I watched The Dark Knight! I know I said I wouldn't, but the Star Wars cartoon already dropped from the cinema and it was already too late for Kung Fu Panda today, so I had to.

I don't think I really still need to spoiler-cut The Dark Knight, yes? )

So, at least the weird line on/under my thumbnail is nothing troublesome. It's some scarring-over inflammation (my translation from medicine-speak to german, then german to english anyway), but nothing vicious or fungal or anything.

Yay for harmlessness, but on the downside it's not going to go away on it's own and you can't reach it to make it go away. Oh well. I mean, it's just a line on my nail, but still. There goes my glamorous hand model career. :|

Hey, did you know my camera has a pictures-with-extremely-cheesy frames mode*? I didn't, I always thought it was a back-button or something like this. Why I assumed my camera has heart-shaped back-buttons I do not know. Probably just because it was the last of the mode buttons.

*A modern camera would have a cat macro mode instead.

It is really getting weird, every time I look into a german newspaper, namely "Der Spiegel", I stumble over these lines that [President Bush/Mr. Obama/the Nato/some US General/some US big name politician or elder statesman] didn't say that that [he/it/they] expect [the Europeans and that means Germany too/the Europeans but especially the Germans/the Germans] to get more involved in Afghanistan and by that they mean [fighting and war/blood, sweat and tears/pain and suffering] instead of the worthless [paying for stuff/peacekeeping shit/rebuilding shit] we are doing right now, but they totally think it and expect it and there is no way how we can refuse to comply with these unexpressed demands after [the American election/the next german election/the time has come] and we better [prepare to face the inevitable/get that into our heads and roll with it/order more body bags while the price is low].

Where do these journalists get their deep insights about the things people never say but somehow mean and why do they never explain why saying [no/yes and no/yes, but.../anything but yes] just isn't possible?

And why can't I have a direct link into all American big name brainspace and the results of future political developments and negotiations too?

Are American newspapers full of US politicians and military wordlessly obsessing about Germany as well? So many questions.

Well, that Michaela Ecks. I've been warned about her in time by trustworthy people*, so I limited my interactions with her to the odd crazy-repellent "hi" and didn't have to experience any of her batshit-grudgy behavior first hand. But I heard, you know, lots of stories. And I got a good bad impression from her fabulous [info]bad_penny Investigative Flounce too.

So, I'm more than willing to believe the weirdest shit about her, but you know, the bit where her grudgebot wiki is a money making project and her trolling of Fanthrophology and the dropping of real names is part of an elaborate scheme to up it's Google-ranking for a pending sale to the enemy of all right-thinking fandom, FanLib? Uh, hu.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good theory, but I'm missing the part where she plans to use the financial godsend from FanLib to build a weather machine for the purpose of blackmailing the United Kingdom.

*And thank you for that, whoever it was. :)

Re this post, I left the things well enough alone until today when I asked my morning boss what they are.
He was like "No idea." and hit one with his hammer/axe thingy.

Good to know at least one of us lives in perfect harmony with his inner Homer Simpson.

Yesterday, this heron chilled in the pond where I made my first batch of dragonfly pics (and the froggie ones, if you remember). This is more hilarious if you know that it's standard garden pool size and frequented by lots of people, often with dogs. The Neckar herons know they are supposed to be rare and shy creatures, they just don't give a shit.

11:00 pm - There is one thing that is cuter than baby sheep and that is baby sheep on a steep hill
So, now that I have a basic idea how my camera works, I visited the sheep again and it was worth it. For once, when I take pictures not at noon on a hot day, I can actually see things on the display. And the sheep are more lively when it's colder too. Plus, today they were grassing on the side of a hill and it was fun watching their attempts at maneuvering the slope. :D

Downhill baby sheep.
And if Youtube were less of a failure, this would be three videos by now, and in better quality too. Oh well. I will add more later, but I need to sleep so badly.
ETA: Uphill/downhill baby sheep. Way better.

ETA2: Yet another baby sheep on hill. Less exciting but steadier camera.

ETA3: Two more short clips. Baby sheep does not approve of this noise and Baby sheep short run.

I went back to the pond today because I had the theory that maybe, if I use the "sports" camera mode and when a dragonfly flies at me instead of from left to right or vice versa, I might be able to get a clear picture.

Well, I was wrong. Not for lack of opportunities, mind. Either the camera is not up for the task, or I'm not or I have a lot to learn. Like, for example, not to panic if a huge dragonfly flies directly at me. Because flailing and making photos just doesn't mix.

And just when I was done making pictures, I got my stupid vision-impairing pseudo-migraine and while I was very cautiously cycling through the forest, waiting for my eyesight to restore itself, the weather got bad in no time and there was a thunderstorm and it rained like mad and I ended up sitting in an pagoda-style open hut in the forest with a bunch of other shelter-seeking strangers. Kind of like in Kurosawa's Rashomon. Only that no one told ghastly or edifying tales, they just complained that it was raining and made jokes about calling a cab. And ate pistachios or something like that, very loudly so. Me, I don't know how you can drown out the noise of a rainstorm in the open with pistachio-eating, but today I met a couple who knew!

