Mummers' Dance? More Fun Than You Think
Geh. I have my f-list bookmarked on my Firefox link bar, but I forgot that I'd been signed in as Tristan for god knows how long, therefore I missed a fuckton of friends-only posts. You haven't been forgotten, my lovelies! I'm just a dumbass. -_-

I've got some odds and ends to report. Thought about posting the year-end meme [info]nightengale posted, but not just yet, since I already posted a meme and I TRY to make it a point not to make two meme-only posts in a row. I fail, but I try.

I discovered that there is one New Years' Day tradition that - as far as I'm concerned - trumps all other traditions.

The Philadelphia Mummers Parade

I watched it on TV on New Years' Day after getting fed up at work and going home about two hours early (my supervisors were not there). Holy crap. Picture what would happen if Mardi Gras mixed with Carneval in Rio de Janeiro mixed with COLLEGE DRUM CORPS.

The following are links to YouTube videos including some interesting String Band bits from older parades, discovered by my brother.

Swashbuckler's Serenade by the Fralinger String Band

Starship Fralinger, also by the Fralinger String Band

And then this from this year's -

Longer clip about the 2007 parade

You can find more if you're interested, they're easy to locate. Next year, Dad and I want to go to Philly for this. Definitely beats taking up space on the couch and eating holiday leftovers! Where else can you see potbellied grown men in sequins and feathers doing a poultry-like dance that they'd never be caught doing any other time of the year?
