Really? REALLY? [Aug. 7th, 2009|09:44 am]

And to think I was so sad that JF was down when the Mammoth Wank of Women Can't Do That broke. I should have known it would be really unfunny.

...and that's why I broke up with Fandom Wank.

It seems like an unlikely place for someone's treatise on how women actually can't do serious things.

Well, this explains a lot.

And by "explains a lot", I mean "made me LOL at the stupidity."

I didn't read past the thing about not being able to make friends with other women.

I HATE women who use that as a fucking badge of pride. I'm a computer programming geek who goes to Cons, plays RPGs, likes video games, hates Star Wars with the embarrassing fervor of a true fan and I AM FRIENDS WITH LOTS OF AWESOME WOMEN WHO ARE EXACTLY LIKE ME. Also? I'm friends with lots of awesome women who are nothing like me.

Any time a woman asserts that they're "not like other women" or don't have anything in common with other women I pretty much write them off as idiotic. Because WHO THE FUCK can generalize roughly 50% of the population of planet motherfucking Earth?

Ahem. And to prove that, after my screeching fit on how much I love SF, I went to the kitchen to make some home made hamburger buns for dinner. \o/

Yes, this, exactly.

Well, except that I'm not a computer programmer (I'm a Canadianist! I'm gonna get business cards!) and my husban dis irritatingly vegetarian so I don't get to eat hamburgers, but yes, this.

Bread! Oh, if it weren't so damned hot, I'd be making my Internationally Famous Butter-dipped buns right now.

Mmmmmmm...

I'm a (gay) male geekzilla, and the large majority of my fandom friends are women. Only way to avoid some of the genderfail, I guess. (Actually, I think the only geek-type close straight male friend I have right now is very anti-homophobic and at least tries to be pro-feminist. And is willing to take lessons on how to avoid genderfail from the three women he lives with and the raging queen he's starting a band with. And probably wouldn't kick Zachary Quinto out of his bed, especially after seeing him as Spock. And has said as much.)

I have lots of friends who are guys, lots who are girls, and they come in a healthy range of sexualities. In my approaching old age (because soon I'll be 30 and therefore over the hill) I have come to the conclusion that some people suck. And some people don't. And that their gender/sexuality has less to do with it then other factors, like their inherent level of self-absorption and their ego.

I could be nutso, but that seems about the level of reckless generalization I'm comfortable with. Anything past "some people are ___" starts to make me twitchy.

My best friend did the "I'm not like other women! I'm SPECIAL!" dance to me a few weeks ago. Broke my heart.

To focus on the absolute wrong part of the post:

It's like when Harry Potter was hyped and everyone was on about how great it was, and if you tried to point them towards some other good series, even Philip Pullman, and they'd be: nah, just the Harry Potter, thanks.

I hate the way people always try to push Pullman to fans of HP. They are nothing alike except for being YA fantasy. Discworld would make much more sense.

I love fantasy and I love Pullman, but I was bored by the Golden Compass. Never made it more than 1/3 of the way in. And I really tried, because growing up his Sally Lockhart books were some of my favorites.

I think that the whole point of HP is that they were insanely accessible. You don't have to work very hard to get to and understand the story, which is exciting and full of good vs evil.

Of course, people who are proud of not belonging do seem to get extra-special thrills from not liking popular things. I absolutely went through that phase in high school and the beginning of college. I think I'm mostly grown out of it though. LOL

I always liked Golden Compass, but I can't even remember what went on in Amber Spyglass. I almost stopped reading when the woman was sitting in a tree messing around with sap and elephants on wheels.

My only memory of AS is being genuinely angry at the book for not living up to its hype. I was promised this awesome book about atheism and god not existing and whatnot, and the book CHEATED ME! Fuck you, book!

(Fuck you and your weirdly creepy scenes between the two kids and their daemons, also, while I'm at it, because ... ew?)

I have not been going into comments much lately, but that drama was blowing up all over twitter and I was thinking, "Hey, what can it hurt?"

My brain, is the answer I forgot to supply.