In that connection - not the pistachios, the migraine stuff - rant time: a big retroactive FUCK YOU to everyone who ever was like "You wouldn't have backache/pseudo-migraine/whatever ailment if you would only go outside more/do more sports/sleep early and regularly/insert platitude here" at me in the past.

Because now that I'm doing all those wonderful and beneficial things, I can't help noticing that my back just aches a little bit more for it and my pseudo-migraines? They hit me with the very same frequency they always had and don't give a shit about my lifestyle, no Sir.

Now, I don't regret that I'm going outside again and do stuff now, because it's fun and exciting and shiny. But you know, the part where you made me feel guilty over and above feeling miserable? Not forgiving that.[/rant]

So, where was I? Ah yes, here are the few pictures that worked.

Today I steered my bike in a different direction and ended up at another pool with lots and lots and lots of dragonflies! Fortunately for you, it was nearly impossible to photograph them because they were all busy fighting each other and had no time for sitting around and looking pretty. Or when they did, it would only take seconds for another one to locate and dive-bomb them.

Anyway, they left the really tiny ones alone and one of the six big blue-ish ones was really fed up with the whole pond brawl and kept sitting down to catch some breath, if only for a few seconds. So when I noticed that she would always sit down in the same place, I got my pictures in the end! \o/

Not of the biggest and most crazy-ass orange dragonfly ever though, because when you are the biggest dragonfly on the pond you must dive-bomb ALL the others all the time and you can never sit down. Obviously. But I got one blurry chance-pic of her when she charged my dragonfly model:

Here be more crazy dragonflies. Fifteen pictures. )

Also, I uploaded a new video of Dignity!cat. It's very boring, she just sits there and sometimes moves her head a bit or an ear or maybe she has a hint of an facial expression. On the plus side, not shaky at all! Probably just interesting when you are a big Dignity!cat fan.
If you can guess the movie in the background you're good.

09:13 pm - The Bank Job and In Bruges
Okay, I knew it was a mistake to wait with writing about BankJob until after I watched In Bruges, and I was right because now I don't give a shit anymore. But I'll try to remember what I was thinking, just because my opinion on movies is this important for you, or it should be.

So, The Bank Job. Overall it's kinda shabby. It's a good movie, but it won't make a difference if you watch it on the big screen or on a TV.Some spoilers )

In Bruges. I think it's safe to say I found my favorite movie for 2008! I wouldn't put it on my "Shit with guns 'n cussin'" list though. While it has all the requirements, they don't play a big enough role in the movie to make the list. Well, above that, I'm kinda speechless. All the characters are lovely, all the character interaction is great, the mix of tranquility and scurrility and depth and silliness and sadness and violence and whatever else a good movie needs is perfect, and everything that happens happens for a reason. Watch it.

HOWEVER! As much as I enjoyed everything else I would immediately trade it in for 107 minutes of watching Chloe's facial expressions. ♥ ♥ ♥ I was kind of surprised to learn who that was when the credits rolled in. Seems like today I became a Clémence Poésy fan. O_o

09:34 pm - Is this a genre? Does it have a name?
I don't know, there are some movies that really really do it for me, and I'm can't even say exactly what they have in common that, you know, does it.

I would say they need to be somewhat dated but then Eastern Promises wouldn't count. Or I would say they are always about crime gangs, but then The Untouchables wouldn't count. The only constants I can think of is that the bullets make bigger holes into people than usual, and that there are one or more really competent, ruthless fellows who seem to have figured out the rules to live by in a world of crime. And most of them will die messily. Which might or might not prove the bit about the 'figured out the rules' wrong. Also, there's often hopelessly fucked up characters who only get by by being too fucked up to worry about the rules, or even the consequences of their actions.* Often, they are the reason why the competent guys go down.

Okay, let's see: Eastern Promises, The Untouchables, Heat, Leon the Professional, Killing Zoe, Brother (Takeshi Kitano's) and there's probably another six that should be on the list but I can't think of them right now. But here's one that I had completely forgotten about and I shouldn't have: State of Grace.
*flails* *flails* *flails*
This is a bit silly because I can't even stand the face of Sean Penn. Why couldn't they hire Andy Garcia or something? Someone I like? But still.
*flails*

*Sometimes, they aren't played by Gary Oldman.

I guess when you're so bad at paying attention to things that you don't notice how - instead of your projected strawberry sherbet rooibos tea - you've been drinking brewed-overly-long, detestably bitter black tea all day, you're not in a good position to complain, yes?

Because otherwise I would like to bemoan feeling jumpy and shaky and belly-achy and being in for some really fucked-up nightmares if I manage to go to sleep at all.
