Another $0.11 on the topic of the hour.
No, I wasn't the one who deleted F_W. But only because I couldn't decide how long to leave it deleted for maximum funny. And I bet nobody would have suspected me, because I was the Lurking Mod.

Dude, seriously. The very fact that F_W is now being referred to as some kind of significant fannish institution is reason enough to delete it, never mind the asshats and the people bitching about the asshats. Because the whole point of creating F_W in the first place was to point and laugh at people who TAKE STUPID FANDOM SHIT TOO FUCKING SERIOUSLY.

On the plus side, however, there's a weird kind of symmetry to the fact that a little over a year ago, we had site admins terminating F_W with extreme prejudice, and now we have site admins forcefully resurrecting it.

Thank you, Dara. It's just a fucking online community, not the United Nations, and the whole idea of it being a fannish institution goes against every reason it came into existence in the first place.

Admittedly, my primary comment on the whole deal was to say "Oh! *stomps foot* That's so wron--- ooh! bran muffins!" (Bran muffins because I'm old, get it?)...

..and I can safely say that the phrase "fannish institution" has never crossed my lips (er, fingertips?), but it boggles me that you think reinstatement was high-handed and arbitrary, but not that the deletion was equally so.

I think you may be dealing with an issue where people running something start to see the asshats and nothing but the asshats, because those are the ones you need to do something about. (It's happened to me running club events, and, as a dramatic public example, it happened to many of the www.televisionwithoutpity.com mods) And then every participant starts to look like an asshat, all complaints are whining and so forth. So you set out to "teach them a lesson", except that you spread the target a little wide and hit a whole bunch of people who *had* been playing nice.

So now you get people like me, who've been quietly following f_w since the lj days, posting the occasional comment and the more occasional wank, who got left out of the super sekrit elite club because we're not vocal enough, and got tarred with the "you're all nothing but whiners and asshats" when you pulled yesterdays stunt. What reaction did you expect?

Maybe that's it. (Jealous 'cause not a kool kid.) But I think it's more about a particular subsegment of f_w becoming what the haters always accused f_w of being. Nobody's "real" fandom_wankers unless you're part of the mods' group, no matter to what degree you've participated and how long you've been around. It only matters which asses you've kissed for admittance to the secret cabal. All non-ass-kissers must be asshats and n00bs. That's all the deletion and reaction has told me. The hive vagina DOES exist.

That's what I've always said f_w was not. Obviously, I was deluded.

I don't think it's about ass-kissing at all. Of course, I also don't feel betrayed by the whole thing because, like I said in my journal, it *is* only an online community.

You know, I wasn't really upset when f_w disappeared, whether it be the action of a pissy mod or l33t cracker, or what not.

The fact that people on my friends list went into some type of gigantic roleplay to INTENTIONALLY INDUCE PANIC AND WANK and pretend that they didn't know what was going on--now that has pissed me off. I don't suffer liars. I really don't suffer those that intentionally plan and induce dirty-handed wank.

I'll admit that I probably wouldn't have found the wank following the deletion AS funny if I hadn't known the comm was coming back.

But here's the thing. Within two hours of the comm being deleted, another one had been created. FW would have gone on even if we hadn't intended to bring it back (which we did, even though there's no way of proving that we did.) And the fact that so many people were *so incredibly outraged* is just, well, astonishing to me. I'd have expected anger, but not the level and the vitriol to which it's been taken by some.

Mind you, I was expecting it to come back overnight.

Because all the other times f_w rose from the ashes it happened at night - and back then, I only had net access during the day, so I always missed it. At least this one happened when I was around to watch.

It's not an institution but it is a community and not some people's place for a power trip.

If fandom_wank sucketh the big fat syphilitic cock, then it will die. No one has the right to kill it because they're on a power trip. Most of the cabal already have their own community-- and it's a locked community.

Whatever. You are the original owner of fandom_wank and I just put it back in your hands. Do with it whatever the fuck you want.

It's not that I necessarily think you're wrong about F_W being a cultural phenomenon. It's just that I think it's pretty ironic for people to take it so damn seriously when the whole point in the first place was to not take things so seriously. And I'm not just talking about you, I'm talking about pretty much everybody involved (except maybe [info]phosfate, who never seems to let the bullshit get her down). Everybody (including members, mods, and myself) who got bent out of shape over the deletion or the trolls or the general stupidity just needs to turn the freaking computer off and go outside for a while.

It's only a snark community. It's only fandom. It's only the internet, ferChristsakes.

If I deleted F_W forever (which I never really planned on doing), so what? Somebody else would create it anew and life would go on. If anything's culturally phenomenal about F_W, it's that aspect: that whatever happens, you can't stop the mocking. It's not just a community, a collection of pixels and SQL code, IT'S FREEDOM!!!1!!!

Anyway, if I come off as snarky in this comment, it's not aimed at you. I'm not really pissed about the resurrecting of F_W, I just think it's all a bunch of silliness.

Yeah, I ended up going outside later, too. There was a haze layer over the valley which made the mountains look fabulous.
