19th-Nov-2010 11:55 pm - Supernatural Master Rec List
updated: 8/28/08 I had to split the Supernatural Rec lists into two seperate posts due to the rec list reaching the 10k word size limit. I'm debating on moving the rec list onto a seperate HTML document. But will have to give that more thought. In the meantime, please update your bookmarks.

Star Trek

Full Circle by ashkitty (Kirk/Spock) I really loved the outsider pov and this was good.

Supernatural

When I am with you I feel flames again by fleshflutter (Sam/Dean) I loved Dean's voice and the imagery and this was dark but had hope.

29th-Jun-2009 09:28 pm - Favorite Star Trek Reboot Trailer
Here's the link Hopefully it works but it's basically the apple trailer site trailer 3. I love the song (and if anyone wants a copy email me and I'll get it to you tomorrow night) this is actually like a music video and I loved watching this knowing what really happened in the movie.

I also realized that the story for Star Trek is kind of simple in a way and I'm thinking uncomplicated is probably best for movies because you don't really have a lot of time to get into all the details.
27th-Jun-2009 01:13 pm - Reading Habits / Rant
My friend [info - livejournal.com]lovesrain44 I think is tired of hearing me whine about fandom stuff and she said I should instead post to my LJ.

So this post is entirely her fault!

Basically, here's what's going on. My work has cut off LJ and now gmail. In order to read any fan fiction I add it to my ebook device and read during lunch. (this is where 80% of my reading happens during the week) the other 20% is sometimes off my usb stick. They haven't disabled usb mass storage drives at work yet but I would not be shocked if it happens sooner rather than later. And I do read on the weekends but not as much as I'd like.

I sometimes at night only have maybe 30 minutes to an hour online to check my email, go through LJ and DW to see if any new stories are posted. As anyone who is following any of the big bangs knows Supernatural is releasing about 5 stories a day (each over 20k words long) the tardis big bang has posted their stories. I think the Merlin Big Bangs are coming out soon??? I have favorite authors posting to each of these story fests. And I'd love to read their fics.

I noticed this week, and previous weeks for that matter, that with limited time it's really nice to be able to save a story onto my usb device so I can either format it to read on my ebook device, the next day at work, or read it on my work computer through MS Word.

As you can imagine this isn't easy because 99% of the authors (that write fics over 20k words) post their fics in chapters. And a whole bunch of chapters at that. For the 1% of authors that do post to Dreamwidth in a single file or to a website/archive I LOVE YOU!!!!! and I read their stories first. The rest I try to save and merge myself at a later date. I've been lucky to find a few other friends who have more time than me to merge fics and we're swapping fics as we merge them so we can read them on our devices.

What I want to know is what do fans with children, jobs, and husbands do to read fics?

Truly, writers of the Tardis Big bang that opted for Chapters...I'd really like to know why? It's not like it's easy to comment on each chapter (their site isn't efiction based or LJ based). There were no limitations on how much story can be posted. LJ has it's 10k limit. So I can kind of get why a person can't post 50k words at once unless they go to Dreamwidth.

This is 2009. I think most people who have internet have mostly high speed internet and or 56k modems which trust me it's still easier to open one big html file than 5 or 8 mini-html pages. People are not always reading fan fic on their computers anymore. Or they have time to read but not at home and with work places closing shop on blogs, LJ, rottentomates, and gmail, yahoo, hotmail. It's not like everyone at work can access your fic when they do have time to read it. (like me!)

The ability to save a fic quickly is very very nice for the readers. If you want to set your story apart from others in a big way, make your story easy to save. If you want to give your readers more options post to an archive that allows the reader to choose between chapter viewing or single file viewing. Or offer both options when you post your story. Many fans out there are willing to host fics (I'm one of them) But at the moment only 4 SPN big bang authors have asked if I could do this for them. that's 4 out of 255 stories. Some authors were cool enough to post their fics to Dreamwidth so I didn't have to open 20 10 separate html pages to save their stories. (which btw, those will be read last if at all) I'd think as writers/authors you'd want to reach a wide audience. I know I'm just one reader who is saying I'm not doing it anymore. But I have a hard time imagining there aren't more out there who say nothing but skip along to something else based on similar criteria.

