Also Oh noes! We're all anti-breastfeeding!

GAH. Why must people try to continue the wank in the wank communities?

Because if they don't open our eyes to the glory that is breastfeeding and flipping over baby clothes, then we'll lead lives of quiet desperation.

If this is desperation, keep me desperate.

Anti-breastfeeding = not thinking every aspect of lactation is magical and not believing claims like your kid's diapers smell like baked goods?

Though this does open up new opportunities for the "breast milk donation" market.

That was one of the things that boggled me the most (besides the icon with pubic ponytails). She just hands her friend gallons of her own breast milk and is surprised that they didn't use it, because they were poor and should have known better on so many levels, and it was such a waste, she lamented.

I'd not heard about breast milk "banks" before this wank, but I applaud her friend for not taking it, just considering the source.

Oh man, I first heard about them on TV (one of the local newstations did a story) but I didn't really believe it because who believes what they see on TV these days?

The Internet, of course, is a virtual font of information.

Oh, and breastmilk banks=ick. What if the donater was eating mercury tainted fish or taking crack? Ew.

Very cute. Care to sign your posts little mousie? Cow milk is 'tested' too. Would you trust unpasturized cow milk with your kids? Why would you do the same for milk from a complete stranger? Ew, ew, ew.

*has found a new level of disturbed*

I've heard anecdotes of new neighbours welcoming people with home-made puddings which they made with their own breastmilk. I insist that these stories are bogus to stop me from going and sitting in a corner to quietly rock back and forth.

OK, the pudding thing I hadn't heard. I did read an article from a woman who had breastmilk frozen though her sons had weaned themselves long ago and she decided to make sourdough bread starter with it. Apparently that went well for her though personally I'd just as soon not eat any.

But I've heard worse... let's not go there.

I just read in the Sunday NEW YORK TIMES this weekend that in the early part of the 20th Century, breast milk banks were actually kind of common.

Well, that actually makes a lot of sense, when you consider that there wasn't really any even kind-of sort-of not-crappy formula until the late 19th century...

This particular person brings out the wtf reaction in me.

This person is ok with seeing a woman flash her boobs sexually, but the mere idea she might actually feed her child with them is disturbing? Something seems a wee bit backwards here.

Having nursed children, I could tell when my babies were hungry BEFORE they cried, but I doubt this person is experienced with "nursy face." And my children were very random about when they got hungry, sometimes they fed every 45 minutes. When I nursed my kids in public (which I did, under a blankie), I appreciated having a nice place to sit, and other people minding thier own business.

As for formula, it's great! But it's also fucking expensive and a pain in the butt keeping bottles fresh, clean, and the proper temperature. I don't think people should be guilted into using it if they don't want to.

For that matter, I don't see why women should need to cover up their breasts at all. I've seen plenty of men who could use a C cup, letting it all out to jiggle in public. It's just flesh, no reason to turn it dirty.

I must be the only mother who breastfed yet used a bottle and expressed milk for feeding in public places.

Did I miss the section where people were being guilted into formula feeding or am I just blind? I'm seeing lots of efforts to guilt mothers into breastfeeding but I don't recall ever seeing any pressure for anyone to formula feed.

That's a prefectly good solution if you felt uncomfortable breastfeeding in public, and you were able to express sufficiant amounts of milk.

I was never able to express much milk -- like maybe two drops and it was uncomfortable. I got more by handsqueezing, but never more than an ounce or so each try. I saved those little baggies for when I had a sitter. I did buy some formula singles for the same purpose, when I gave up trying to expres, but my daughter never would take a bottle at all, even for a sitter, and cirtainly not if I was around. Just whipping out the blankie and finding a place to sit turned out to be the way to go for me.

The only people pushing mothers to formula feed (or just plain bottle feed) that I came across were people like the one I linked who seemed to think that feeding my child in public was somehow innately gross. And I DID come across that attitude (luckily just in the form of disgusted stares even though I WAS being descrete.) To me that makes about as much sense as someone being offended by sneezing in public.

A mom's gotta do what she's gotta do, and for me the sooner the general public gets over what is essentially a nonsensical hang up about womens breasts being somehow obsene, the better. I mean honestly. Society once thought women's ankles were obsene -- they can do the same thing for breasts.
