Potter for Profit? Maybe!
Is selling your fanfiction at $80 dollars per book bad? Especially when the entire hardback 6 volume original series is only $20 more? Apparently, not if you are a Harry/Ginny shipper.

So, the backstory. Over here a prominent Harry/Ginny fanfiction author has a series of Harry Potter fanfiction novels for sale. The prices seem rather high--the lowest of them is $50.00 for a single book. Particularly when other novel-length fanfictions on the same site are a quarter or half the cost. Additionally, there is an audio book partially available as well, though apparently it's free.

There's been a recent upsurge in posts on F_W regarding fanfiction being sold. In this one, a poster makes a comment pointing out that not only in the Star Wars fandom does this happen, but also the aforementioned Harry/Ginny shipper has done it as well. The first few posters agree it's a bit ridiculous. But then the H/G author herself shows up and claims that it's not copyright infringement to be selling her fanfiction for large sums of money. I guess the reason why is that, allegedly, she makes no money off the deal, so it's a-ok to do this. It's also allegedly a "zine" in theory, though I've not heard of any $80 zines lately, and as far as I know most zines tend to have more than one story and different authors in them.

Needless to say, people who ridicule Harmonians for just about anything show up in droves to defend this author's right to charge very large sums of money for her fanfiction. I guess if a known H/Hr shipper points it out, it cannot be wanky (a H/Hr shipper noticing wank makes it nonwanky? Who knew?), or it's the H/Hr shippers fault for pointing it out. Even mice cannot comment without being lambasted. It's good to know you can sell your fanfiction all you want and for 4 times the price of a regular book as long as you call it a "zine". It's not copyright infringement then, I suppose.

I have here a 200 page fanfic, er, "zine". I'll charge $45 dollars "for publication costs." Any takers?

ETA:While the author of the fanfic has denied making money on this deal, another zine publisher states that they have dealt with the same publisher, and that at these prices, profit is happening, and most likely by the author, since the publisher only takes a commission. Unless directed elsewhere, the author gets the rest of the profit.

ETA II: Apparently, the fanfic author has some correspondence online with the site in question.

Has anyone actually bought the damn thing? 'Cause, trust me, just because a zine is offered for sale doesn't mean that anyone will actually buy it.

I wouldn't know. But I'd rather not limit the crazy that is the HP fen. Buying laptops for BNFs is old hat, right?

Forgive my n00bish, but what is the average cost (or what you usually buy) for zines?

Nah, that's not n00bishness. Zines can cost anything from nothing (small giveaways -- we used to hand out Not the MediaWest Program Guide every year, three to four legal sheets, double-sided and saddle-stitched) to $50 for something really elaborate (we're talking massive page count, multiple color illustrations, foiling, foldouts, nice binding, inserts, etc.). At the moment, the going rate for a couple hundred 8.5x11 pages is $15-$25. But you can still find new zines for $5-10 dollars (hooray for digests!), and used zines for $0-10. (If you're at a con, shop around -- Someone was selling a used copy of one of my friend Susan's zines for more than the cover price, when it was still available new at her table.)

At last year's MediaWest, I paid around $15 a pop for a couple of new zines, and found a pile of really old, classic Trekzines left outside somebody's room door for freecycling. And a bunch of Buffy novels. And some lovely manga.

See, that's what I thought it would be, because lengthy, image-heavy, quality magazines are around that price.

Now, when you say binding, are you talking about hardcover binding? Or just a stiffer, wider spine and cover? Are people paid for contributing artwork? It would be fic-based art, right, not just general? Are there zines for just art? And it sounds like the zine market is pretty fluid. I mean, easily accessible, at any rate. Are there advertisements in zines? Sorry I ask so many questions, and thank you for the information on the pricing!

As pointed out here from a fanzine publisher, $50 is like the absolute top range. She also states that the author here is likely making money, since she seems convinced that the publisher is not (and seems to be quite certain, in fact). Which, I might add, directly contradicts what the author stated in the fandom_wank post I linked to. So, we have the author saying she doesn't get paid, while a separate fanzine publisher stating that someone is getting paid, and most certainly the author here. This is getting really fascinating.

Oh, shoot no. I've never heard of a hardcover zine, though that of course does not mean that one doesn't exist. Sometimes they're side-stapled, sometimes comb- or ring-bound, and sometimes perfect-bound like a paperback book. There's also saddle-stitching (stapled like a comic).

Artists get a trib copy same as writers. Usually you're assigned a story to illustrate, or a cover illustration, but there are also cartoons, fillos (filler illustrations), and stand-alone pieces. There aren't many U.S. artzines -- sometimes somebody will do a coloring book, paper dolls, or a self-published sketchbook. (Japan is a completely different story.)

Ads are listings for other fanzines, or solicitations for submissions for upcoming zines. Back in the day there were several adzines, published on a theoretically regular basis and made up of nothing but zine listings, but I haven't heard of one for years. They were a lot of work, and have been made more or less obsolete by the speed of the Internet. Same with letterzines, which were sort of like 'net boards or LJ communities, only much slower and with better punctuation.
