When Did I Get So Many DVDs?

I looked over at my DVD shelf just now and found myself asking, “When did I get so many DVDs?” They just seem to accumulate gradually and randomly, depending on what’s on special wherever I am. I added to my collection just today, with the two-disk versions of Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. thanks to the local car-boot sale.

For my own sanity, if not you’re own interest, I’ve made a list of my DVDs. I think I got them all.

Review: Wicked Lovely (Melissa Marr)

Title: Wicked Lovely
Author: Melissa Marr
Genre: Young adult, fantasy
Pages: 331

Rule #3: Don’t stare at invisible faeries. Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don’t speak to invisible faeries. Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don’t ever attract their attention. But it’s too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything. Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations.

AMGMC: Yet Another Music Post

About this time last year Nellie did a short series of posts under the grouping AMGMC: The Anti-Mainstream Gangsta Music Campaign, and being the sheep I am I did two entries on the same theme. Recently it occured to me to give it another go so here we go: Disdainful-Soul.net’s third AMGMC post.

I Like Books

I am in the middle of cleaning my room, or at the very least tidying up my bookshelves.

I am like my parents, in that I like to read, and have a big collection of books. And thanks to Borders and TradeMe that collection is only getting bigger. It only bugs me when the books I want are not available in New Zealand yet, or even worse, books that are out in hardback but are not in the massmarket paperback (which are a) cheaper and b) matching the rest of the series).

As I have mentioned before, I am working on completing a goal of reading 29 books in 2009 and I have added a section to my sidebar that reflects what I am currently reading. My shelves are only going to get more full as time goes on.

I am so proud having bookshelf #1 all tidy and organised for once I wanted to share it with all of you!

Bookshelf #1

So now I need to get into bookcase #2 and make room for even more books that I know will be put on these shelves.

And Catherine Is Addicted To This Song

And Amber Sweet is addicted to the knife
Addicted to the knife? Addicted to the knife.
And addicted to the knife, she needs a little help with the agony.
And a little help comes in a little glass vial in a gun pressed against her anatomy
And when the gun goes off, Miss Sweet is ready for surgery

For those who don’t know, that is a section of the lyrics to Zydrate Anatomy from the movie musical REPO! The Genetic Opera.

And just as the character of Amber Sweet (portrayed by Paris Hilton) is addicted to the painkiller Zydrate and to plastic surgery, I find myself addicted to this song. While there are other songs on the REPO! soundtrack that I also love it’s Zydrate Anatomy (like Legal Assassin and Chase the Morning) that keeps looping around in my head. I even got into a bout of singing it along with someone on Twitter.

I’m sure you’ve all had the problem of songs getting stuck in your head, playing over and over again even when you are trying to think of something else. Is there a specific type of song that does that to you? What’s the last song that did that to you?

Or are you unfortunate enough to have a song stuck in your head right now?

Twilight: The Film of the Book

Those who read this blog or follow me on Twitter should know by now that I am not a fan of Twilight or its sequels, the “vampire” series by Stephenie Meyer. In fact, my disappointment in the series is what (in conjunction with reading seven of the Sookie Stackhouse books in the space of 24 hours) led me to start writing Blood Bound. So I suppose I have Stephenie Meyer to thank, not as an influence of inspiration in the traditional sense, but one in the “get your arse in gear and actually write one of those novels in your head” way.

Most of the problems with the film come from the book itself: dialogue that may have only sounded slightly cheesy on paper sounded ridiculous when spoken aloud, and since they had to keep at least somewhat faithful to the plot that really limited how they could actually give it a plot.

While it was definitely not the greatest movie ever made, and definitely towards the bottom of the list of movies I have seen, I found Twilight: The Film Of The Book to be better than the book itself.

Lost Without My Music

About a week ago, after a bit of troubles that were fixable, my iPod finally called it quits on me. Oh, it turned on and everything, but it refused to play music and videos. I tried ye olde restore, and that seemed to work.

Oh, wait. No it didn’t. All it did was clear the thing of music after telling me that my iPod was corrupted.

This was, in one way, neither better nor worse than what it was beforehand. Either way, I was left with a $400 piece of equipment that played a generic group of iPod quizzes. Yeah.

Took it back to the place my parents got it from (it was my 21st birthday present) and after a few false starts (I brought it back in because it would not work, you’re gonna have to do more than just recharge the thing) it’s finally being checked over properly.

Let’s hope my baby gets fixed, or I get a replacement, because it’s a lonely life without it. My comp is crap so running iTunes while using any other program causes it to go super slow (Yoda forbid you try and run iTunes and Firefox and OpenOffice at once), and most of my music is just mp3 files, so grabbing my old CD player leaves my music collection rather limited.

I want my baby back.
