I like Junta.

A lot.

Despite attempts to keep a stoic expression, he has a tendency to giggle uncontrollably at the most inappropriate things. SO CUTE.

It kind of bothers me when someone says they want to be a bnf of a certain fandom.
Ok, so not really "kind of". It REALLY bothers me when someone says they want tbe a bnf of a certain fandom.

I do realize the person was probably joking, but but. But.

Yeah, it's none of my business because I'm not even part of the fandom since I've never done anything for it, but I DO like this fandom and the fics and the art and I don't want to see it devolve into something filled with dramu.

I AM aware that it doesn't have to be like that. BNFs themselves aren't the ones who cause dramu in fandoms, but geeagh. Can't we all just be the happy family we are now and not want to be all popular and famous in the fandom ;;3;;?

Also, I don't believe people AIM to become BNFs. It just HAPPENS, y'know? Write enough good(!) fics and you'd probably end up being one, without the writer even being aware of it. To WANT to become a BNF seems so... eh.

And even sillier are the people saying "LOL HAY I was a BNF in my older fandoms but I left 'cuz blah blah blah". It just... makes me want to go "LOL SO? WHO CAAARES" at them. WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE. AND WHO CARES. Maybe I'm just being lolsensitive, but gaaaah. It never occurred to me that being a BNF of any fandom is something to be proud of.

It's the first time I'm involved in an actual fandom, and it kinda sucks to see these kinds of things. This is probably why I'm not huge on "lulz fandom friendships" in the first place. I'm not saying that fandom friends are all like this since I did meet a LOT of awesome people within different fandoms, but um. This is still kind of disappointing.

lulz tl;dr.

It's kinda sad to see the term "BNF" degrade into something analogous with drama and wank.

Man! I remember when BNFs used to be a good thing--they were fans who dedicated time to the fandom by helping out at cons, running events, maintaining groups and zines, etc. etc. Now all you gotta do to be a BNF is write some good fics or draw art for the popular coupling and bam or maybe just scream the loudest about how such-and-such character is ZOMGTHEBEST. You get labeled as "BNF."

It's pretty lame; I don't think you're overreacting, honestly. Internet fame is fleeting--one might be "famous" now, but it's the rare case that the fame "lasts." The next wave of fans that come in probably won't have any idea who one is and vote in their own BNF for their generation, so to speak. It's like being a pop star--famous now, but a couple years from now, people will be like "so whatever happened to so and so anyway?" if they even know who you are.

And it's not like one can use "internet fame" to actually benefit IRL. It's the rare case (ie: Cassie Claire) where being internet (in)famous can benefit you big time.

Actually aiming to be a BNF for a fandom is just a sign of a small mind for an attention whore, I'm sorry to say.

In short, IAWTC.
