Various thoughts on yaoi
I went up to my college campus to learn the route to my classes because, as some of you might not be aware, I am totally blind, and did not want to wander around like an idiot. I am home now, and my feet hurt, and I have a headache.

Also, I do not think that I will ever be a fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover books. I am reading The Bloody Sun> because I was told it is a really good starting place, and I just really want to smack the protagonist until he gets over his emo.

And, despite not generally going for slash, I would so much rather see our male protagonist with one of the men in his life than the woman he has suddenly decided he loves forever and ever. Because the romantic tension was not at all introduced in a smooth and believable manner. Rather, it was like Bradley decided, "Hey, I know what let's do! Let's introduce some completely random out of the blue sexual tension involving a female character who is inevitably described every time she shows up as frail, childlike, vulnerable. Possibly I shouldn't find that at all squicky and yet... I very much do.

I've read all of the Darkover novels. I wouldn't have picked The Bloody Sun as a starting place, but I don't know what I would have picked.

I thought Stormqueen, The Shattered Chain, and The Heritage of Hastur/Sharra's Exile were the most enjoyable of the Darkover novels. I think Bradley may be among the authors that you really need to read when you're about fourteen. Mercedes Lackey also falls into this category.

I'd agree with that assessment...I loved Lackey madly when I was younger, now, not so much. I still reread the old ones occasionally out of nostalgia though. Never did tackle Bradley, though.

I enjoyed The Bloody Sun...but then, I did in fact read it when I was fourteen, and I have not reread it. Heritage of Hastur is the starting place I would have picked, as it rather neatly introduces several compelling main characters whose lives influence many of the books of the series and elaborates on the conflict between Terrans and Darkovans.

Lew Alton and Regis Hastur are both terrifyingly emo, though!

They are, but Regis gets better. And Lewis really has nowhere to go but up from that book. Besides, it's necessary to understand Sharra's Exile.

You know, a statement like that terrifies me. Because the section of The Bloody Sun I read featured Jeff Kerwen being the most emotastic emo that ever emoed. At one point on the bus today I actually muttered, "Oh, shut up, Jeff" right out loud, which I'm sure caused a few raised eyebrows. :P
