11:50a - On Ripping Off Celtic Artists
Folks, please, if you're going to rip off my friends' music and upload onto your journal page for the taking...
...well, don't.
There are better ways to share the music you love. Rip a 30-second sample of a couple of songs. Link to their MySpace or band webpages. See if they're on PaddyRockRadio or SunsetStrip.com. (In fact, if you listen to SunsetStrip.com's celtic rock show, you'll be able to listen to the same music through an authorized distributor, and get commentary by a guy who not only knows celtic rock, he lives celtic rock.)
An article in one of the student newspapers here on campus railed against CD prices a couple of months ago. There is no excuse, the author said, for an independent band to charge more than $10 for a CD. No excuse for a major label to do so, either. He then went on a detailed breakdown of the cost in producing the nuts-and-bolts: a pack of CDs costs this much, a jewel case costs this much, therefore, CDs cost the artist or label no more then $5. If a label charges you more than that, you should rip them off because they're trying to gouge you. Piracy is freedom.
BULLSHIT.
Plain and simple.
( If you're currently pirating my friends' music, click here to find out why this pisses me off. )
Please, some of these people were in Titanic. They've suffered enough.
