The movie Stranger Than Fiction is the fucking BOMB. Seriously, I cannot express how much I love this film. The writing makes me want to curl into a little happy ball, and the actors are all So Awesome I Just Can't Stand It.
Part of me wants to find Zach Helm, the screenwriter, and give him...something. Hug, kiss, flowers, cookies, pirated copy of my favourite CD, a pair of panties, SOMETHING. Cause he rocks the body the rocks the party. As does Will Farrell. And Maggie Gyllenhaal. And Emma Thompson. And...and...
Have you watched it? GO WATCH IT.

I commissioned some icons at papersquares, the icon journal of the lovely cherrystonelane. She just posted the fruits of her labour and they're absolutely GORGEOUS!!! *glee*
If you go over, look around at the other lovelies she has to offer, and friend the journal if you'd like. Not only does she totally deserve the recognition for her mad iconmaking skillz, but she's also one of the sweetest people I've met on LJ and needs more love. :D

Some friends of ours threw a party last night at their home and asked everyone invited to bring a dish, so I made this chicken alfredo thing that we all like. These friends moved here from Atlanta, where the husband had been a soux chef - one of the best meals I've ever eaten in my life was prepared by him.
Had to squee a lot, then, when he asked me today for the recipe. :D

Name: Katie Date: Monday, August 20, 2007 Teacher: Ms. Jordan Subject: Doctor Who, Season 1
Doctor Who is a long-running award-winning British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The series depicts the adventures of a mysterious time-traveller known as "the Doctor" who travels in his TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space) time ship, which appears from the exterior to be a blue police callbox. With his companions, he explores time and space, solving problems and righting wrongs.
The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television series in the world[1] and is also a significant part of-
Wait...what do you mean, it's plagiarism to take it right off of Wiki? The hell? Does...does this mean I fail? Wait, no, I need this grade! *cries*
;)
Sorry, Jo, I know this took considerably longer to post than just making tea. Come to think of it, I STILL haven't had any. Damn.
So...report. I admit it, it was full of awesome - totally not what I was expecting either, considering that the last time I watched the show on a regular basis, Tom Baker was the Doctor (yey for feeling old! *headdesk*). Eccles kicked ass, and I think I now understand the rabid tendencies of the Nine/Rose shippers, despite having only watched three eps so far.
And zombies, Jo. Freaking ZOMBIES. You know my opinion on that subject. Couldn't you have given me a wee bit of a heads up? *shudders*
So you and Chris and E were right - I should have listened earlier. Feel free to bombard me with I-told-you-so's. And given that Nick likes it too, we're going to be tearing through the remaining DVDs as fast as Netflix can send them (yes, we could watch them online, but it's tiny-laptop-screen vs. much-bigger-TV-screen, so not really a contest there).
If I bribe you with cookies, will I get a higher grade?

Yep, less than three weeks before I may very well be letting my paid LJ account expire (no, I haven't decided yet, I am indecision incarnate when it comes to choices like this, sadly), I decide to go and upload a mood theme.
(Side note: I did it with NO OUTSIDE HELP WHATSOEVER. *computer noob self is inordinately proud about that*)
Granted, I know we can have mood themes with plus accounts, but I have no idea what's going to be the immediate effect of non-renewal. I know certain things are wiped right away (icons, some bits of Scrapbook, journal customizations that aren't supported by plus accounts) but other than that, no idea. It requires research. I hope to God this journal layout doesn't get wiped (definitely need to look into that, it would be a serious crime for all of bratty_jedi's hard work to go to waste) or there will follow much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Ah well. In too much pain to worry about it much just now. Forefront in my mind is getting up and filling the hot water bottle again. Or rather, not wanting to get up, but knowing that I'll hate myself in fifteen minutes if I don't.
See? Indecision. It's a curse.
Enjoy the mood theme, any of you who, like me, agree that shoebox_project is complete and utter love.

It leads to memes like this one.
Nicked from isis_uf: 1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 123. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions. 5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1). 6. Tag five people: Consider yourself tagged if you'd like to be.
A week later when Sebastian came up for trial he was fined ten pounds. The newspapers reported it with painful prominence, one of them under the ironic headline: "Marquis's Son Unused to Wine." The magistrate said that it was only through the prompt action of the police that he was not up on a grave charge... "It is purely by good fortune that you do not bear the responsibility of a serious accident..." Mr. Samgrass gave evidence that Sebastian bore an irreproachable character and that a brilliant future at the University was in jeopardy. The papers took hold of this too - "Model Student's Career at Stake." But for Mr. Samgrass's evidence, said the magistrate, he would have been disposed to give an exemplary sentence; the law was the same for an Oxford undergraduate as for any young hooligan, indeed the better the home the more shameful the offence...
By a lovely coincidence, this is exactly one full paragraph from Brideshead Revisited, which is gorgeous so far. Two details of particular interest for me in this excerpt: the use of (s's), which is something I've argued about with friends, preferring myself to use (s'); and the comforting fact that Evelyn Waugh used ellipsis marks even more than I do.

