Interesting effects

Has anyone else notices that when something FW community in general feels passionately about (as much as any group of individuals like this bunch can agree on a topic) how serious and interesting all of the comments become? This struck me most firmly in the recent BNFshavemorefun kerfluffle about slash and gay/equal marriage, but I know it's happened before. No one's getting wanky, not in the "being an idiot" sense, people are agreeing, disagreeing, and pointing out different things, and the sheer amount of knowledge present in the members of FW Wank amazes me. You still have the outbreaks of silly - that's inevitable and necessary for any serious discussion - but the level of mockery is much, much less, and the level of serious content is much much more.

Now, if only I could harness all of this I could take over the world bring about world peace, or something... FW could start a militia, bonking idiots everywhere over the head with the clue-by-four and bringing about a higher level of consciousness....

It IS interesting, and I've noticed that. Certain topics are almost guarenteed to bring an interesting diversity of comments...

And then you just have the completely RANDOM knowledge spewed out eight comments deep!

Indeed. I was impressed when someone gave a lesson on childbirth over in otf_wank. You just never know.

I dig f_w for just that reason. Fun, snarky, AND informative!

And seriously, sign me up for that militia man.

You know, I think this might just be because there are a helluva lot of intelligent and opinionated people in fandom and IMO a lot of them seem to congregate f_w. And it's not just that, but the range of fandoms they come from appear to be quite broad, so you've not just got a bunch of HP or LOTR fans, but you've got a bit of everything. Which means that you've got an even broader range of experience and opinions.

If that makes sense.

Yes, obviously I don't include myself in the "intelligent" part. ;)

It makes sense and I agree. And I think there's an added element to it - FW is self-critical. Anyone who can't cope with being disagreed with gets laughed out of the community, so whoever actually stays is used to being disagreed with, which implies a high level of cognitive understanding and flexibility, so individual's opinions tend to be better thought out than on average.

Plus we're just t3h k3wl3st.

I agree. All the regulars at F_W have twigged to the fact that if you can't laugh at yourself, you have no business laughing at others. I'll be the first to admit I've been wanktacular on many occasions, and if I did it again, I'd expect y'all to F_W me nine ways from Sunday. And then I would point and laugh. At myself. And possibly at others. And then I'd get sidetracked by a discussion of odd food combinations and forget what the kerfuffle was about in the first place.

It's the Way of the Wank.

I was about to write a long and possibly meaningful comment on how f_w has come a long way as a community from the LJ days when wanking on everyone's part happened more often, but I got tired and saw something shiny to the left of my keyboard. Pretty purple pen...
