 'ell, turns out wee old Ireland wunna allow me to be o' th' Irish nomore. Guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor to compensate"? Then he stopped hating the English quite so much and took up gay-bashing instead?

Oh, I am so totally in there.

I'm always getting into this debate, especially around the middle of March, and it never goes anywhere. I really have to conclude that the entire thing is just a big misunderstanding over terminology and the cultural import of ancestry to Americans. I still haven't come up with a good way of getting foreigners to understand why American attitudes towards nationality/ethnicity are so important.

It made me bloody nervous when I went to Ireland a few years back, though, because I assumed that the Irish would all be fantastically irritated with us just for being Americans with an Irish surname. Instead, we just met a really lovely little old nun who thought that the States were the greatest place in the world because she had relatives there who sent her a really nice bicycle when she was a child. Also, there was a room with a wall full of famous Irish-Americans at the Dublin airport, but I didn't get to see that until we were leaving and it was too late to do much good.

I can understand where darthfi is coming from since I've got a friend who is big on the claiming other nationalities thing. She really gets her wank on whenever I remind her that she's American (especially when she starts to rip on US of A). She's gets all "no I'm not! I'm Brittish and Polish and Irish! How dare you?!" She also found out she's ...10% Jew or something and started claiming that as well (which I'm all WTF because I've got family members actually escaped before the Holocaust). She's gotten a bit better now, but she is planning a trip Ireland and Brittian this summer, so I hope it'll enlighten her.

On another note, I may be a bit of a hypocrite, as I am guilty of heritage enthusism myself. Biggest crime: slaughtering Gaeilge. So clamp me in irons.
