If it helps, my degree is in a field with limited commercial application. I'm, for all intents and purposes, a nuclear physicist (long story short: People with chemistry degrees can take enough courses to hum a few bars and fake the rest. ;) ), and since a lot of the work here is government-funded, they like it when you have a doctorate.

But heaven help me, sometimes I feel like metaphorically chucking the table over and just saying "fuck it", and wait for a job as an accelerator operator.

So yeah, sometimes I chant to myself, "Doctorate, wasted university education, thousands of student loan debt".

Other times I actually *like* doing this stuff. Science is in some ways a process of discovery: learning things you didn't know about before. And it's a challenging road, granted - but it can be interesting. :)
