| ...And get those damn kids off my lawn! |
[Oct. 28th, 2008|12:18 am] |
So lately, I've been lurking around on a couple of "new" forums for some fandoms and other random interests. I do this a lot, actually, to the point where I end up lurking at far more places than I ever actually go ahead and join, for various reasons (one memorable example had to do with a place that was otherwise awesome, but had a very popular and prolific poster who I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to keep myself from going off on, but that's another story.)
One place in particular seems friendly and drama-free enough, but every post turns into a syrupy-sweet, lolcat love-in amongst the same three or four people, complete with INTERNET BAYBEEZ and KITTEHS aplenty. Don't get me wrong, I know damn well I've been there before (most of us were there at some point), and lord knows that I'm not above being silly on the internet (or at least I'd like to think so), but now that I'm a grumpy old woman, there's a threshold for that shit. And we passed it about fifty "OMG I WANT UR FIC BAYBEEZ" ago.
I know it's not a big deal and it's not hurting anyone, but the ultimate reason I made this post was to get that bit of crochety cane-waving out of my system. Hey, if I ever do bother to de-lurk, I wouldn't want my first post to be an explosion of hate, right? |

| Let's give JF some love. |

Okay, so I finally figured out why every gaming site on the internet was suddenly talking up "Sore Thumbs" like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Turns out they were talking about this, the gaming journalism tell-all blog run by former EGM editors, and not that obnoxious and shitty webcomic of the same name.
Needless to say, I feel a lot better now, even if I probably should have figured it out sooner. |

Earthbound Explained, kind of.
It's a long shot as to how true this actually is, but it's safe to say that my mind is blown. |

Persona 3: Fes is coming out in April!
I guess I don't have to be dragged kicking and screaming into "next-gen" yet. Ha!
Well, okay, I never really had to in the first place, but at least things I like are still coming out for systems that I have. |

| Test Patterns aren't just for TV anymore! |
[Oct. 3rd, 2007|10:47 pm] |
I'm basically posting just to see if I can. But while I'm here, I'll go on about some weird stuff I've noticed while surfing around.
- JF logged me out a few days ago, even though I always have it remember me. From what I hear though, not everyone has been able to log back in yet. - fandom_wank's Memories just point to pages that apparently don't exist. Either the mods have lost their collective shit and deleted everything, or they were also casualties of the upgrade. I haven't tried Memories from other journals or communities yet. - Thread Unfolder randomly refuses to work on JF pages, but I know that I've set it up right. I don't know whether this is a JF issue or a Firefox issue, but it always works on LJ... - I just found out that if you fuck up one JF or HTML tag, the entire post gets broken. That never used to happen, did it?
Well, at least we have that "Autosave" option, so I can save the remnants of My Deep Thoughts on two journaling sites. Go progress! |

| True Confessions, of a sort. |
[Jul. 12th, 2007|12:41 am] |
The only thing that I really pay attention to regarding Harry Potter fanfiction is into which House the non-HP characters are sorted in bad crossovers.
Not that any of the characters I've ever seen in crossover fics are ever native-canon-compliant enough to have decent sortings, but that's just part of the dubious charm. |

| I'm expecting her to say something in reference to "dirty pillows." |
[May. 3rd, 2007|03:51 pm] |
In reference to this...
Yeah, it got a teensey bit wanky.
I know I said I wasn't going to start, but almost every one of her posts (with the exception of one) has been exactly like that. "I don't like any of that awful, nasty, perverted stuff that never happened in the game, and you'd have to be a perverted, disgusting, perverted lunatic to write or draw or like it at all!"
And the indignant "WHY ARE YOU BEING MEAN EVERYONE HERE IS A PERVERT SO MEAN?!" response is par for the course as well. I don't know Plutospawn all that well, but since she's one of the few people who have tried to be nice to her without actively ignoring her, the fact that the initial bitchiness was being leveled toward her was uncalled for.
As for myself, I regret nothing. Not that there's much to regret, really.
Come to think of it, she may be insane. |

Well, I just found out what that "Relationship dates" thing in Kingdom Hearts fandom is.
I can't decide whether that's more stupid than the whole "numbers" thing that Gundam Wing fandom does or not, but at least it's something different than that damned name-smashing.
Wait, it's still stupid. At least with name-smashing, you don't need to make a chart to decipher the fandom code. Just lots and lots of alcohol. |

I can't believe I missed this:
How NOT to Introduce Yourself to an LJ Community: Lesson #1
Well, she was doing pretty good up until "EW KEEP THE GROSS SMUT AND NASTY FANON AWAY FROM ME."
Things didn't get wanky, and I'm not going to start, but I'm just going to say my piece and say that CrescentIsle isn't exactly the place to look if you think everything other than "what's blatantly stated in canon" is stupid. In fact, I don't think anyone currently writes the one het, undeniably-shown-in-game pairing at all.
And honestly, if she'd looked at the community before she joined, she'd realize that no one is in danger of getting unlabeled beastiality gang-rape shoved in his or her face for any reason. The mod is pretty good, but he's pretty strict when it comes to stuff like that.
Now, if I were prone to suspicion, I'd suspect that she's not so much having things "shoved in her face" so much as she's being persnickety... |

| As always, serious business. |
[Jan. 4th, 2007|12:02 am] |
Before I start, I completely acknowledge that I have no life and have thought about this way too hard.
So... In Kingdom Hearts fandom, does pairing a Somebody with his or her Nobody count as incest, or masturbation? |

