4:44 pm - CCS fandom sucks
I recently joined a CCS forum (mostly in order to see the threads, because only members can), and I got drawn into participating.

It. Sucks. I've found better conversation at an FF.net forum. At fucking FANFICTION DOT NET. Everyone there is all about loving S+S and E+T and hating non-traditional pairings especially Eriol/Kaho and rarely talking about anything besides pairings and/or Sakura's costumes.

On the other hand, it does seem to be a better sample of the fandom-at-large than LJ or my usual Pit forum, which is the only real reason not to give it up.

Question: Should I start a thread, asking why the majority of members say that E/K is their least favorite pairing? It's not trolling; I really do want to know why, to see if it has any basis to it. Because I suspect that it doesn't, or it has a false basis (like "Kaho is a pedophile").

3:40 pm - Hyatt vs. TvTropes Wiki
(Sakura asks Eriol about the religious beliefs of the people at the Church. Eriol responds not with a description of Christianity, but with what might as well be a description of Shinto. Sakura is moved when she hears it, and anyone who knows anything about Christianity is hit with a Broken Aesop.)

When did this happen? Must be in the anime, if it happened at all.

(Before I edited): In Cardcaptor Sakura, the final three episodes are given almost entirely to Sakura and Syaoran puzzling out their feelings about each other, to the point of ignoring all else almost entirely.

Guess I just imagined Sakura going back in time to talk to Clow Reed and the final confrontation with Eriol.

Tomoyo acknowledges Sakura is a little dense with subtley and had an almost competely lack of romantic interest in anyone at the time, and decides to explain more fully when they're older. It doesn't really come up again once Syaoran enters the picture; Tomoyo was both a Muggle and largely defined by her relation to Sakura, so it was a pretty serious Road Cone.

Guess I also imagined Sakura's crush on Yukito, and all the times after Syaoran shows up that Tomoyo talks about the "one she loves" with Sakura.

In Card Captor Sakura, we find out that Syaoran's, and to some extent Sakura's, romantic feelings for Yukito were not simply crushes but in fact caused by magic. This effect did not occur to anyone else in similar situations.

Or I didn't imagine it, it just wasn't real. Even though three characters said that it was real and not due to magic or Sakura misunderstanding family love.

And who else would be in that position? Kaho? Eriol? Both of them know all about magic attraction and presumably how to counter it.

The Card Captor Sakura manga last few panels suggests Syaoran and Sakura's relationship gets better and becomes fairly stable, but this is mostly skimmed over, probably due to the disinterest of the young female audience once UST is resolved.

Okay, that time they were just reaching and talking out of their ass. So much so that I deleted it for being a bad example.

I swear, half the CCS examples were written by someone with a hate-on for every character who isn't Tomoyo and who keeps Tomoyo/Sakura from happening. It gets really annoying.

ETA: Though conspicuously missing from the American dub, Cardcaptor Sakura gets plenty of attention from her costume conspirator and confidante, Tomoyo, without actually sealing the deal.

That's all it says for CCS in the "Shipping" article. Who the hell wrote these examples, and what delusional fandom-world do they live in?!

1:26 am - status report: still alive
Also, now moved into my new apartment and sorting out all the residency issues, as well as starting work at the university. It's a variable headache; some parts were easily taken care of, some took some time to get sorted out but went smoothly, and others still need to be resolved.

Not-all-that-funny-anecdote: Less than half an hour after getting auto insurance, I got rear-ended while stopped and waiting for right-of-way. It was a minor accident, with a bit of paint transfer on the bumper and a headache that went away after some ibuprofen, so I didn't swap insurance info with the other driver. I did get him to guide me to the DMV (which was where I was headed at the time), even though I ended up having to go to the other DMV.

BTW, if anyone in the Binghamton area needs a ride, I has a car with room for four. And if anyone knows the way around downtown Binghamton, can I get a guide?

In completely unrelated news, I got the Sims 2 and have started seriously following a family (Touya, Yukito, and Nakuru, for anyone interested). I had a bit of an issue where Touya and Nakuru both loved Yukito and he couldn't flirt with one without the other immediately hating both, but that was solved by a mod that turns off jealousy. Can anyone say OT3?

So, in place of the srs poll about which one should leave the household and join Martha or Donna, here's another poll:

Tomoyo: Satellite Character Y/N?

11:52 am - am actually still alive. also: not homeless!
I gots an apartment! It's a studio, furnished, in a converted house on the South Side of Binghamton, and I really like it so far. I'm moving in mid-June; at least a week before I start working at the university, at least, though that date keeps changing.

