| Respect (22 Aug 08) |
[22 Aug 2010|11:28pm] |
Because I am not, in fact, a knee-jerk anything, I would like to provide clarification for my readers and friends regarding a certain reproductive health matter.
I am a great believer in mutual respect.
It is not open season on anyone, pro-choice or pro-life.
This blog and this blogger both stand for freedom. I demand the same freedom for those who would never, ever end a pregnancy as those who feel they must.
That said, I cannot in good conscience defend the new HHS policy. I do not believe the government should have the right to legislate morality in this way. Heartless as I may seem, I must draw the line where the health, mental and physical, of an existing woman comes to matter less than life not yet fully realized. Too many women live where there are not enough doctors to provide a safe alternative when one doctor refuses to perform a legal procedure.
I do not ask that you agree, but I do ask that you respect my beliefs and my right to believe this way, as I will respect yours. In no way did I intend to hurt anyone but the civil servant who decided to write into law what must ultimately be a personal decision -- for both parties.
In order to put my money where my mouth is, I will ask that commenters remember how to discuss this issue in a respectful way. Those who cannot manage it will find themselves unceremoniously banned, regardless of position or argument.

| Happy New Year! |
[01 Jan 2009|12:51pm] |
Congratulations are in order to my dear Allison, who gave birth to her Eleanor on December 27. They are both beautiful. May you have much joy of each other over the years!
Coffee and culture, as promised:
There must be some ritual significance to coffee as a morning beverage. People drink it decaffeinated, which won't really wake them so much as warm them through. They take it black when they need something especially bracing -- but the blacker the coffee, the less caffeine. (Would the bitterness be the bracing part?)
In closing: New Year's Day here at the Castle is glorious. The sun has come out, there is soft jazz on the house speakers, and I have not got a darn thing to fret about. Also, puppy! Sky! Sunshine (the person)! Happy. :-D

| Entirely capable |
[19 Dec 2008|08:23pm] |
Persuaded the nice man at Nelnet to give me a forbearance for a year. This will let me pay off the loan at my own pace. Since it's such a little loan, I can probably knock it out in a year. After that, I'll be able to attack my federal loan, about ten times larger.
I have requested -- shock and awe -- that my mother begin showing me my bills when they come due, not when the creditors start calling. Since I did, in fact, calmly negotiate for that forbearance, I believe she may yet cooperate.

| Birthdays I will surely miss if I don't post now... |
[07 Dec 2008|11:03pm] |
DECEMBER
8 -- little_swirl -- Awww, what's not to love? I will set to work baking tasty Cain-shaped treats (and Jeb, and Glitch...)
9 -- vimeslady -- Great head on your shoulders, and fantastic taste in hot older British men. May that head stay attached for many years to come!
10 -- Naomi -- Tin Man fabulosity! ♥ Looking at the dates, the miniseries must've seemed like an early birthday present, eh?
All three of you, enjoy your days!

...to Erin, who can see this, and Maria, who totally can't.
I drink to two extraordinary women who wrestle with language and win!

File names, roughly in order:

And "outsourced", but that project isn't beating me six ways to Sunday. (No, honey, not a fun-time wish. ;-)

| oh my heck. |
[30 Nov 2008|03:09am] |
Neither Dad nor I can sleep, so we flip on the TV, and Oxygen was the last channel.
Surprise! Sex toys.
No, really. Apparently, at three in the morning, after the happy twisted Mandy Moore movie, they show a half-hour sex toy home shopping infomercial called "Shop Erotic".
Do they think vibrators with cutesy animal faces are the way to liberation or something? Bizarre.

| In my own little corner... |
[27 Nov 2008|06:59pm] |
I see, far more clearly, what my studio flat will look like.
I'll get a table from a secondhand store and cut the legs off, so I have a short Japanese-style table. We'll lacquer the top black. I'll stand my bamboo screen between the dining area and my bed, so I have a bedroom at all. The kitchen will hopefully be on the dining area side of things! :-) I'll prop my telly up on a dresser or something and watch from bed.
Bookshelves everywhere, my darlings.
You'll see, when it becomes reality, what I am going to make for myself. You'll see the home I envision come to life.

| Um, are we ignoring Mumbai today, then...? |
[26 Nov 2008|11:38pm] |
Because I don't know about you, but I'm pretty torn up over the hundred dead and ninethree* hundred injured over there.
You know, like they were when we got hit by terrorists?
To those who have loved ones in danger: Please know that at least one Yank is thinking of you tonight.
* More accurate number. Small blessings, eh?