If you post a story that's over 8 chapters of html pages and I can't get it in a single file from the author directly or from a friend it's not going to be read. Let alone recommended by me. I don't care if God himself comes down from above and says it's the best story in the world you have to read it.

I have a ratio I kind of work with. I expect 10k words per LJ post. So yeah if the story is 80k words I can accept 8 LJ pages. but if it's only 28k words and there are 8 pages forget it mister. That story should have only been 3 LJ pages at most.

For the Tardis Big Bang stories. What's most annoying about those is you don't even have all the links to the chapter at the top. You have no way of knowing how many chapters are listed. So yeah, I think I'll stick to the authors that posted in a single file for now. Maybe over 4th of July weekend I'll see about downloading the chapters. But truly, no one should have to do that.

Also, single file PDF sucks. really really sucks. I think I know of only one PDF expert and even she does not recommend PDF as a format for ebook readers. PDF does not convert easily to other formats, crashes computers, and does not work on the Kindle and barely on the Sony PRS, let alone iPhones or Ipod Touch. When I say single file I mean single HTML or Word Doc. Unless you've read the Sony PRS manual on how to create PDFs specifically for 6 inch screens it's a format best stayed away from.

There was no specific story or author that prompted this post because as I stated 99% of the authors I run across post multiple chapters via LJ. the 1% of those that don't know who they are and probably already know how much I appreciate them thinking of the readers. And if they don't this post should tell them I do appreciate it.

The other 99% percent of you guys. I get your reasons for posting to LJ. Finding an archive you like is hard, making your own website is even harder and yet you want control over your fic and LJ seems like the best of both options. LJ is great for short stories but it does have it's limitations as anyone that posts long stories should know. So truly I get it. I do. I just wish there was something better than LJ (or even Dreamdwidth) though I will say Dreamwidth with their 50k word count limit went a long ways towards making itself better than LJ. (though a few kinks still need to be ironed out)

I'm not discounting the difficulties of posting single file fics. But there are ways if you don't have your own web hosting space. I've seen authors use megaupload, sendspace, friends who do have websites, and a whole bunch of other ways. Hell even google docs.
27th-Jun-2009 01:11 pm - Due South, Supernatural, and X-Men recs
Due South

Anima by J S Cavalcante (Fraser/RayK) This was a good long story and I loved Ray's pov and the case.

Supernatural

Apocalypse: Cancelled by jeyhawk_fic (Jared/Jensen) This was interesting. I liked the premise and the sex was hot.

X- Men

No Business like Show Business by [info - personal]ponderosa (Victor/Logan/Remy) This was hot and kind of wrong. But very hot.

24th-Jun-2009 10:58 pm - Transformers
Okay the movie was good. :) I liked the action, the special effects and yes there are probably a few plot holes but I really liked the movie. So I don't get why the critics hated it. The movie had everything I expected. Lots of action, some funny parts, and the story made sense.

No, it was not as good as Star Trek but it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges. I thought this movie was about as good as the first Transformers.

And it's late so I'm getting to bed.
23rd-Jun-2009 09:49 pm - Terminator, Supernatural, Stargate Atlantis, and Star Trek Recs
Stargate Atlantis

Trick of the Light by [info - personal]bluflamingo (O'Neill/Sheppard/Jackson) This was kind of weird and disturbing but intense and I couldn't stop reading once I started.

Supernatural

I Carry the Suitcase of My Grief in Both Hands, Ma by withdiamonds (Sam/Dean) I liked the character voices and I felt pretty bad for Sam. :(

Gegenschein by leonidasden (Sam/Dean) This was sweet.

Terminator Salvation

No Fate by hollycomb (Wright/Kyle) This was hot and I loved the character voices.

Star Trek

Five Times James T. Kirk Didn't Get Married (And One Time He Did) by raphaela667 I liked each of the stories. :)

In other news, Rottentomatoes is saying Transformers Revenge of the Fallen sucks (okay I think it's at 22%...)

