Banned Books Week
A-hem!

It's been an interesting month, press-wise. No, not for me personally. The only thing I have to report is that this weekend I'm playing with the City of Denver Pipe Band in Sidney, Nebraska. Which is pretty exciting. But.

Really, the big things are two-fold. Number one, Westword, our free rag, approached Phi Alpha Theta about a flyer they'd seen around campus. Was it true that we're* doing a serious lecture about Batman? Why, sure, said we, but we'd rather the crazies not attend. (Because we have plenty of 'em in honors to begin with.) But it's interesting, said they. And here we are, in the events section in the paper, as well as the premiere event for Monday linked from the entertainment section of the website. We're pumped that it will be a great awareness event, not just for Phi Alpha Theta, but also for Metro - people from outside the institution can see how we encourage scholarship.

The second thing is Banned Books Week. Yes, I know, it was last week. Even if some people are unaware of this. Sigma Tau Delta held an event focusing on how libraries and educators deal with banned books and challenges, and the Metropolitan, our campus newspaper, gave us a huge article and photo, and didn't misquote us at all, and it was very very nice. (The paper isn't online yet, or I'd link.) We weren't even expecting them, though I'd mentioned it to someone on staff, but there they were anyway. And that was the source of most of my stress during September, organizing this whole thing and doing a lot for the Batman lecture, and both are coming together nicely.

If any of you LJ goons are going to Batman, drop by and say hello. I'll be wandering around organizing things.

*By "we" I mean we're sponsoring the thing and funding it, but it's actually the brainchild of one of our honors students. People seem to really like the idea that we're encouraging in-house scholarship by having a student lecture, rather than a professional on the lecture circuit. And since I'm the president and all, with great power comes great stacks of forms and appointments with countless bureaucrats.