First: RL news. I almost have that BS in geology!

Second: A new thing I hate in E/T fics is making Eriol lose his magic so he'll love Tomoyo without the Clow legacy getting in the way. Um, Eriol's Guardians need that magic. Eriol loses his power, they die, and I think he'd be a bit more broken up about that than confused at how he's getting more attracted to Tomoyo as he loses more of his power.

Also, "love makes you a bitch"!Tomoyo. We're supposed to sympathize with her because she's in love with Eriol but not able to express it well, when her form of expressing it is to call him a "manwhore" when he's got every female mooning over him against his will? Especially when she has just as many guys following her?

12:39 am - I find this hilarious
The Love Calculator gives 16% probability of Eriol/Tomoyo working out and 85% to Eriol/Kaho. On the downside, it's giving higher ratings to T/K and T/T than T/Y. It gave about the same rating to S+S as to T/Y, so guess what the fandom will say...

Randomly today, I thought that one of the problems Eriol/Kaho might face in the public appearance of their relationship (especially if Eriol ages up) is that, when Kaho explains that Nakuru is her boyfriend's daughter, people will wonder (in a bad way), what Eriol is doing with a woman no more than a decade older than his daughter.

"Her name was Kaho," he continues. "A piece of work, that older woman. Nothing like you," he adds, smiling softly at her. "I had a credit account set up with her that she was supposed to cancel before I left. I just received a bill the other day."

nnnnnng. There's so much wrong with that one line that I barely know where to begin.

They may not be canon, but they make more sense than Eriol/Kaho, I'm sure you agree?

Only if you judge a pairing making sense by how similar the characters look. Eriol and Kaho have a lot more in common, knew each other longer, know more about each other than Eriol and Tomoyo, and are closer in age.

I'm someone who likes to explore her vulnerable, insecure side, and people don't like when I do that, because I turn her into a real complex woman instead of a perfect one-dimensional Mary Sue cipher.

No, people don't like your Kaho because you regress and warp her character into something that's not recognizable as coming from CCS, much less being Kaho. And your "wahhh I love Touya but our relationship isn't perfect bliss so my life SUCKS!!!" characterization is just as one-note as anything you're bashing. At least manga!Kaho moved on and had fun instead of dwelling in misery.

It's not like there isn't room for complexity and angst for Kaho in canon. What about her place in Clow's plan, and how it ruled her life for a long time? There's plenty of opportunity there, and oh look, it even has built-in Touya angst. If you hate that Kaho's a "Mary Sue cipher", then why do you base your characterization on the version that's more Sueish, more of a mystery, and with less reason and explanation?

8:22 pm - things I've been thinking about lately (instead of working on my thesis)
I've come up with a lot of personal fanon for Kaho.

- She's the only daughter of the head priest and priestess of Tsukimine Shrine. This is important because the "daughter of the shrine" has always been important.

- Her family hasn't left the area around Tomoeda for generations; Kaho is the first to study abroad. Her parents were proud of their little girl getting a broader view of the world than they ever had, but they also assumed that she would always return to the Shrine sooner rather than later.

- Kaho knew that just as she was born as close to the Shrine as permitted by the doctors, she would also die at the Shrine; she knew that almost as long as she understood the concept of death. However, it took her longer to realize that just because she was meant to begin and end her life at the Shrine didn't mean she was going to spend her whole life there.

- For most of her early life, she was always following some plan; either Clow's plan for her role in the fate of the Cards or her parents' plan for her to become the head priestess. Leaving Tomoeda with Eriol was the first time she made a decision based on her own plan for her life, instead of anyone else's.

- When she first met Eriol, she was surprised to discover that he appeared to be a boy; she had always pictured him as the ageless sorcerer Clow Reed. It took far less time than she expected to become used to the reality of Eriol instead of her image of Clow. (She also found out later that, as Clow had foreseen Kaho discovering the Moon Bell as a child, Eriol expected her to be a little girl and was momentarily surprised when the young woman Kaho greeted him.)

- While they don't disapprove of her relationship with Eriol, Kaho's parents would have preferred it if she had ended up with Touya. Not because of the apparent age; they thought that Kaho wouldn't be inclined to stray from Tomoeda and the Shrine if she had Touya, while Eriol only encouraged her to fly farther out and away from her childhood home.

- (One of) Kaho's daughter(s) later returns to Tomoeda and Tsukimine Shrine to become the "daughter of the shrine".