You know, I had other things I wanted to post about, probably far more important things, but...well, you're not getting those. Nope, you're going to be subjected to a small display of complete fangirly geekishness (ooo, spellcheck gives a solid NO as to this being an actual word - yey for helping to broaden the language), because today, boys and girls, we're talking about the wonderful world of webcomics.
I was organizing my comic bookmarks this morning by when they're updated (*points to self* geek, remember?) and realized that The List is getting long again. I purged a bunch of them from The List last year - think I was up to about 35 or 40 - because it was taking me too damned long to read through them all every day. Current number of regularly read comics is a mere 19, with maybe ten or so others thrown in whose writers like to tease their readers by updating entirely according to whim (can't complain about that too much, given that my updating schedule is just as screwed up *coff*), or have stopped updating *sob*, and then one GORGEOUS comic that's updated just two or three times a year, because the writer and illustrator put out an entire chapter all at once.
Used to be that I read mostly syndicated stuff; not so much now, though. Not that there aren't some fantastic syndicated comics out there, but for the most part I've gotten more into indie. The internet is chock full o'good webcomics these days, waaaaay too many to read. I know I'm missing some great material, but isn't that the way of pretty much everything? I get the same feeling whenever I walk into a bookstore. The ones I DO read, though, are full of yay. Either great storylines, or humour, or art (and occasionally all three, which are the ones I obsessively check the moment they're supposed to be uploaded), and I love all of them to the point of being unreasonably upset when I can't get online, or when the writers/artists miss an update (or get sick, or go on vacation, or have family emergencies - damn them for having lives :P).
I luuuuv getting recs (Nick and kileaiya being my main crack dealers in that regard - oh, and Jo? I TORE through the No Pink Ponies archives last night - SO WIN), so if any of you have some luv to share, step right up. We must educate those who sadly know nothing of the bliss that is webcomix.
Okay, yeah, I'm not really fooling anyone, I just need my fix.
(Stay tuned for our next geek topic: Wizard Rock!)
ADDENDUM: And holy crap, I just found out that Mike Wieringo died yesterday. He was an amazing artist, worked for Marvel, DC and Image comics. Lord, only 44 too. :( My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I said I'd post some links for those who are interested/want to learn more/like getting angry and depressed about the LJ Boldthrough debacle.
Most of the general stuff has been well talked-about already - two artists banned for posting what LJ has dubbed child pornography, and the subsequent explosion of not only the fandom but also those concerned with the way the situation was handled, and is continuing to be handled, by LJ/Six Apart. I wish I could say that I was keeping up with all the comments on lj_biz, but I can't, it's impossible for me to devote that much time to reading it all. Needless to say, though, if you have the time (and the computer capacity to handle the load of comments), then skimming through isn't a bad idea ('ware the cat macros).
Still here are some links you may not have seen yet that give a good overview, or raise some interesting questions. isis_uf wrote a thought-provoking (and amusing) post addressing the PR aspect of all of this. Linkie for that is here at her journal. Another take on that issue is here at copperbadge's journal.
Here's an editorial/summation on slashdot.org that supports the fandom view; playing devil's advocate, here are two links arguing the other side, this post from synedochic, and this open letter by mskala (total side note, but I found it interesting that this is his last entry before basically leaving LJ last year).
And more than a little disturbing to me are the possible changes LJ is thinking about implementing, which you can read about here at bratty_jedi's journal. Still looking for more about that.
There's MAAAASSIVE amounts of info out there - I'm sure this barely touches the tip of the iceberg, so poke around if this doesn't cover what you wanted to know. I don't plan on posting about this again, not unless LJ does something so phenomenally appalling that abandoning ship becomes necessary. Which hopefully won't happen - as with many others, I like it here and don't feel like pulling up my roots if I don't have to.
One immediate question I'm facing, though, is whether or not to renew my paid account, which is up Sept. 2. *sigh* Thoughts on that?
Addendum: Of course, if you have a paid account with lots of time left on it, there's always this approach. >:)

Right, so I know this topic has been/is being discussed ad nauseum all over the place, but having been gone for the bulk of it, I'm feeling overwhelmed from the sheer mountain o'wank that is LJ right now. It certainly seems that much of fandom is poised for a mass exodus, but maybe I'm reading that incorrectly. Anyone keeping their finger on the pulse point of all of this?

I've got my lemonade and vodka (points to andacus for the drink suggestion) and am now recovering from both heat and the ordeal of four children, one cart, and a grocery store trip while all of us were hungry (I don't ever advise trying this - unless you're a masochist, at which point I can HIGHLY recommend it).
We're out of town, starting tomorrow night through a week Sunday, off to the Virginia 'burbs again. Bookend parties, this Saturday and next, are the main draw, with blissfully little to do in between. I'm going to try and hit the tea shop in Alexandria *bounces* and a cool consignment store my sister-in-law has been telling me about. Various relatives have already asked us to hand over the children (*snort* like I'd say no that that), so Nick and I might have actual free time. Like, we could go OUT. And DO STUFF. TOGETHER. WITH NO CHILDREN.
What a bizarre concept.

Erm...yeah, my profile says pretty much nothing about me. Fine for me, sucks for you if you're curious. Especially sucks since I'm soooooooo not in a space right now where I can write an interesting-sounding bio. And pride dictates that I not write a boring one. So if you were hoping to learn more re:Katie, you're screwed for now.
Feel free to tell me strange and wonderful things about yourselves, though, should you feel bored/crazy/compulsive enough to comment. And yes, that applies to whomever wants to, even you old, boring friends (who, btw, I now plan on selling off to the highest bidder - anyone caught whining about this new change in policy will be summarily beaten with copies of book seven).
Try to keep any and all details clean, folks - you wouldn't want to destroy my innocence now, would you?
...
Yeah, some of you didn't even TRY not to laugh at that one. *pouts* See, that's the sort of thing that makes me want to sell you off.
