I was over at a friend's place last week to watch National Treasure on DVD. Because the movie was, um, less than fascinating, we started talking about the LotR movies, in particular RotK because we both liked that one best. I expressed my love for Sam. He expressed his unrational dislike for Sam after he had learned what an annoying whiner Sean Astin was.
I almost, but not quite, asked him when he had begun to hang out with MsA.
A weird clash of fandom and RL, there ...

I wasn't planning on doing this until I read Ribon o kiru. (That's not a compliment.) This will be long.

The heat seems to have passed, so I'm going to catch up on manga I've been reading. (Good thing I decided only to write about manga I read for the first time, because else, I'd have to write about the 40 volumes of Doraemon I've been reading.) I might write a bit later about some magazines I've been reading, too, but I'm not sure. Sorry for the big block of lj-cuts that will follow. You'd think one ought to be able to lj-cut them, but alas.

It's far too hot to sit here and write about manga. (I read Kawahara Izumi's Kôshien no natsu ni warae! and volume one of Maya Mineo's Rashaanu! today, though. Both were good.) Instead, here's a quote from something I found on my HD. I imagine I was planning to publish it on my website.
A few misconceptions about yaoi and shônen-ai:
The Japanese word "shônen-ai" refers to a certain genre and movement of shôjo-manga in the 70s and 80s. Kaze to ki no uta by Takemiya Keiko, first published in the magazine Weekly Shojo Comic in 1976 and completed in 1984, is generally considered the first "real" shonen-ai manga. There was a series of works leading up to the publication of this manga, which featured subtly hinted relationships between young boys and men, but Kaze ... was the first to outright feature sex between two boys. Works in this genre are no longer being written. The (more or less) official term for works featuring male homosexual relationships by women as being published right now is "boys love", or "BL".
"Yaoi" does not mean "PWP", and does not exclusively refer to works that feature sex between two males. The origin of the word is indeed "no climax no punch-line no meaning" (or some translation to that effect), but this term was originally used to describe manga that were just that -- regardless of the pornographic content. The rumour that Tezuka Osamu coined this phrase in reference to modern manga he could see no artistic merit in appears to be true. Only later did it turn to refer to works featuring male homosexual relationships. The word mostly points to parody (dôjinshi, fanfiction). It does not generally point to porn, as it is evident by places such as Surfer's Paradise; the search criteria "yaoi" on the biggest fandom-based search engine on the Japanese net does not solely turn up NC17-rated sites.
Additionally, "shôjo-ai" is not a Japanese word. It is an English word coined by English-speaking people using the Japanese words for "girl" and "love".

I was out all day in one of the hottest weathers of the year yesterday. Suffice to say, I was too beat to read or write anything. Though I did read a few old volumes of Doraemon before bed ... so relaxing, that.

After comparing number of manga read with LJ's kenjimurasame (who foolishly believed he could beat me), I've decided to keep a log of all the manga I read. The entries will feature the cover image, and a quick rundown of what I thought of them.
I should probably note that I often read several manga a day, so this log will (I hope) be updated pretty often. Everything will be under cut, but still. If that's more than what you bargained for when you friended me, feel free to unfriend me again.
And so:
