PSA: trojan infection 25 Feb 09 @ 19:02

Totally stolen from [info]acari, word for word. Quoting[info]chopchica:
I've downloaded from megaupload a billion times and never had a problem but yesterday, I immediately ended up with the Virtumonde/Vundo trojan horse on my computer and I am *totally fucked*. From what I can see out there, a new extremely virulent version appeared yesterday. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DOWNLOADING *ANYTHING* right now, but *especially* from megaupload! If you think you have it, turn off your internet access (*all* of it) *immediately*, because goes to the web and downloads new malware to your computer for fun.
And if anyone has ideas how to get rid of it, could you help out [info]chopchica here?

[info]ileliberte said:
I had a Vundo trojan infection recently and the best program to deal with is Malwarebytes. go to malwarebytes.org and you can download the basic program for free. Quick scan usually gets rid of it all but run a complete one just to check up afterwards. It can run on usual startup mode, but if you want to be extra careful, run it on safe mode and it'll get rid of the trojan. Symantec unfortunately doesn't really recognize this virus. Also, beware of windows popping up that look exactly like My computer windows, be sure you don't mistakenly click anything there before you see the url.

Wordpress help needed.

(I seem to have forgotten my web savvy, huh)

When you have a bunch of links in the links manager, and you want to display them in the sidebar, it's easy. But what if you want to make a links page? How do you go about creating a Page (I know how to do that on its own) and then making it FILL UP with the links from the links manager? Anyone knows?

MY BOYS, LEMME PIMP YOU THEM. 09 Nov 07 @ 23:24

Re: that radio thing.

Ces: notice we haven't heard Dom in a while. that's because his mouth is busy :D
ana: I WAS TYPING THIS!
ana: "Bet Dom's under the table at this point.."

I said that, but immediately after I imagined the opposite kinda, above the table not below: picturing an orgy proper, Dom prompting Pam to hop on the table all lengthwise - pushing her little mike stand upwards so it's still near her mouth! Disentangling her headphones' cord! - and spreading her legs and bending to mouth her belly, fingers on her inner thighs pushing them apart for Elijah to get a good view while he tries frantically to line up his next tracks... Later, Elijah's slippery fingers chasing the index cards on which he wrote his cues and the tracks' details, and Pam coming to the rescue between two panting sighs off mike, and Dom popping his vertebrae with a satisfied smirk, rocking on the balls of his feet, one hand still tangled in the hair at the back of Lij's neck, where the skin's hot and sweating, where it's nice to hold him because it makes him easier to steer.

(later)

ana: God, DOM'S VOICE. STILL. ALWAYS.
Ces: heeeee.
ana: srsly. so smooth low sexy mmmm.
Ces: yis, especially like that, when he's all relaxed and it's SUPER low. it just sounds like a continuous purr turned into words.

(rehashing the moment Ces described in her post, that low raspy "Moooonaaagghaaaaaan" bit)

Ces: Dom totally leaned over and put his tongue in Elijah's ear while Elijah was saying that.

ana: *pictures happily* ... *and more*

mission fucking creep 21 Sep 07 @ 13:03

A friend sent me a link to this article this morning.

It's about this new kind of weapon that silently projects some kind of rays, which tune an entire body to PAIN so that you have to run away to put yourself out of its reach (supposedly to disperse belligerent crowds etc.), without leaving any marks or "actually" damaging the body.* It takes 5 minutes to read. You can come back after.

I've read about that earlier - I'd say probably a year ago, and probably through BoingBoing, like so often. It's so horrifying to think about that, as usual, I repressed. Apart from the way I vote and the way I spend my charity money, if I don't want to become an activist (and I am no activist material), there's little reason for me to suffer from detailed knowledge of the ways we're horrible people to each other, and the way the world is descending into madness that seems previously unknown.

But something made me laugh bitterly in this article. Precisely, this passage.
Perhaps the most alarming prospect is that such machines would make efficient torture instruments.
They are quick, clean, cheap, easy to use and, most importantly, leave no marks. What would happen if they fell into the hands of unscrupulous nations where torture is not unknown?