Dear Tales of Symphonia fandom:
HOW MANY YAOI LJ RPGS DOES ONE FANDOM NEED?! SERIOUSLY. |

| Finally, a book without pictures. |
[Jun. 2nd, 2006|12:47 am] |
I did finish reading "Mindscan" the other day, but I don't really know how I feel about it. I think Robert J. Sawyer has gotten a bit of the Michael Crichton Syndrome, with his growing need to make every scene read like it ought to be turned into a movie scene. Especially at the end of the book, which has a plot contriavance that pretty much only exists to be possibly made into a really cool "fight" sequence. He did the same kind of thing with the "Neanderthal Parallax," but here it really stands out against the rest of the story.
Most of the book is also filled to the brim with very un-subtle jabs at the American political and cultural scenes. I mean, I'm not overly fond of the current American government either, but I think that Sawyer just takes it to levels that are over the top. To be fair, part of it did actually turn out to be relevant to the plot, but most of it was just for the sake of establishing that Canada = Liberal, Enlightened Utopia and the U.S.A = Despotistic, Repressive Jesusland.
I did like the overall plot of the book though, especially since Sawyer is good at writing the world as it would realistically react to science fiction events, political, legal, and social red tape and all. That's a quality that I like about most of his books.
And now, time for bed. |

If Sora does that stupid "pouty-face" thing one more time, I swear I am going to put my fist through the TV, throw the TV out the window, then jump up and down on the broken TV until my feet are bloody stumps.
... But other than that, Kingdom Hearts is going well. |

Y HELO THAR, JF.
Megaman Battle Network 6: So Very Tired
The comments on the bottom of the story are the real treasure. They're nowhere near Fandom Wank level excitement, but insane Megaman fans are always a treat to see in their natural habitat.
I too, used to be bitter about there not being a Megaman Legends 3 because of the fact that the Battle Network games took off, but then it was pointed out to me that if it hadn't been for the Battle Network games, Legends would be the series with 6 increasingly-redundant sequels, and then I would probably be greatly annoyed at Capcom anyway. Worse yet, Capcom would have found some way to put that damned fanboy-god Zero into the timeline, and then I would have had to renounce the entire series out of spite.
Besides, the Battle Network games were pretty cool in their own right, until that stupid anime spinoff made the games' timeline it's bitch. Hell, even the anime spinoff was good, clean, goofy fun at first, until they decided that what they really wanted was a Magical Boy series... but that's another thing altogether. Who could forget about Evil Dominatrix Roll.exe?
Megaman Trigger and friends are still showing up as cameos in the Battle Network games (and even in some games that don't have anything to do with the Megaman universe), so if nothing else, they haven't been forgotten. They're just waiting a very, very long time for that rocket to the moon to get made.
Besides, the saturation and over-rating of the Megaman series has been going on ever since Capcom discovered the magic of the almost-sequel. And now they've discovered "collections," God help us all. |

| The Fandom Revue: Tales of Symphonia Edition |
[Jul. 21st, 2005|03:10 am] |
The Harry Potter fandom is going to be jumping for the next few years or so if trends continue, so to cleanse our palates, let's look at the nuttiness of other fandoms.
Some people think that Livejournal is the most rancid pit of Tales of Symphonia fandom. Other people think that it's Fanfiction Net. They would all be wrong, because they'd be forgetting all about Namco's Official Tales Forums.
In which every thread somehow manages to turn into either a Lloyd/Colette vs. Lloyd/Sheena war, or a Kratos/Anna vs. Kratos/Raine war. In which the subject of who took (or didn't take) fictional Raine's fictional virginity is debated over and over again. Was it Kratos? Was it Linar? Was it her father? (Doesn't the fandom already have a pairing for people into that kind of thing?) Was it YOU?! In which nothing bad can ever be said about Kratos, lest you invite the wrath of a billion angry fanboys and fangirls. However, bashing pretty much every other character is perfectly fine.
On the other hand, it's pretty easy to predict which topics one needs to stay away from for the sake of his or her sanity. Some of the gaming section threads are actually pretty informative, and on rare occassion, even funny. It turns out a lot of people other than me got fooled by the scene at Asgard where Raine is lecturing and Colette asks her to repeat. It seems everyone automatically thinks it's an uncontrollable cutscene...
The fanart section has some offerings, but you'd have to wade through a lot of sprite comics and "ToS CAST IN MY MUNDANE LIFE"-type fics to find them. Also, there are way too many people using uncredited Japanese fanart for my level of personal comfort. In other words, it's much the same as any other fanart forum on the internet.
In short: Kratos owns everything, and don't mention sex at all. Maybe it's a lot more like Harry Potter fandom than I would have you believe... |

| Harry Potter and the Fandom Gone Wild. |
[Jul. 17th, 2005|10:53 pm] |
I couldn't resist this time around, so I plunged headlong into the sea of Harry Potter spoilers after about a day of strong, stalwart spoiler virginity.
Well played Rowling, well played. I lost my damned Death Pool because of you, because you wouldn't let Percy be punished for his hubris! Or anyone else I chose, for that matter.
In the meantime, breaking news on CBC.ca includes the fact that Rowling is still richer than you. Rub it in, why don't you? |

Looking at some of the Lunar DS hype reminded me of what Nick said when I told him that the actual subtitle of Lunar DS was "Dragon Song."
"Jesus Christ, they let the fans decide?! Oh, I bet there's going to be a SONG! About DRAGONS! Or the fucking female lead is going to find out that she's really a DRAGON! That SINGS!"
I don't like "Dragon Song" as a subtitle either, but the other choices back when they had the poll weren't much better (Red Desert?!), and I lost about 90% of my interest in it when I found out that it wasn't going to be about the Four Heroes. I need my Ghaleon fix! And my Hell Mel fix!
But still, Game Arts developing it, Toshiyuki Kubooka returning as character designer... I'm starting to get tempted by the damn thing again. |