I already have tickets for tomorrow night so I'll just have to wait and see. I tend to like Michael Bay movies (Armageddon being one of my favorite and Pearl Harbor)

But it's starting to look like out of the four movies I most anticipated this summer Star Trek is going to be the best of them. Terminator Salvation while entertaining did not entice me back into the theaters, X-Men drove me away after I saw the leaked version, and Transformers isn't really hitting it off with the critics. I've seen Star Trek twice already because I really enjoyed the movie.

Here are the rottentomatoes ratings

Star Trek 95%
Terminator Salvation 33%
Transformers 23%
X-Men Wolverine 37%

Guys! this makes no fucking sense! these movies had the money, the talent! and except for Star Trek they all kind of bombed rating wise. JJ Abrams if I remember correctly mostly directed tv right??? I don't get why the other directors who I assume have had some previous experience directing a movie could not make a good movie? Who wrote the scripts and approved them? I really wanted these movies to be awesome and kick ass (like Star Trek did) and instead they produced crap. I'm still holding out hope that I'll enjoy Transformers hell I'd probably go see it if it had a 8% rating. I think Underworld 2 had a 12% and we still went and saw that. I LOVE action movies it's just sad that the ones that should be good (talent and money not being an issue) turn out bad.

Thankfully, other movies (Up, Hangover) have come along that made up for an otherwise crappy quality of summer movies.

Um I also have the sniffles. okay that's it's for now. :)

Palace of the Brine by memphis86 (Jared/Jensen) I had fun reading this story!

20th-Jun-2009 01:11 pm - Sick again (or maybe it's allergies)
I have a runny nose and sore throat...but on the bright side I'm reading this really good Star Trek story that I'll probably recommend later tonight and in 5 minutes I'm heading out to the movies to see the Proposal. We were going to see it last night but by the time we got to the movies it was packed and we couldn't find seats we wanted. So instead we came home, I played around with trying to get something not Zune software to work with my zune and then finished watching Eagle Eye.

Now about Zune. I have a Zune player (I love the device) but I HATE the software. I can't recommend this device to anyone because the software is so limiting and you can't sync music to the device using another media manager. There was a way with software version 2.3-2.5 but then Microsoft fucked us over again and changed something that made zalternator not work. :(

Basically, my biggest issue with the Zune software is that I can't save my playlists and move them to other computers, my playlists duplicate, I can't drag and drop music from a folder into a playlist. It's just a big fucking mess. Which is funny because I used Windows Media Player for years without problems. I just don't get with all their money they can't even beat winamp in terms of features and usability! I'm going to keep an eye open for future hacks because really my Zune device wants to use winamp.

To cheer myself up I think I'll add more stories to the ebook library after I get back from the movies as well as continue to apply for more jobs. I've also made a 3rd skin which is very similar to the one I announced last week except this one has all the recent stories on the column sidebar.
17th-Jun-2009 11:31 pm - Star Trek and Supernatural Recs

Star Ten Sessions by dira (Gen) I loved the character voices and this was a good friendship story.

The Old Gentaran Boy's Club by scribblinlenore (Kirk/Spock) This was hot!

14th-Jun-2009 11:14 pm - Ebook Library Update
This weekend I added another 12 stories mostly Supernatural Big Bang fics and I think two Star Trek stories.

I've also spent a lot of time creating a new skin for the site. It's titled ebookarchive2. I know not very original...I've tested it on Firefox and on 15 inch monitor as well as a 22 inch monitor it looks good there.

For some reason, it's not working so well on IE7 and older versions, but someone did let me know from IE8 and up it displays properly. Unless someone knows css better than me...it looks like it may be like that for awhile because I can't figure out why it's mis-aligning on IE7.

The new skin is open to constructive criticism and suggestions. It's been a year since I've worked on another layout but I liked the idea of having the featured stories and random story easily seen. Before people would have to scroll down a lot to see them. However, for the recent story list..some scrolling is involved too.