Emphasis totally mine.

I jsut spent a month reading declassified CIA literature and translating some of it for a (French) book about the history of the CIA and the various "scandals" it either created or simply took part in.
I've mostly avoided the news of the workd for the past ten eyars and even I *know* - not suppose, not guess, but have trustworthy sources for information that - the US have tortured, will torture, in the course of their Holy Stupid War on Terror.
This passage need not speculate about other, wilder or more primitive countries, whatever primitive may mean.
I don't even have a doubt that my country would use this for torture, either. When you come down to it., is there really such a thing as a scrupulous country? Really seriously? I'm not so sure.

Call me cynic.

*The things we've convinced ourselves from that stem from the dichotomy between Body and Spirit are countless, frightful and so, so fucking crazily dangerous. It's just--unthinkable.

Also, also, also, is the billing address on the bill the right one? Does that mean if I send you something there you will get it? Because you rather disappeared, love, and I miss you! And not just me!

SG1 S8 14 Aug 07 @ 21:49

806: Avatar: Daniel and Teal'c CUTE and HOT*. (It HAD to be Daniel going. He's the one with the Hope and the Brain. <3) - That was all about A Little Help With My Friends, mm? I liked that. And the whole VR Mexican Standoff thing was great.

807: TEAL'C SHIRT in the opening is MADE OF AWESOME. As was his retro 70s shirt in the end of S7, the ep where they all meet up at Jack's. Also I kinda like Pete. That is all.

* Daniel is starting to be too bulky for me in these eps. There's built, and there's hot, and there's omg I pumped up too much iron for my good. Still wanna mash him w. Rodney though.

(aka 'Heroes') SG13 so CUTE. Adam Baldwin! Their red-headed doctor!

Also, I never said it yet, but I love Walter, too.

And goody, Sam is really really pretty. :-)

(If anyone cares about a reading list for SGA fic, I made a long entry fulla links on LJ that I did not think to crosspost at the time. And before that, there was another long linky entry, but not about fandomy stuff.)

I just finally met Major Lorne (woohoo Lorne!), which means I'm a few eps after the one where spoilers for sg1 s7 )I can now, or soon, start on [info]synedochic's JD fic, beyond simply inhaling the porn paragraphs.

Man, Daniel can squint, can he. *impressed*

You guys don't realize, I think (and this is probably a good thing or you wouldn't be able to stop giving me slanted looks and muttering "freak" under your breath) how much I enjoy the sheer repetition of things I love.

I just-- took the long way around, not even to rec those (though it counts as a rec, but I believe I've done this before), but just to say: sometimes I'm having a bad day, a headache, I'm useless, lonely, stupid, I can't make myself do anything going forward - sometimes the weekend's really not great. But listening to those is enough to bring me out of it and make me grin, whatever the day or the weather or how badly late I am on work.

Michael Shanks is pretty. And the more pretty he is - the more ascended, glasses-less, soothingly calmly gorgeous, or alternately bickering-with-jack funny gorgeous - and the bluer his eyes and the softer his mouth, the more I yearn for really good, possibly long and plotty but also please oh please filled with resentful-sex, slightly angry-sex or maybe complicit-geeks-against-the-military-jocks-sex between DANIEL AND RODNEY.

I know, it is not an obvious pairing. I know, they're both married to their military boyfriends. I know, I know, soft sciences and anthropology etcetc.

AND YET.

THINK OF THE BLUE-EYEDNESS, THE MOUTH-SOFTNESS, THE GORGEOUS-ASSNESS SCIFI-NERDALICIOUS PORNOGRAPHY.

Yes. If it was a grubby man with his cock in his hand and he'd posted that drawing, I would personally still support it in the name of freedom of expression.

(Not that I defended ponderosa before - I only said I don't feel comfortable on LJ anymore, which isn't a new thing; I've been saying it a while.)

wanky thoughts and diatribe - proceed with caution )

*[That Othering process is the danger. The Othering process is the one which allows somehow enough disconnection between people that things end in hurt and stuff. Fandom is the exact opposite of this, imo. It's same-ing, not othering. That's where its strength lies.]

-- end repost. I though reposting would be better than suddenly exposing people who commented while the whole thing was under lock. Not that anything was wanky or risky or whatnot, but I did not think it was really my call to make either.

Okay, so now linking something on LJ can get you suspended, apparently. 09 Aug 07 @ 21:21

Ces: jesus, they suck.
anatsuno: That's just.... so contradictory with every way in which the clever people have always recognized the web works that it is rather frightening.
Ces: yes
anatsuno: srsly. now i worry for their sheer sanity! O.o

See, earlier [info]crazybutsound linked to this analogy thread, which made me smile. I've been more vocal about my leaving LJ and not feeling safe than I have about "the other side", but I'm not a houri nor a harpy, and I *understand* some - some, I don't claim I get the real big picture there exactly, though I'm not sure anyone really can claim that at all - of LJ/6A's issues, possible reasoning, their possible reasons. I'm not completely narrow-mindedly offended, and I can read synecdochic's LJ as much as anyone, as well as trade news, politcal news, all these things. I'm not a complte stranger to the (stupidly paranoid) conservative climate in the US

I understand that pro-ana comms are not illegal and "what legally might count in the US as child pornography" well, is more iffy. I understand, even, that it was poorly worded stuff that sent everybody into orbit about the pro-ana comms being possibly positive places where girls or boys can help each other - I can even admit this, though I would retort then right away that the same is true for us Snarry and Malfoycest shippers - support, help, immensely necessary understanding and affection are also the things we find in each other in our porn positive, chan positive, fiction positive places (and I will be reposting publically a flocked-post I made last week, because I want to say precisely that over and over again). (And also this).

I told [info]cimorene111 in her link-post how I don't have to agree with LJ's way of stepping away from the dangerous issues instead of, yes, into them. She says that's asking a lot of a corporation, and I recognize that. It's not asking too much of a community, though, and that's the way I always thought of LJ, even though it was / is / will stay a corporation.

It's because I cannot think of it as a comminuty anymore, now, that I will have to leave. Because my 'user-generated content' is not FOR them, it is for me, from me to you.
(Anyone else hear the Beatles song when they read that? I can hear it as I write)

Anyway, all this to say: the whole linking can get you suspended thing? Is a complete, utter, total fucking aberration. It is so crazy, so anti-web, so mind-bloggingly stupid, that I am, for the first time in all this, really, really wondering who the hell are these people and what they've done with Livejournal. Anil Dash can get on board such a policy, REALLY? Well picture me gobsmacked. Next you'll tell me Cory Doctorow wants to help extend copyright to a life+100 years... Wait, no, don't EVER tell me, even if it becomes true someday.

...And in other, no more cheery news (read: RAGE AND SADNESS MAKING), everyone saw this and that, right? Americans have work to do. Get to those phone and postcards and whatnot, will you?

No, I did not cut this.

sg1 s6 spoilers )

On a fanfic note, I am rediscovering how fucking much I like good gen. I decided I'd watched enough SG1 to start in the fun crossovers and I read all of the Retrograde 'verse over the weekend. Man, what a fucking DELIGHT it all is, IC characters, fun and adventure and banter and whoa, yes, please please more. I loved it - probably silly to rec it after so long, I'm behind the entire fandom on this one, but hey. If you haven't and good gen is your type of thing, read it.

(Those who're hunkering for good slash can also inhale the Hunting Party 'verse, in which john has interesting alien encounters. I love it, too, and rec it wholeheartedly despite it not being otp (omg!!1), but I'd read it a while back, so it's not tasting of new and discovery to me like Retrograde was/is).

Two other links, because I am procrastinating my thesis commentary like WHOA, which is bad for me but good for my fanfic folder...

