Birth of the Firebringer Read-A-Long
Today we're starting our book discussion on Birth of the Firebringer, by Meredith Ann Pierce, and anyone who wants to come hang out and watch or chime in is welcome! If you aren't already a member of the Vale, you're welcome to join, but be extra sure you read through our FAQ before you do.

Guide Post is here

How It Works
Every two weeks, starting December 9, 2007, we'll be reading a chapter (or two) from Meredith Ann Pierce's Birth of the Firebringer novel. On Sunday, every two weeks, one of the Read-A-Long guides will open a new discussion thread and you're free to begin discussing the next chapter! Read the chapter currently open for discussion, and start sharing your thoughts, reactions, opinions... whatever pops into your head. That's all it takes, no extra parts, no batteries needed. :)

The Reading Calendar
A reading calendar for the book has been put together for you to access at any time. You can find a printable PDF version as well as a JPG version here in the Documents Section. They're not necessary to have in order to participate, but they might give you a better grasp of dates and time frames. Hopefully they won't clash with any of your personal activities! In addition, there'll be a list of dates typed up here as well.

Naturally, to make sure everyone has fun, there's got to be a few of these...

Guidelines:
1. The discussion threads will stay open for two weeks.
Nobody will stop you from commenting afterward, of course, but the majority of the readers will have moved on to the next chapter and you may not get any feedback.
2. You can comment as you read. You don't have to finish the chapter first. You can also comment as soon as the thread's open.
3. Play fair, play nice. Allow others to have their opinions. If you disagree with someone, keep it respectful.
4. Stay on topic, stay on the chapter. Please don't jump ahead. Many of us probably aren't reading the book for the first time, but it's just good manners not to run on ahead of everyone else. Do try and stay on topic. Tangents Happen and that's totally fine, but try to keep in mind what the purpose of the thread is and stay close to the subject matter.
5. If you cite a quote or passage directly, please let us know where it is. Page numbers are good, plus tell us what version of the book you have - year of publication, cover illustration, that sort of thing. Same thing goes for if you cite either another Internet or book source - link us to it or tell us where we can find it.
6. Don't be afraid to speak up! This is an open forum and we won't bite. If you saw it differently than someone else, say so! I've read the book many times and I'm still finding new perspectives. I want to hear yours, and I want you to enjoy yourselves!

Again, the Read-A-Long Guide Post is here.

Can't find Birth of the Firebringer in your area? Your bookstore may not stock it, but it's definitely still in print! I'll have some ideas later on about how to get hold of a copy. Remember, the book will probably be in your local store's young adult book section.
