Like I said in my last entry, I'm going to be taking on another spork project. The target: Voice of the Earth: Land of Fire and Stone 2 by Arcole. This is the sequel to a fic called (guess what) Land of Fire and Stone; this one's also bad, but not quite as much as its sequel. All you need to know about the first fic is that it's set 7 years post-comet, Zuko and Toph end up married and everyone has babies. Sokka and Suki have a daughter named Zutara. No, I'm not kidding. I may spork the first fic once I'm done with this one, but the sequel gets top priority in my sporking docket.
This is one of those sneaky badfics: the writing's pretty good. So good, in fact, that I actually enjoyed reading the first fic. Well, I enjoyed it up to a point. Then I started seeing things that just didn't sit right with me-- namely, the story's treatment of the inhabitants of the Tropical Paradise⢠island. Then some weird crap started popping up with Toph and Zuko and pretty soon it all went downhill.
But the sequel... Oh boy. It's chock full of sexist tropes, pointless melodrama that turns the Avatarverse into one big soap opera, and Jet becomes the king of Omashu. No, I'm not kidding. Given this author's Jet-worship, I think we're just lucky she didn't give him Kuei's job! She also appears to have a huge hurt/comfort fetish, because the four main characters (Zuko, Toph, Mai, and Jet) spend most of the fic either deathly ill/horrifically injured or recovering from their ailments. Again, not even kidding. These four are almost constantly at Death's door in this fic. It's absurd.
I'll be doing this spork in summary/script format because there's just too much of it for the line-by-line format that I used on "Destiny of the Avatar". This author's almost as long-winded as I am!

Oh my. :O
Yeah, I hate the downhill-from-here fics - the ones that start out promising and then become a roller coaster ride into dreckland.
I remember years ago reading a story somewhere involving (mumblemumble) ... well, let's just say it was RPS. Anyway, the story started out OK, but became a very tiring series of lurching from crisis to crisis with never a moment for the characters to just ENJOY themselves.
I quit reading the story. For all I know the author has kept adding to it with more crisis moments since then.
Stealth badfics are even more annoying than out-and-out badfic like "Destiny of the Avatar". Not only do they trick you into getting invested in the story, but they also tend to be way more popular than they deserve (see also: that Neville-Stu badfic being sporked on the HMS).