If you don't have anything against crossovers, RUN-not-walk to [info]seperis's And All the World Beneath, a brilliant, brilliant SPN/SGA/+ crossover that kept me riveted throughout til I'd sucked it dry - or maybe til it had sucked me dry. I'm kind of still reeling from inhaling it too fast, I think. Adventure! Creepiness! Dean! John! Teyla! Awesomeness all around!

Then there's SGA Big Bang, finally live yay! (Can you tell how I am so not about to start this commentary thesis thing? You guys just gave me HOURS MORE READING TO PROCRASTINATE WITH!). LONG FIC FTW. And Fanart! Vids and Such!

I am a little too over excited, perhaps. I shall go watch something and ponder thesis, the dreariness of it will surely calm me down. :-)

I managed to spend the entire weekend not touching the thesis, in bursts of angsty procrastination. Way to go, me!
I also managed to drive myself crazy about my project website, for no good reason at all except that I want it DONE ALREADY but it takes skills I don't have. Anyone has a good AJAX coder in their pockets?

vague wanky stuff )

I don't want to go to work! I want to stay home and knit and make this stupid @#$!@#$ website and wrangle the thesis (no, I don't want to wrangle the thesis, but I need to. And the KB at work is horrendous so I'm never going to be typing loads of commentary over there even if the august workload is smaller. wah.

Tomorrow, for the very first time, I'm going to a Lush store. I *know* I want the little Japanese Girl thing, wot I forgot the name of but it's okay because it's called something different anyway. But this is all I know.

You guys have 20 hours, about, to tell me what else I should get - what soap or shower gel if any, what deo-thing if any, what shampoo or haircare thing if any. I have a mixed, medium skin, and mixed, medium hair - itchy to flaky scalp, sadly, and I'd love to get away from silicon-heavy and SLS-laden products. I require moisturising lotion for body and hands, because my skin tends to dry out...

I'm sure you know what I should get, you lush-crazies, yes? *begs for tips*

Clarifications 25 Aug 05 @ 16:03

In bullet points, because it's my birthday (oooh, splooge for my birthday, yaye! *g*) and I want to open the next present soon.

* [info]edgeplay is not a feedback community. I understand the many people seem to use the work 'feedback' as 'reader's response', but the -back in feedback, and the classical use of the word throughout fandom, defines feedback as more precisely and narrowly, 'reader's response directed back at the author of the piece'. [info]edgeplay understands feedback defined as such, and therefore since the comm's existence is to provide a privately run space for reader's response not directed to / concerned with the author, it's not a feedback community. Is that clear?

* 'narcissistic' is an adjective which has, like many others, a primary significance lurking beneath the 'judgment value' many people seem to assign to it nowadays in a systematic way. I happen to be a narcissistic person, in the general way (and socially, severely frowned upon) that the word is mostly used. But if I say 'this thing here interests me in a purely narcissistic way', I am not at that time defining my entire personality with that trait; I very well could not have a generally narcissistic personality and still say so. I am merely defining the quality of my interest.

There is no judgment regarding the good or bad value of that interest in me simply enunciating the fact that something interests me narcissistically. Therefore, the sentence that got commented upon and taken as an insult to writers in the userinfo of [info]edgeplay was not, I hope it's clear now, intended as one. I apologize if I was not clear enough about it-- no offense meant, at all, by the use of the word... I was focusing on its precise meaning and not the insulting connotations. Let's have a closer look at it and in context again:

If a writer requests to join and is accepted, as stated above, I will take it as their expressed agreement to the community's goals for readers' discussion, and as an expression of their desire to discuss, as readers themselves, other players' fiction. If you join out of pure narcissistic need to see what's in there about you, you forfeit the right to take the high horse when you kick a big fuss about it later. [emphasis added here]

In the midst of a bunch of paragraphs, all aiming to explain the purpose and rules of the community (once again, all together now: READERS' RESPONSE DISCUSSION and not FEEDBACK TO AUTHORS), these words, 'out of pure narcissistic need', are not there to put down the existence of that need within writers. I am possessed of my own version of that narcissistic urge, I share the unending curiosity for readers' reactions to my work that many writers and players are blessed/cursed with, I thrive on feedback AND discussion of it both.