I was also thinking about an angsty post-canon scenario, where Kaho dies childless after only a few years married to Eriol; her parents afterwards blame Eriol for her death and especially ending the line of daughters of the Shrine. They feel that his "children" made Kaho decide to wait to have children of her own until it was too late, and that Eriol shouldn't have encouraged someone as young as their daughter to marry him when he was (apparently) already old enough to have a daughter less than a decade younger than Kaho.

This made me uncomfortable for a while, until this comment. Because yeah, the reverse happens, and no matter how "bad" the muns who left t_d were, the RP was definitely not good.

Also, in outrage news:

"Although I made a lot of very cutting remarks and I'm pretty sure I wounded his feelings severely," Draco pointed out.

BITCH RIPPED OFF GARAK!!! AND TURNED THE ALMOST-QUOTE FROM AMUSING AND SYMPATHY-INDUCING TO LAME! Did CC even admit to "borrowing" from DS9? I know she's most famous for Buffy, with Blackadder also a regular source, but DS9? WRYYYYYY

I knew checking that CCS friending meme was a bad idea.

Not only is there an overabundance of Nakuru-hate, Kaho-hate for her past and ended relationship with Touya, L-chan (luckily not replying to everyone who lists Yukito as a least favorite to commisserate about how oppress0rzed they are), but I also found a competing RP. Okay, so it has that same angst-laden premise as the AU CCS characters in Econtra, but still. Why do they have characters that we don't? *pouts*

I might be leaving for Binghamton tomorrow. "Might" because my plans keep changing based on the weather and I haven't received a reply since my last email with a change of plans. It shouldn't be too hard to reserve a hotel room by myself, though...

ETA: Ugh, and now Kaho's getting hate for "[stealing] Eriol's attention away from other needy females". Dude, TOMOYO AND MEILING ARE TOO YOUNG FOR HIM!!! Not to mention that they have each other if they're that needy; they certainly have a stronger connection to each other than to Eriol.

I'm surprised that idiot didn't hate on Yukito, too, for getting Touya out of the heterosexual pool and robbing him of so many opportunities with the beautiful girls who need a Real Man in their lives.

Should I comment IC with Vicki's journal?

Despite the not-even-sub-anymore-text for Miles/Julian, I can't get into it. Not when Miles/Keiko is still so OTP. And of course, it's the episode where she's not herself that I really fall in love with them. Though the one where she single-handedly tricks Julian and Miles into spending more time with each other in spite of their resolve not to let their friendship take time away from Miles's family is also sweet.

Stage6 is going down on Thursday. It had the best-quality DS9 episodes. I was trying to watch as many as I could while I had the chance, but I've run out of time. Sigh. Hope that season 5 is covered by wow-tv.

Going to visit my first prospective grad school tomorrow, yay! I probably overshot on the dates, but oh, well. And because it's a school-sanctioned trip, it counts as excused absences for all classes I'm missing, including the physics exam.

ETA: I'm serious, it's really getting creepy.

To use a DS9 example (because I have it on the brain), I find it sort of cute that Nana Visitor and Alexander Siddig got together during the run of the show and I'm sort of disappointed that it didn't work out. I also like their characters' interactions, particularly during Visitor's pregnancy. (Though that's probably because of the writers throwing in funny in-jokes. lol Kira to Bashir: "This is your fault" exchange.)

But that doesn't mean I want to see the characters end up together, think that the actors' relationship means that they'll write in a romance between the characters, or suggest that Visitor should hook up with one of her love interests' actors.

Sigh. The mouse just isn't going to get it, are they? They're just going to pretend that we're the ones missing/avoiding the point again, aren't they?

Anyone who thinks all you have to do is be in love and the rest works itself out is going to suffer a lot of disappointment in life.

The only thing that could make that irony more beautiful is if Cal were to comment.

11:37 pm - DS9 fangirling
I'm intrigued by Kira/Garak, and I'm not sure why. They're my two favorite characters, they can both make a scene very interesting and emotional, but there's something... else, and I can't put my finger on what it is. Of course, I realized that I'd be just as happy if they became friends, and only jumped to romance because I'm pretty sure that's the only way Garak would even think of returning to the station ever.

*sigh* Not going to read any Garak fic, though. When half of it is Bashir/Garak and sounds like stereotypical romance, it's going to be much more miss than hit, and the ficcers almost certainly wouldn't get him right in the way that made him so fascinating in the series.

BTW, favorite canon pairing? Sisko/Defiant. And yes, it is canon. He practically tears up when he finds out his new ship is almost exactly like the Defiant, down to the name.
