A Public Service Announcement [Sep. 2nd, 2003|11:30 am]

I would like to state, for the record, that I personally, ignoring the rest of whatever hiveminds I belong to and striking out on a bold new independent level, do not care if Elijah Wood and/or Dominic Monaghan and/or Billy Boyd and/or Sean Astin and/or God is gay. This is not taking "not care" as being against the idea, it is saying that, in the long run, this has no effect on my life, and the sun will continue to rise regardless of anyone's sexual habits. The only thing that will stop the sun rising is if Orfeo stops playing his guitar. Moving on. What bothers me is not the concept that Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood might be a couple--if they are, more power to them and all the best luck in the future. I will continue seeing The Lord of the Rings movies because I LIKE THEM, which is why I do everything that I have a choice about. I do not think any of the cast will fuck me, regardless of their sexual orientation, because the chances of us ever meeting, even at some sort of signing, are low, because I live in the middle of nowhere. I don't even really want to fuck them. I'm good. The only problem I have with the concept that Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood or ANY OTHER CELEBRITIES are dating is when it is presented as FACT by those who do not actually have anything they're willing to use to back it up other than inconclusive photographic evidence. To put this into perspective: there are pictures of Bigfoot. Bigfoot might exist, but most authorities do not take these pictures as proof. Again, for perspective, THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF BIGFOOT ARE MORE COMPELLING, because they show something that is what we think of as Bigfoot. On the other hand, the pictures of Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood show two people doing things that everyone does with their friends, and yes, I include straight males with their straight friends, because I have straight friends who hug each other and look at each other when they're talking to each other. If one were a girl, would I be convinced they were dating? No. The news might speculate about them, yes, because the news doesn't speculate about two men together very much--I'm not denying that. But ANY campaign based on, from what I can tell, dubious sources that offer nothing definative for their cause, would be one that I would doubt. Possibilities exist, but I am a dubious person by nature, and it takes more than this to convince me. If this is homophobia, then I am confused.

than inconclusive photographic evidence
How about carefully cropped photo evidence [ie. the infamous handholding pic which originally showed the boys with female dates; see www.garbage-girl.net/archives/00000010.htm or www.garbage-girl.net/archives/archive-022003.htm]?

Wow, that one I never ever heard about. I guess if real evidence doesn't cut it, you go to fake!

Re:

I posted at least one of these links about two months ago, right after I joined dl_anon. If you read the accounts of those girls, and go to sanityplease for a link to another view, you'll find that the pictures originally included the girls the guys brought as dates. Unfortunately, every trace of the original pictures (sue to the annoyance mentioned on the archived links) seems to have disappeared and MsA only has links to a cropped version. However, a red haired girl is visible in the upper left [identified by someone as Dom's date]. She looks an awful lot like the red-haired girl in some tabloid photos of Dom & Elijah making asses of themselves at LAX.