I know I would want to join a community like [info]edgeplay out of that need alone. The userinfo is there to warn writers that they will be expected to be active as readers who discuss if they join the community, that they have to be able to shed their writer suit and dress up in their reader outfit-- AND that if it's only their need to see what's said about them which brings them in, they are taking the risk to see their feelings get hurt, because... see parenthesis in capitals again, all together now, chorus.

* Writers will be able to respond *as writers* to the reviews and commentary made of their work - the userinfo says so, too. It's only that I am taking pains to establish a newborn space and as such, I am trying hard to define clear boundaries, clear goals, and clear expectations - it strikes me as a better thing to do that upstream than having people rush in and get surprised. How else can I define what the space is for? Everything needs a framework.

I hope I clarified a few things.

More about the splooge later, but these things seemed the more important for me to address in my capacity as mod of this new community. The rest if I ever write it and post it will be my personal take on different topics.

Mood: cake!

aaaand... Action! 24 Aug 05 @ 23:16

I have been sitting on the idea and pondering it for over 6 months now, and various things (among which new posts and discussions springing up in metafandom on lj as the exact same issue tormented the SGA fandom) made me finally jump the shark.

I'm concerned (mostly annoyed) with our collective tendency to 'say nothing if we have nothing nice to say'. While it's perfectly all right if an individual adopts this policy for him/herself, with the subjectivity issue on top and people's understandable reluctance to take a risk with a comment from fear of getting trampled by an upset writer in return, it seems to me (SO not a new observation) that on a wider scale this habit stifles a good part of the potential discourse that readers have brewing within them.

As a reader, I find it difficult to know where and when and to whom I can offer my entire opinion, thoughtful criticism and/or twisty-gut-punch included-- I do not mean insults, which can't ever be, by nature, 'appropriate', though what defines an insult is also a subjective set of criteria. I came to fandom because I like commenting and discussing my fannish objects... This mindset carries through to the things I read and consume inside fandom, too.

So, I'd like to announce the creation of [info]edgeplay, a community designed for in-depth discussion of Establishment logs / arcs / characters, as well as fiction related to the game, such as future fic or backstory fic.

This is a personal initiative and not an official Establishment anything.

By in-depth discussion I mean taking logs and talking about our feelings/reactions/opinions about them, as readers. I mean readers posting reviews and discussing amongst themselves.

It isn't a concrit community as such: its intended audience and participating membership is not est-members in their 'writer suit', but in their capacity as thoughtful readers, along with other readers who don't write in the game. While it might be helpful to the writers to see what people have to say about their logs/fic (a great side effect if it happens, and I do wish for it), I'm concerned with examining and sharing our own reactions to all the compelling writing that's going on in the game's universe.

please do read more :) )

I really hope you give it a try.

Mood: interested

Re: those comments.

Obviously it is quite difficult for you to understand that I expect rules to be respected, and will enforce them as I see fit, in my own territory.

It would have been easy for you to email one of the D_LA mods and ask politely if it was okay to post to this thread - you could even have expounded upon how you think it's a cause for rejoicing when the 'two sides of the fence' fall in agreement about something. You didn't choose to do that, and you're insulting me on top? What, do you think THIS is an attitude that is more likely to get me not to screen your posts?

I don't care what you think of me, my eventual courage or lack thereof, and even the way you misunderstand what interests / motivates me makes me laugh, because guess what: eveything you do regarding this crazy tinhat thing makes me laugh (with the notable exception of you following me and other people around at C4, because that creeped me out instead).

I'm posting this here because I respect the space created at DL_A and its rules, and I do NOT want to be feeding the troll over there. As I said, everything you post there will be screened-- I'm going over there to do that just now. Feel free to keep insulting me in here, however-- a flamewar in my journal is just what I need to bust my gut laughing today. :)
