Robert thanks the driver and steps out of the car. He's hung over, feeling more than a little sick and is supremely grateful for the pair of sunglasses he bought before leaving Citadel. His rental car will be delivered later that day by the helpful Citadel staff since he was not feeling well enough to navigate his way home when he woke up. Tipping the driver, Robert walks slowly up his parent's walk and then lets himself in. He's not really certain he even remembers all of his talk with Ethan, but Robert figures he can sleep a bit more and think on it when he wakes up later.

Sitting in a quiet lounge of the New York Citadel mansion, Robert stares at the amber liquid in his glass before finishing the entire glass of scotch. He's well aware that he shouldn't be drinking, but in a move reminiscent to the first time he lost Christian, Robert can't do much of anything except reach for the bottle. He lifts his gaze to Ethan, tears clouding them when he lets the emotion of the day finally take him over. "He collared a boy in London," Robert whispers, choking on a sob before he puts the empty glass on the table between them.
( You need to talk, I need to listen, and we both need clear heads to do that. )

10:49 pm - Christian Bale Surprises Robert Sean Leonard at the Academy Awards
Robert sits in the audience, smile wreathing his face while watching Christian on stage. It isn't often his lover is flustered in a crowd of actors, nor is he ever flustered when performing a role, but Robert knows just how much this night and this award to means to him. He bites his lip, aching to be able to grab Christian, hug him and kiss him in congratulations right there in the audience. He'd kept his distance, simply shaking Christian's hand before he went up to the stage. Bringing himself back to Christian's speech when his lover chuckles, Robert beams even harder and then, completely ignoring the fact that the cameras have swung in his direction, he gasps and tears up when Christian thanks both himself and Maddy. The minute Christian is heading off the stage; Robert makes his way out of his seat and nearly bolts toward backstage to intercept his lover.

Academy Award winning actors do not pass out from giving acceptance speeches, Christian tells himself as he walks through the backstage maze. Hands keep grasping his elbows, turning him this way and that, until he's in a near-empty lounge. There are benefits to being one of the earlier awards given out, he thinks as he snaps up a bottle of water and cracks it open.

Good god, he'd actually done it.

Christian's fingers clench around the cool glass bottle, and it feels like he's grasping for reality, like he's been dropped headlong into Chris's last film. There's a brief flash of panic, but then he hears a familiar voice.

Robert thanks the escort who's led him to the green room, voice soft and slightly panicked. He turns into the room and stares at his lover, his partner clutching the water bottle like he wants to strangle it. "Christian?" Robert breathes softly, blinking and stepping closer.

"Hey," Christian says, looking up with an uncertain smile, feeling only slightly calmer than he looks. "What'd you think of my acceptance speech?"

"I-" Robert starts, eyes welling up when his smiled broadly again. He crosses to Christian's side and pulls him against his chest in a tight bear hug. Robert presses his lips to Christian's ear, "I think it was the most amazing thing I've ever heard."

"Give Maddy a hug and tell her that her daddies love her and will be home tomorrow night, okay?" Robert asks their nanny, turning his cell phone off entirely once she's agreed and said goodnight. He's given her the front desk at Citadel and from now on his cell phone will be tucked away and he's relying on Citadel to get him any necessary messages. Looking at his watch, Robert starts when he realizes he spent more time on the phone than he meant to, hurrying to the bar to catch Christian before he leaves for home at the end of his shift.
( God knows what traffic will be like, but he's in more of a hurry now that he's going home to Bobby instead of the nanny. )

Christian's only two and a half hours late, amazingly he thinks, thanks to that magical half-hour when traffic between Citadel and Bobby's house is at a minimum. If he'd been caught in the usual traffic, he'd be off by another half-hour. Forty-five minutes if things were really snarled.

New York in August is a hot sticky month and Robert cannot help but be glad they're spending most of their day in air conditioned shops. While he loves the heat of LA, the humidity of the city's summer often gets to him. He was always thankful to have his parent's home in Jersey to escape to. He looks over at Christian, standing in the racks of clothing situated next to the burp cloths and other assorted baby items. Robert smiles and then makes his way to Christian with several pattern ideas in hand. "Hey love. How do you think we should decorate the baby's room? I have this green based safari theme, this yellow based beach day theme or this orange based sunset motif."

They have maybe another take of it before it'll be time to move on and he can head to meet Christian and Marissa for dinner. When Mindy, his favorite PA approaches, Robert turns with a smile. "Hey, things okay?"

Mindy smiles at him. "Great, Robert. Here's your cell phone. It's rung four times in the last two minutes. I think someone really needs you."

Stretching out on the couch with a fresh cup of coffee, Pythias kneading his stomach to turn it into a comfortable napping place, he flips his phone open, calls up Robert's number, and connects.

"He still gloats you know, when you're not looking."

Each day on the calendar has been dutifully crossed out with an X until today. Today is marked with a circle, an address, and a time. Christian, Marissa, and Robert are at the address, and the time is fast approaching. Not fast enough to calm the butterflies trying to migrate from inside Christian's stomach, though, and he's starting to regret the three bites of toast he'd had this morning. This might have been easier on an empty stomach.
