Current mood: grouchy

Miscegenation by any other name is just as bad.
I think there might be more examples of this in the pages of comments on that HP daily_deviant wank, but I'm goofing off at work lazy and don't feel like looking for it. So there.

[info]_morrigan_ is yet another person who is surprised at how many people didn't know the term "miscegenation" before the wank. And I was one of them.

[info]elian and [info]dana both point out it's mostly used by Americans, with [info]dana expressing some annoyance on the subject.

[info]melannen is in turn annoyed by all those people from other countries saying they don't see why they should know/use an American term.

Mildly wanky, but a lot of annoyance going around. Justifiable, or ethnocentric? Or can it be both?

Oh, noes! People for who English is a second language don't get all the connotations/ethymology of a word Americans/Australians/Englishmen-and-women themselves had to look up in the dictionary! How dare we?

I'm going with a combination of ethnocentric and lack of reading some of the comments properly (because obviously, saying 'in my country, we don't use that word' = 'in my country, there is no racism and we live in a multi-coloured heaven'), and good grief, can some of those people bring the tl;dr.

My honest opinion is that, for those who do know the word, the idea of some one not knowing it is kind of unthinkable. It's like if you ran into some one who didn't know the n word, or didn't know the n word was bad, you'd be pretty damn shocked and likely might have difficulty imagining anyone not knowing.

I just looked that word up in my handydandy English-German dictionary and I... didn't even know the German term. GJ, me!

PS: Wikipedia's German "version" of the article on miscegenation refers to a Nazi concept. Does that mean this is invoking Godwin's, in some twisted way?

I haven't commented on this, and I don't want to tl;dr or anything, but I'm a British post-grad History student in late C19th imperialistic race relations and I never knew 'miscegenation' was considered such a loaded term. We've thrown it around seminar rooms for hours.

If no-one's told me, ever, none of my lecturers, none of the hundreds of books and articles I've read, then I don't see how the fuck everyone else is supposed to know.

...Osmosis?

I love it when unfunny wank gets posted to FW or OTF, then people make more unfunny wank in the comments, and then the unfunny wank gets posted here, just in case we all still had some faith in humanity left. And then most likely people will wank here, and the rest of us wonder why we bothered waking up at all.

. . .And, of course, even I failed to be funny. How fun.

I think it's mostly justifiable on both parts, but justifiable or not kind of gets thrown out the window when people get wanky about it. It's one of those wanks where you can't even really pick a side, though, because everyone has a good point.

Except for [info]dana, who apparently can go her whole life without learning new things.

It was surprising to me to discover 'miscegenation' was 'American', because I figured with how much it was thrown around lecture halls in seemingly ALL of my classes in my first year of college, it must've been a totally widespread word. But I happened to be on the phone with my dad, who's British, and I asked him if he knew the word, which he didn't.

I think it's worth pointing out, though, that when I explained to him what it meant, he (for some reason) saw fit to exclaim, "I say, did we really need a term for that?!" in an overly British manner.
