7:54p - Cult of Personality
All right, folks.
I am extremely uncomfortable with the cult of personality and fandom. As such, I have updated my userinfo with a statement about what it means to be a public figure of any degree. If you do not agree with this statement, it means I cannot trust you. I cannot trust you to read my friends-only entries; I cannot trust your opinions on what I write; I cannot trust you to not sell me and my personal details up the river should, well, certain things I'm not at liberty to talk about come to fruition.
I am a human being. The same as you. I happen to be holding a drum, or writing an essay, but this does not make me any better or any worse than anyone else. If you believe that press attention makes someone's human status public property, you need to leave now. I won't be adding anyone who I can't implicitly trust to respect my right to privacy. If I'm going to be keeping this thing up, against my better judgment, this is what needs to happen.
For the record, I'm not really talking about the amusement part of fandom. I look at journals like fox1013 or trollprincess, and what they do is not threatening. Fanfic? Usually not threatening. Amusement-fandom, cons, etc.; such expressions come from a place of taking joy in someone else's output, not taking ownership over it. People who collect fifty thousand photographs of their favorite lead singer and track his every movement? CREEPY.
